Title: Robert McPhee
Post by: mcorb on Wednesday 10 September 08 13:47 BST (UK)
Can anyone supply any particulars on the birth or migration of Robert McPhee to Scotland. He was born in Ireland  circa 1828 but I have no idea where. He married Marion Porteous in Paisley around 1851. I believe his parents were John McPhee ( McFee ) and Elizabeth Montgomery

Hi Mcorb

Fraid there won't be any details of his migration to Scotland. Ireland classed as part of the UK so no records of toings and froings were kept - very frustrating.

Finding where in Ireland he was born is going to be very difficult unless you get lucky on a later census and it says which county - genreally it doesn't but just occasionally you get lucky. I do sympathise. I have quite a few where it just says Ireland - not helpful as the way the records are organised in Ireland you really need the county and parish to have any hope of finding them.

One suggestion I will make is to see if any of his siblings also came to Scotland and check their census records. I have found the Irish counties for a couple using that.

Best wishes

Ann

Hi Ann

Thanks for your suggestion. I will do a bit more digging and see if anything positive turns up.

On the first year of civil registration in Scotland (1855), more information was given on the certificates. Birth certificates noted the age and birthplaces of the mother and father.

Robert and Marion had a daughter on that year: Elizabeth Montgomery McFee [sic] in Paisley. You should be able to view the cert. on SP and get some detailed info about Robert and Marion. :) Luckily this also confirms Robert's mother name!

buddy7165 I have details of an Arthur McPhee , son of John McPhee and Elizabeth Montgomery , born in Co Antrim in 1820. He was married to Sophia Love and they had 6 children all girls. He certainly came to Paisley and died there in 1891. Does any of  that tie in with what you have. There is another Arthur McPhee in my tree born in Paisley in 1872 and he was married to Janet Miller.

Robert McPhee was born in 1828 in Belfast, County Antrim, Northern Ireland.  He died 14/11/1896 in Paisley, Renfrewshire Scotland.  Marion was born in 1829 in Paisley, Renfrewshire and died in 1901 in Paisley. It would seem that Robert immigrated prior to his marriage 1850. They had nine children 6 boys and 3 girls.  John McPhee  was born Jan 1 1873 in Belfast and Elizabeth Montgomery was born in 1878 they were married in 1898 in Scone, New South Wales.  They had 2 boys Robert and Arthur.

We seem to have the same names in our trees although some of the data is conflicting. Can you check the dates of birth etc for John McPhee and Elizabeth Montgomery as their offspring Arthur and Robert were born in 1820 and 1828 as far as I can see. Also can you let me know where you got the details of the marriage which seems to have taken place in Australia.Do you have anything before John and Elizabeth. My grandmother was one of the 9 children to Robert Mcphee and Marion Porteous (Elizabeth)
ps I am also a buddy

There were 2.  The one with the wrong date for John McPhee and Elizabeth Montgomery was a tree owned by Matthewboucher1.  The one that appears to be pretty complete was owned by Fiona2306.  The easiest way to find them is to hit family trees and then type either Robert McPhee or Arthur McPhee.  Which one are you related to?  I hope this helps.

Probably, I related to Arthur McPhee.  There is a lot of information in that tree.  It was very helpful.  I am planning to contact Fiona2306 with some information I have once I get it in family tree form

Well worth a check to see if any family members ever applied for Poor Relief.

Where the detailed reports of the Poor Relief Inspector survive they can often give a mini life history, including detailed info on the place of birth, as well as the names of parents, even sometimes names of the families of children and occupations, all of course to establish the extent to which famly members could/should to be able to support the applicant.

These records survive, mostly, for Glasgow.  I believe that there are surviving records for Paisley, but I have no experience of the content.  Greenock's records, I think, were destroyed by enemy action during WWII.

And there are surviving records in many other places in Scotland.

For someone from Ireland, these records can often be the only place where the exact origin, down to the level of the townland, can be found.

There was no shame involved in applying for Poor Relief, - think of it being the equivalent of many State benefits available today.

Title: Re:Johnson McPhee born Northern Ireland circa 1815
Post by: fozzy10 on Saturday 15 June 13 10:00 BST (UK)
I'm at a loss as to how much further I can invetigate my family history on the McPhee side (my mothers).
The furthest I have gotten is Johnson McPhee born 1815 as per below and would really love to get further back.
There is also some vague family rumour that they may have left Ireland and gone to somewhere near Glasgow before going to Hull/Grimsby area.
So far I have
Johnson McPhEE born c1815 Northern Ireland  - married to unknown.
They had:
John McPhEE born1843 Ireland died 25/4/1901 married 19/4/1863 to Fanny Smith Broxham born 20/10 /1849 Sculcoates (Hull)
Can anyone help or point me in the right direction for Irish records please?
