Hello caro and welcome to Rootschat.

Can you give us some details about your great grandfather please?  Name, when married, age and occupation at marriage?  Also the names of the marriage witnesses might be useful.

hi

my gg grandfather was george clayton he was married to emily poole i can't find a marriage cert for them

they where both deceased at the time of my g grandfathers marriage in 1914
his occupation on the marraige cert is given as steelworks furnaceman
my g grandfather Arthur clayton was born about 1887 but was not on the scottish cen in 1901

so he must still have been in england at that time ?

Hello caro

I have drawn a blank on this in the 1891 and 1901 censuses.

I found an Arthur Clayton with mother Emily (a widow) living in Epping in 1891.  Emily remarries to a man named Parish who is dead by the 1901 census.  Emily's maiden name is Jenkins and I think her husband was Arthur. This does not seem to fit with what you know.

I assume you have checked the Scottish censuses for suname variants/mis-spellings?

arthur being the son and emily being the mother is correct

i have since found out through arthur marraige cert

that george was still alive (and retired) in 1914 when arthur married

but emily was deceased

i have also found emily's birth cert and she was born in dalrymple ayrshire in 1867

but still no record of a marriage

Welcome to RootsChat.
Do you think your Clayton family is connected to Caro's great-grandfather's family?
This topic is from 14 years ago.

Having done the research if it's of no use to the original poster it may be of use to someone else.

I would point out that whilst we all work with given documented evidence it can sometimes be incorrect and in the below I believe this to be the case.

I will start at the end and work backwards with dates and links.

21st June 1918. The death of George Clayton of 423, Glasgow Road, Wishaw. Occupation Ironworker. Married to Agnes Williams nee' Gambles. Informant Agnes Robertson--step daughter). George's parents recorded as David Clayton deceased & Elizabeth Clayton ms Rhodes

1911 scottish census

George Clayton 48 Ironworker born England
Agnes Clayton 43 born England
Joseph E H Williams 21 born England (Joseph Ernest Alphonso Williams mq 1890 Cockermouth mmn Gambles)
Arthur Clayton 23 born England
Agnes Williams 18 born England
Albert Clayton 6 born Cambusnethan (Born as George Albert Clayton 9.3.1905, father George Clayton, mother Agnes Clayton, Williams, Gambles. Parents allegedly married 20.10.1903 Workington)

Please weigh up all this info, but after the death of David & Emily in 1902 Cockermouth I believe George Clayton took on looking after Arhtur Clayton(possibly Poole). I cannot answer why if David and Emily were married in 1869 why Arthur's birth is not recorded with mmn Poole but as George was always living with them could he have actually been the father?

John

Added--as per opening post

names being possibly albert- george-arthur-joseph

These names possibly being George Albert Clayton 1905, Arthur Clayton (Poole) 1887 and Joseph Ernest Adolphus Williams

Thank you so much for the information, I have pieced together much of this information but you have filled in a few blanks, going by census records and Arthur’s marriage cert he lists George as his father although Emily is married to David also Arthur’s had sons named Arthur Clayton George Albert Clayton Joseph Ernest alphonso Clayton and my grandfather Philip Clayton there is no David in the children
