I am looking for the Newcombe family who resided in Exeter - I do not have an exact address. The head of the household would be John Newcombe and his wife was named Arabella. I know they had a daughter Charlotte born in 1846, but do not know the names of any other children.
Can anyone please help me?

I have had a hard time finding your family in 1851 but I think this may be your family the trouble is the census has been transcribed and there are errors and this could be what happened here so keep an open mind. Charlotte is often mistranscribed as Caroline which has happened in my own famiy tree but if you were able to check the film at your own library or if some one with the 1861 census could follow it up it may become clearer.
I tried looking for Arabella Newcombe and there is nothing for any area I tried different spellings and nothing the same for Charlotte except the 2nd entry I have given you but the parents names are way out any way see what you think
JOHN Z Newcombe Head 41 Cooper b. Exeter St Lawrence
ANN A Newcombe Wife 38 b. Exeter the close
RHODA I " Dau 12 b. St stephens Exeter
JOHN Z " son 8 b. St Stephens, Exeter
CAROLINE I " Day 5 b. St Stephens, Exeter
Living: In Old Castle St, Exeter, St Stephens and St Lawrence
HO/107/ 1869 folio151 page 24 film 0221017
The only Charlotte I found of about the right age is this one
William Newcombe 34 Lab b. Sandford
Mary Newcombe 34 b. Bow
William " 8 b. Credition
Thirza " 5 "
Charles " 3 "
Elizabeth " 7mt "
Exeter Rd, Credition, Devonshire
HO/107/1877 folio 124 page 53 film 0221037
If I was you I would chase the first entry and see what comes of it. Give you a classic case of mistranscribing. My G-grandfather is called Sylvanus which is a wonderful name to find on census but not when it has been transcribed as Edward??
Wish you all the best Angela

Thank you very much Angela for your trouble. I will take your advice and chase your first entry as it does sound like it could be the one.
Best wishes,
Alex

Hi Alex Just doing a bit of housekeeping on the Devon Board. Do you still require this 1841 lookup? .........Kris

Hi Kris,
Yes I would still like an 1841 Census Lookup if possible?

Hi Nicky,
Thanks for the Census information - I am however a little doubtful that this is the family I am looking for as the wife being Mary doesn't look right as John's wife was as far as I know named Arabella. I will look into this to see if she had a second name. I am very grateful to you for taking the time to do this lookup.
Regards,
Alex

BTW the 2 Johns in 1861 have a middle initial which may be an F ??? not sure and can't find an example where it's obvious to verify. Jan ;)

Hi Jan,
Thanks for the Census information, the 1861 details certainly look like they could be the ones.
