Hi,
Ive just registered so all is a bit new. Im trying to find information about the following people or any of their relatives:-
My gt grandfather was called Bernard (Barney) Hughes 1836 - 1905. He was born Kilkreevy Otra Madden Co Armagh N. Ireland and married Mary Renaghan 3.9.1872 in Keady chapel Co Armagh. Mary Renaghan (Renihan is the spelling on marriage cert) was from Drumnahavil Derrynoose Co Armagh and her father called Charles was a farmer. Bernard Hughes`s father was also a farmer from Kilkreevy and his first name was Peter.

Welcome to Rootschat.
Looks like the first son might have been called Peter after Bernard's father (in typical Irish tradition):
Peter Hughes, born 20 Aug.1873 Co. Armagh, parents- Bernard Hughes & Mary Runaghan (from IGI at www.familysearch.org)
-
Many thanks for that. I have confirmed that your information is correct and found other siblings as well.
-
Just in case it helps:
Renaghan's in Derrynoose village directory 1888,
Bernard Renaghan, Drumnahavill
Michael Renaghan, Drumnahavill,
Nicholas Renaghan, Listrakelt,
Patrick Renaghan, Crossbane,
Peter Renaghan, Crossbane
there were no Hughes' listed in Killreevy.

Hi orangelil,
Thanks for your help. Ill investigate further to see if any of these people are relatives of my ancestors. norh

Bernard Hughes married Mary Renihan/Renaghan 3rd Sep 1872. Bernards father was called Peter from Kilkreevey Otra Madden and Marys father Charles from Drumnahavil Derrynoose.
(I tried to attach the marriage cert but there was an error)
Also does anyone know the distance between these 2 townlands? Im wondering how they could have met..
Any info about Bernards father Peter or Marys father Charles would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.

The marriage.

While those address are probably the father's home place the cert only says they are where people getting married were living at the time of the marriage.

Can't be too far from each other as they are in the same Civil Parish

You are better off looking for yourself, keeping an eye out for Witnesses on Marriages, Godparents etc...

I have just found some records which are a possibility for Peter Hughes - Father of Bernard in Drumnahvil.
1. Peter hughes death 1869 age 80 Armagh returns quarter 4 volume 16 page 42
2. Death 1869 age 75 quarter 3 volume 11 page 57
3. Death 1870 age 50 quarter 4 volume 16 page 35
These are on civil records Irish genealogy site but they dont show an image so i dont know if this is Peter from Drumnahavil. Peter was dead at the time of his daughters wedding in 1872 so they are possibilities.
Is there another site where i could find this information or would i need to contact PRONI?
Kind regards
Noreen

I have just found some records which are a possibility for Peter Hughes - Father of Bernard in Drumnahvil.

Maybe im not using the site properly?

Deaths have not been updated yet, images start 1878
https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/civil-records/help/what-years-are-covered-by-the-historic-records-of-births-marriages-and-deaths
Have heard that there is only one person working to update the site and only when they have spare time from their usual work so it can take a while to get the work done.

Peter Hughes's death is on-line on the GRONI website. This is a pay-to-view site.

There are some transcripts on FamilySearch but not sure they will give full detail.
I haven't see an informant named and for some odd reason have Relationship to head of household whatever that's all about.

And no luck yet of Family Search Sinann

Hello everyone,
i have returned & Im still trying to find a birth record for Bernard Hughes.
I have the following information:-
Bernard Hughes from Kilkreevy Otra Armagh
married Mary Renihan/Renaghan Keady RC 3rd Sept 1872 aged 24yrs. Calculated birth 1848
1901 Census 17 Kilkreevy Otra Bernard aged 65yrs. Calculated birth 1936
1911 Census 15 Kilkreevy Otra Bernard aged 72 yrs. Calculated birth 1839
1918 Death record (Tynan Civil Death reg 1864-1921) aged 90 therefore calculated birth 1828
1918 Death record could possibly be saying age 70? therefore calculated birth 1848
Can anyone help find a birth record?
Many thanks in advance.

Can anyone help find a birth record?
Civil registration of births, Catholic marriages & deaths started in Ireland in 1864 (from 1845 for Protestant & Registrar’s Office marriages). So, before those dates, church records (if they exist) will need to be found.
Since they were Catholic there are lots of parish registers here (free)- https://registers.nli.ie/ Coverage varies but will give you a place to search for his baptism record.
