I am trying to find the parents of William Graham (Born approx 1834 Scone Perthshire).
I have checked the census records and discovered that he married Helen Thomson (Born 1839 Lochee Forfarshire).
I have traced William back to the 1851 census and Helen to the 1861 census but both are living independently from their parents and so no clues there !
I have not found their birth records and so i am now stuck .....
Does anyone have any ideas or information regarding Williams parents?
Thankyou.

Hi Brodie
Welcome to RootsChat :)
The best place for you to start is to view William and Helen's marriage certificate on line at Scotlands People www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.
The cert. will include, amongst other info, their parents' names including mothers' maiden names which will let you hopefully trace their families.
There is only one marriage showing in the period you are looking at:
WILLIAM GRAHAM and HELEN THOMSON Marriage: 25 MAY 1866 Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian
This looks like them in 1871:
William Graham 36, flax porter, b. Scoon
Hellen Graham 32, b. Lochio (spl), Forfarshire
Jessie D Graham 4, b. Dundee
James T Graham 3, b. Dundee
William Graham 1, b. Dundee
Address: Shaws Pend Cowgate, St Andrew Angus
Regards.

5. PHILIP GRAHAM Birth: 17 SEP 1874 Dundee

Thanks very much for your help. I had got the names of most of their children but John Graham was missing from the 1871 & 1881 census. I guess he could have died at a young age?
Also the marriage info is very interesting - i could not find William in the 1861 census - so it is possible that he had by then moved to Edinburgh from Perth?
Thanks again.

Thanks to some very useful previous advice I have now discovered that William Graham's parents were James Graham (Born: 1813 Aughtergaven) and Janet Duff (Born: 1811?).
They were married 1833 in Redgorton, Perth.
I think this is probably as far as i can go back, as i cannot find their birth records (i am a bit of a novice !)

There is this possible birth showing on the Old Parish Registers:
JAMES GRAHAM Christening: 17 JUN 1810 Auchtergaven, Perth
Parents:WILLIAM GRAHAM and JANET GRIGOR
Going by the 1851 census in Redgorton for the family, looks likely that mother Janet Duff may have died between censuses. Last born child showing then is a James age 3. Will be harder to confirm her parents/birth place given that her death would have been before the start of official registration in 1855 (there are also too many possibilities in Perth around that time).
There is also the possibility, looking at the 1861 census, that James Graham may have remarried in 1856 in Redgorton to another Janet (PIRNIE). Again, his marriage cert will confirm his parents' names and show status (bachelor/widower). These early marriage certs didn't always show the name of first spouse for a second marriage but his death cert. may.

Hello Dawn32,
Yes it sounds like we are researching connected trees. I am the granddaughter of Philip's son Alfred. I have names for the other 5 sons and daughters of Philip from information supplied by my Dad. But his memory for spouses and children is not good.
Let me know if you are looking for any specific info and i might have it :-)
I have attached (hopefully) a photo of my Grandfather Alf.
