Title: Annie Maria STANDEN (nee SCOTT)
Post by: moghouse on Wednesday 10 September 08 17:33 BST (UK)
My cousin, knowing that I was doing some research into the family history, Has got in touch with the oldest surviving member of the family. Although he is quite old and his memory may not be perfect he has told us that some of the information we were given may not be accurate. So could someone please do a quick look-up for me to sort the following query?

Annie Maria STANDEN (nee SCOTT) was born in Bassingbourn in 1867, she married Harry Standen and had 13 children and died in Bassingbourn, but did she die in 1912 or 1947, or indeed in some other year?

FreeBMD isnt finding her in the Royston District for the earlier year - it peters out in the 1920s, so I'm afraid its a slog thru the Q'ly Indexes ....

FreeBMD has the birth of a MArgaret Standen (mothers maiden name Scott) in Jan/Feb/MAr 1913, Royston reg distr

So death in 1912 doesnt look so likely.... ;)

(I expect you have got the marriage - if not Ap/May/Jun 1887 Annie Scott  Harry Standen ref 3a 547)

Just looked through full index for 1947 - no Annie Standen (or similar)

So it looks like your third option "indeed some other year" is the most likely!!

You may be able to narow down her date of death if she appears on any other documents e.g a witness at one of her children's marriage.

There are a couple of marriages on FreeBMD (Frank and Fred I think)
sadly Rupert (baby on 1901) dies in 1903.

I assume you have 1901 census (8 children by then) RG13 1295 43 15

Thank you very much for the information. Interesting that NONE of the family histories got it right!

I think you, or the person who gave you the information, may have misinterpreted dates contained in at least one of the online Standen trees. One tree shows Annie Marie Scott as dying AFTER 1912 http://www.roughwood.net/GenealogyData/f1497.htm#P4501. This should not be equated to dying IN 1912. But the tree is right - she died after 1912 (date presumably deduced from the fact that she had a daughter in the first quarter 1913 and could have died at any time from that date onwards)

The same with Mary Brand on another thread. You said she died IN 1871. The online tree says BEFORE 1871 http://www.roughwood.net/GenealogyData/f1474.htm#P4430 . She actually died in 1864, so the online tree did get it right, although it would have been more accurate to have recorded the date as BETWEEN 1861-1871.

The Mary Brand date is probably taken from the 1871 census where her husband is presumably shown as a widower, but the "after 1912" is not particularly helpful or useful if Annie Marie didn't die until 1945

Strange comment since I thought I had done that!

Re David's remarks, this is a perfect example of how genealogists seeking to be helpful and putting down such information as is available ie died after such a date, can lead to errors. Three other (distant)family members had taken that Roughwood listing to mean 1912. I had not checked it since my very elderly aunt had told me "Your grandmother died when your mother was born" when what she had meant to say was "Your grandmother died on your mother's birthday" (Albeit 33 years later!) She compounded the misunderstanding by saying "Of course I had to look after your mother when she was a baby" Of such are errors made.

Anyway the shrouds of mystery are now swept away and many thanks to all the people who have contributed.
