Does anyone have information on James McCormick born in Ireland circa 1917. He married Janet McDougall at Falkirk in 1843.He worked as a spirit dealer in Edinburgh and had at least 3 children James 1844 , Duncan 1848 and Ann 1847. The 1851 census shows the family living at ? Newbrey Friars. He does not appear on the 1861 census and by that time his wife has remarried William Duncan and was living at Cowgate

Hi There,
Would that be 'New Greyfriars', Edinburgh?

Hi Lynda
Yes. I'm sure it is Greyfriars. The copy on the census form was almost unreadable.

Hello mcorb,
Unfortunately it does not look like you will be able to get a death certificate for James. Janet married to William Duncan on the 7th of November 1852. Her father's name was Alexander.
I have noticed most spirit dealers leave wills and luckily, it's the same with James. His is dated 22/03/1853 and is available to view on SP. It might give you some extra info on who he worked for or whether he was self-employed.

Hi Hume 24
Your info was spot on. Thanks. I have now obtained a copy of the testament document which reveals the date of death as 11 October 1851. It also shows James lived at Grassmarket and the business premises were next door and rented to William Duncan. As the marriage was so soon after the death I cant help but wonder if there is anything significant in my g grandfather , born in 1848 , being called Duncan ( McCormack ). All SP documents record James as his father.
Also there was a daughter Ann who died in 1855 and was buried at Greyfriars. Is it possible James is in the same lair.
Regards
