Title: Anglesey, Newborough, N.Wales - Roberts
Post by: JTR2312 on Wednesday 10 September 08 12:53 BST (UK)
Hi,
My great grandfather, Thomas Roberts, was born in Newborough(not yet confirmed) and lived there before leaving for the S.Wales valleys for employment as a miner some time before 1900. I have researched as much as I am able and in the family bible I have a death certificate of Ellen Roberts, died 1905, residing at Tyddyn Bach (translated :- smallholding). I am assuming for the moment that Ellen Roberts is Thomas Roberts mother. 1891 census shows Ellen to be the wife of John Roberts, mariner. Any guidance would be gratefully accepted.
Regards
Jeff

HI Jeff

Who registered that Death for Ellen Roberts that you have the certificate for?

How old was Ellen Roberts in 1905 upon Death?

Unless I have misread you message, do you have a rough year of birth for Thomas Roberts?

Do you know who he married and when his first child was born?

Sorry for so many questions.

Hi Wendy,
Ellen Roberts died aged 74 in 1905. This is registered in the sub district of Llanidam(the 'm' is possibly not an 'm') in the district of Caernarvon.
Thomas Roberts, my great grandfather died in 1919 aged 52 in Stanleytown, Rhondda so that would make his date of birth as 1867. He married a Mary Jane from Blaina, Monmouth and they produced 5 children, two of whom died. One of the survivors was my grandfather. The first born was Beatrice Evelyn on 21st November, 1893. The second, my grandfather, Thomas John, born in 1897. Third, Owen Osmond, b. 1899, died aged 10months. Fourth, Owen Osmond(yes, exactly the same name)b. 1900, fifth, Agnes Ellen b.1906, d. 6 months old.
Hope this helps you.
Regards

HI

So this would then be your man in the 1901 census

21 Middle Terrace Llanwonno, Ystradyfodwg, Glamorgan

Thomas Roberts 40 Occ Coal Miner bn New* Anglessey
Mary Jane Roberts 32 bn as said
Beatrice Roberts 7 bn Blaina
Thomas J Roberts 3 bn Stanley
Osmond O Roberts 1 bn Stanley Glamorgan

I can see a Thomas with parents matching a John and Ellen but I thinkg that Thomas marries an Elizabeth and he was born 1872.

Hi Jeff - it looks as though we're descended from the same Robertses, although my great grandmother Margaret, daughter of John and Ellen, stayed in Anglesey. My cousin and I have the family back one or two more generations, and we have a picture of Margaret and a snap of the grave of the grandmother of John Roberts b1832 - she was C Jones, b1750 who lived to the age of 99. We can't get back further than this because of the Welsh family surnaming convention. Drop me an email to william at bramhill dot net for more.
