Hello
I can't help you with an answer, I'm afraid, but can direct you to the Shropshire Archives in Shrewsbury, who will be able to help you. I know they keep copies of old maps and can help identify old addresses. The staff have helped me on a number of occasions.
Have a look at the website for contact details: http://www.shropshire.gov.uk/archives.nsf

hi man thanks to both of you,, i will contact the records office by e-mail to see what they can find. thank you ricky, i had a look on the site you suggested and i have a pretty good idea of where Holy Cross Hospital might have been,,,. its somewhere round the back of the Abbey and i think there are Alms Houses still there, but im not sure. Even though im not far from Shrewsbury our public transport is not good ,also every time i go to Shrewsbury they seem to have knocked something else down and it looks totally different! many many thanks, jean

lso has anyone heard of Owen Shut ,
This website http://shrewsburyforum.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=259 gave reference to the following:
Owens Passage - a dead shut, to the right of what was Deep Pan Pizza (the route it took has been replaced by the Castle Court shut).
Note - on Castle Court, just as the slope begins, on the left is a doorway which leads to a rather grim passage which was once part of the Raven Hotel. This leads eventually, though don't bother - it's not nice, back to Castle Street, next to where Deep Pan Pizza once was. The passage, like a few others (Owen's Passage, Bythell's Passage, Budgett's Passage), were decimated by the huge new commercial developments of the 1980s.
Have a look......there's some good explanations and photos.

hi again,,,, have had a look on the site about the passages in shrewsbury, it certainly brought back memories of running up and down some of these shuts when we were kids !! Gullet Passage was our favourite along with the Seventy Steps.Another alley we used was what we called Fishy Alley, we would get off the bus on smithfield road and then run like hell along the alley to get to the Empire for the saturday matinee,holding our noses as we ran due to the fishmongers along the alley.cant remember if it was an old alley or not, but it was fun to run along it!!!!,,,, have found the census routes on Ancestry and plowdens passage is on there, i need a trip to Shrewsbury to investigate !! jean

Did you ever manage to pin these places down exactly, Jean? I'm also interested in Plowden's Passage, as an uncle of mine was born there in 1926. It would appear -- from this description of the relevant census district in 1901 -- that it was in the block on the north side of Abbey Foregate immediately after the railway bridge and before Railway Lane, i.e. perhaps on the site of the modern-ish buildings where The Severn radio station is now located:
1901 Census : Atcham, St Mary, Enumeration District 18
=================================================================================
Commencing at the Technical School -- Mr Penn's -- left hand side of Abbey Foregate to Captain Collon's, "Abbeydale" including all courts and Passages (
Plowden's Passage, Railway Road, Providence Grove, Portobello, Priddle's Passage, Crown Court, Holy Cross Hospital, Horse Fair, back and front) -- Holywell Street (Holywell Terrace) both sides to Railway Bridge -- Whitehall Street, both sides (including Abbey gardens and Whitehall Terrace) -- return to Abbey Houses and take all houses on left hand up to Holy Cross Institute and left hand side of Monkmoor Street up to Railway Bridge.
