I am trying to trace the family of my gt grandfather James Spoor who was possibly born at Sibton somewhere around 1826/28.
His parents are supposedly James Spoor /Spore and mother was called Lucy?
I now suspect that the mothers name was not Lucy but could be a relative.
A recent check on the IGI shows a James Spore born 4 Mar 1828 at Kelsale with parents being James Spore and Mary Ann LILLY.
Looking through the 1861 Census I have located a James Spore 61y and his wife Mary Ann 52y living at Peasenhall with children Samuel 23y born Sibton, Joseph 14y, Robert 13y Harriet 8y - all born Heavingham.
The 1881 Census shows both James & Maryann still living at Peasenhall with James (senior) having been born at Sibton.
Could some kind person please lookup the 1841 - 1871 census for this family. Any assistance in trying to track this family would be very much appreciated.. :)

Greetings Sue & Kris
Many thanks for your replies and it certainly looks like the right family.
I had just made this first posting of mine and went outside to do a spot of weeding and came inside to be very surprised with the quickness of your replies.
It appears that my gt grandfather James Spoor was a bit of a mystery man and on 6 Feb 1851 he joined the 65th Regiment of Foot based at Chatham and I am now trying to track through the 1851 Kent census. No luck so far.
James Spoor came to NZ with the 65th Regiment firstly to Tasmania on 30 May 1853 as a guard on the convict ship "St Vincent" and then to NZ on the "HMS Calliope" which arrived at Wellington 8 July 1853. He served with the 65th Regt. until his discharge at Auckland on 7 Feb 1863.
Nothing is known of his family except the small titbits of 'family lore' passed onto me by my father.
Many thanks for your assistance, this is very much appreciated.
Kindest regards
Bruce

1841 census Film/Folio HO/107/1025/12 Sch. 13, Page 17 - Kelsale
SPOORE
James, aged 43yrs - agricultural labourer
Mary, aged 34yrs
William, aged 10yrs
JAMES, aged 8yrs
Lucy, aged 6yrs
Ann aged 4yrs
Samuel aged 3yrs
Robert, aged 5months
This James doesn't tally with the baptism of 1828 but maybe they that James died and they named another with the same name, as they appeared to have done with Robert.

That is all I can find though there is a Maria Miles 28 b Ubbeston.....Marias born Ubbeston r a lot more common than Lucys born Sibton...LOL.....This Maria is married no kids living in Hinton....There is a Maria Crickmore a servant in Pleasenhall but when I checked she is unwed....Can not c any liklies for the rest of the family
when I check the ref I would assume it to be close by Heveningham 1769 and Pleasenhall 1770 ;)

Come on Bruce Get out the garden!....Only Joshin...LOL.... ;) We need u.......I am a bit concerned Sue as u notice how Bruce starts off with a birth 1826-28 ......Then He finds this family who more or less match except that the mother is not Lucy....Though he is not too concerned by that.....Wondering where Bruce got the born 1826-28 from (Service records-marriage maybe)...Hopefully it is still OK...going into Army age 18 is still OK...Will have to wait to c what Bruce has to say
Cheers Kris :D

Tell you what Kris, you wouldn't be doing any weeding in Suffolk today, been raining too much.

LOL That would make the weeds pull out easily though.....U sure would here in South Oz.....Lovely cool morning after the heat of the past few weeks.....We have had 100F+ over the last three weeks or so (Including terrible bushfires and loss of life sadly)...fortunately cooler days 80s-90s seem to bring relief in between a few real hotties the worst couple 104 followed by 111F would u blieve! Yesterday was a lovely 88 here and this morn 10 am its only 76 so a lovely morn for a spot of gardening if u r in the mood...Cheers Kris :D

Greetings again Sue & Kris
Just came back in from the garden with a number of tasks done for my good lady wife. Weeds shifted, edges trimmed and have also started on the trees. However it's time for lunch and anyway it's too blooming hot out there at the moment. Our 3rd day of summer so far & don't want to talk about the unseasonable non summer to date. Rainy, windy, rainy, cloudy etc. :(
Anyway back to the task at hand and thanks for your wonderful import to date.
All I can say is a really TREE-MENDOUS effort by both of you.
Still haven't had time to digest all of your postings, but have seen enough to see that this could be on the right track at long last.
James Spoor died at Lyttelton (NR Christchurch) in 1915 and the headstone simply says his name and the dates 1826 - 1915 and death certificate just stated Suffolk as being the place of birth.
In a publication giving the names of English soldiers that were discharged here in NZ the notes for his name in the 65th Regt stated his place of birth as being Sefton in Suffolk. Of course no place in Suffolk by this name so hence the struggles of trying to sort out who is from where etc. The only other name given to me by my late father was that the name Alfred was supposed to be a Spoor/Spore family name.
James and his "common law wife" only had 3 children here in NZ - Lucy b 1884 - Sophia b 1887 (my grandmother named after her mother Sophia BROGAN) & Alfred James b 1893
I had best go now and have some lunch before attacking the garden again. Thanks again to everyone - You're a great bunch of people. :) :) :)
