Title: COMPLETED Look up - intention to marry
Post by: DonL on Monday 08 September 08 05:27 BST (UK)
Could some kind soul help my wife track down her grandfather Josa (also known as Jose Marcos) de (or da ) Silva who married Emily Harriet Anderson in New Plymouth at the Gill Strteet Baptist Church on 23rd May 1901. He had a hairdressing/barber business in New Plymouth before he moved down south to Mosgiel. (Marriage reported in Paperspast 25th May 1901)

The intention to marry record may clear up a few issues.

Thanks

Hi DonL,

Intention to Marry Notice. Archives NZ Ref: BDM 20/52 1901 New Plymouth. p. 646/33.
20 May 1901: José da SILVA, bachelor, a hairdresser aged 29 dwelling at New Plymouth, length of residence 6 years, to marry Emily ANDERSON, spinster, Ladies’ Help, aged 25, dwelling at Blenheim, length of residence 1 year, at Baptist Church New Plymouth. Minister: James INGS.

I wondered if the groom might appear as a naturalized citizen and checked the Register of Persons Naturalized in New Zealand before 1948 held at National Library and found this listing:

Joseph Marsilla da SILVA, naturalized 1905, aged 36, born Argentina, a hairdresser living at Mosgiel.

Regards, riley

Hi Riley,

Thanks for that information, especially the naturalization item as there has long been some discussion on whether he came from the Philippines or Argentina which is what most of his children thought.

In a marriage notice dated 25 May 1901 in the Taranaki Herald (from PapersPast)  it says he is the second son of Mingul Vicente da Silva of Manilla, Philippine Islands. However this may mean that the father then lived there and that Jose was born in Argentina. Need a bit more research.

But Carol will be pleased with what you have found. The NZSG Index notes the Naturalization but without the birth place. So thanks for that.
