Title: Longstock
Post by: russethouse on Monday 08 September 08 22:05 BST (UK)
I have a Henry Elton born in Newton Toney in 1786 0r 1780 - his parents are a Thomas Elton and Sarah nee Grace, the only Thomas Elton and Sarah that fit come from Longstock - they were maried on 25th November 1779 - is their a way to go back further and is there any way of proving I have the right couple.

I haven't been able to locate the Longstock Parish records online

Ok, you've got me there.  Where is Newton Toney?  I can't find it on a map anywhere.  Newton Valence, Newtown, but not this one.

How did you find Sarah's maiden name?

I've checked in Hampshire for any Henry Elton baptisms but can only find one in 1807.

 ???

OK - found it in Wiltshire.

Longstock is not that far away, but you should look in other parishes closer first.

A Thomas Elton was baptised in Longstock 23 Aug 1761, son of William & Elizabeth Elton.  He was born 26 Aug 1752.

He's a possible!  :)

Just to confirm from the IGI

Henry Elton baptised 12-12-1780 Newton Toney - parents Thomas & Sarah

And also on the IGI  -  a submitted entry

marriage of Thomas Elton and Sarah Rice 25 Nov 1779 Longstock.

This may well be the Thomas whose bap. Nell found, but what evidence is there these are Henry's parents?

A Thomas & Mary Elton were baptising children in Longstock around the 1760s.  But there is no sign of a Thomas & Sarah there.

Someone else has transcribed that name as Sarah Grace.  Thomas was not a widower when he married, if that's any help.

I took the advice and looked at nearer Parishes and came up with Thomas Elton in Idminster, Wiltshire again, but no other info.....

Little Nell - If Thomas and Sarah are not in Longstock does that make it more likely that they moved away ?

It could also mean that this couple had no children.  However, the birth of Henry about 12 months after the marriage may indicate that it is the same couple.  Proving it may take some digging!

Hi Russethouse & LittleNeil

I have come across your posts with great interest as I believe we are also descendants of Thomas Elton & Sarah Grace (m1879) and their son Thomas who married Mary Ann.   We had come to the same conclusion that after marrying in Longstock they moved the short distance to Newton Tony.  We had also found the baptism of Thomas and parents William & Elizabeth.  Have you made any progress finding out any more about William & Elizabeth as we are also stuck at this point?

Many thanks Russethouse for the Harriet Smith (nee Elton) - Reading connection.   I'd got her living with her brother in London in 1861 but lost her after that!

I've also been trying to solve this problem for a while as I am a descendant of Thomas Elton.   Yesterday I finally cracked it you will be pleased to hear!

I too believed this Thomas Elton and Sarah Grace married in Longstock in 1779 were the parents of Henry born in 1780 in Newton Toney but why did they move the short distance over the Hampshire-Wiltshire border was a mystery.  Sarah Elton's burial entry in the Newton Toney register dated 16 February 1834 listed her age as 79 which suggests she was born in 1754 or 1755.  This initially pointed at a Sarah Grace who was born in Bristol in 1755, however, I have long wondered if in fact the correct Sarah Grace was one christened in Over Wallop 16 March 1760, which is no more than 6 miles from Longstock?  Could it have been that she was 74 when she died and the Newton Tony church record was incorrect?

Quite by chance sitting with my parents in their front room yesterday, I discovered a transcript had been made of the marriages at Newton Toney from 1591-1812 and was available for free on the UK Genealogy Archives website www.ukga.org   On first review I remarked to my parents crikey there are two Grace girls getting married in Newton Tony in the 17th century.  Further review brought about a major discovery.  Listed on 15 July 1759 was the marriage of Edward Grace (of Over Wallop) to Mary Quaite (both widows).  The light bulb moment was confirmed when reviewing Sarah Grace’s christening record of 1760, her parents are listed as Edward & Mary.   Mary Quaite maiden name was Mary Tinham.  She was christened in Allington on 4 Jun 1727 & had married Edward Quaite on 9 Jun 1752 at St Edmunds Salisbury although her residence was Allington.    Edward Grace was christened in Newton Toney on 29 Jan 1727.  He first married Betty Hayter in 1750 in Winterbourne Earls.  They also had a son John in 1753 baptised in Over Wallop.

Finally I had established the link between Newton Toney & Longstock and a credible explanation as to why Thomas and Sarah moved - family ties.

Well done!  It's great when it all falls into place.

I have amended the link you gave so that it points to the correct place.
