Hi, I am trying to find birth/baptisim records for my grt grt grandfathers Joseph Gillotts family. Joseph, b abt 1830, as per 1851 census, was born in Holmfirth, Yorkshire, His father was Jonas Gillott, spelt as Jellott in IGI, I beleive his mother was Mary, I have found a Jonas marrying a Mary Peace 1813, Kirkburton, the oldest child that I have found so far was Lydia b abt 1824, I am sure there would have been some born before her. We have checked parish records of churches in and immediately around Holmfirth, with no luck.
Jonas & Marys children we have to date are, Lydia b abt 1824, Sarah b abt 1826, John b abt 1828, Joseph b abt 1830, Mary b abt, 1834, Henry b abt 1836, Emma b abt 1839, & Simeon b abt 1840. Most seem to have been born in Thurstonland. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi
As you say there is there is no Joseph Jillott or varients Born/Bapt 1830. in Kirkburton or around parish registers.
Nothing in Almondbury that noth of river holmfirth
He could be in the of 'Overseers of the poor' Birth /bapt records oaround that time at Underbank Holmfirth thus Janas & Mary's missing siblings (Gap 1815/24) could be in that register.
I'll look into that! at Wakefield Archives WYAS soon and get back to you on that but could be a while as weather foul here at the moment! Snow and freezing Ice
This one only

Many thanks for what you have done so far, it confirms some of what I also have found. It appears that Edward Baptised 30 Jul 1731, was a illegitimate child of Sarah, and grandfather of Jonas. Also I have found a Thomas b abt 1820, who may have been a son of Jonas & Mary, but as yet haven't been able to confirm it. I have a copy of Josephs marriage cert, which has Jonas, occupation weaver, listed has father, no mother listed.
Once again, many thanks

Hi Again, you may have this but It may help others in time to come.
What is the main clue here is they were of the of the Wesleyan methodist religion which may point to the unfound yet location of siblings following roll down list after Jonas wedding! hopfuly Joseph abt 1830.
Though It would be great to have! you have the important data that would be found on it to take you back.
It may be a while as I'm looking for others just now! but will keep looking or your on my list of archive look ups.

sub note
You use the word Confirmation! I use epistemology with pre- 1837 with lotts of same common names, limited (no census)info!! but yours is an uncommon name and a one parish register of any religion run down in one list year by year would confirm.

J.Lee. whickleden location ???? on edward 1731 bapt

Hi. I been through all the original 50 pages 1810 - 1850 parish records of Holmfirth , overseers of the poor, all wesleyan and nonconformists chapels round Holmfirth, Newmill, Netherthong, Thursland, Jackson Bridge, Cumberworth, and all covering them years. Also Huddersfield Anglican and Noneconformist, Denbydale. and Skelmanthorpe.
Nothing on any sibling of Jonas.?
All thats left is Highflats and deershaw quakers. quarterly meeting of friends house- Deershaw is Thurstonland. and these records are keeped at the national archives kew London
or they were not baptised!or cottage Bapts common then no records keeped
Emma birth 1838 and Simon or Simeon birth 1840 should have birth certificates.
Best I can do

Hi, Thank you once again for all you have done. On the 1841 census it shows Mary and her children living in Bank Bottom, Glossop, Hadfield, Derbyshire, Jonas was shown as living in Hollingreave, Yorkshire, do you think there could have been a possibility that some of the children could have been born in that area and perhaps baptised there.
from another family member, they have Jonas's father John marrying a Hannah Mellor, as yet I have not been able to find any record of marriage, Hannah was reportedly to have been born in Crossgatehead, Austonley, Holmfirth, with all but one of their children being baptised in the Wesleyan Chapel Holmfirth, with Martha baptised in Queen St Wesleyan, Huddersfield, mind you that is assuming that I have my information right
Once again many thanks
Cheers
Carole

Glossop area would answer a few questions as theres nothing in yorkshire on any Jonas marriage sibblings of Mary.
Try a new post in Derbyshire/Cheshire look ups. you need some one from glossop who knows the area. As I said there is absolutley nothing in any Holmfirth register.
-
Carole,
As they were non conformists they could have been baptised private in there own home as with the troubles of rebellions
after the ludittes. Also with high infant death rates those days it was not uncommon for the parson to do this and maybe the reason to move over the hill to Glossop. Murder, looting, theft was rif then and tough punishment given out. Where Derbyshire was a county of peace and emloyment. Yes your theory does make sence. Also Glossop and Saddleworth were concidered as yorkshire in some parts +/- 15 miles either side of the boundry as it was never really settled after the war of the roses to things got civilized after 1837.
-
From original 1851 c Hadfield Gloss you got Mary Jillott age 56 b 1795 born Shelly Kirkburton
Also Lydica Grancliffe (Jillott) age 27 b 1824 Born Thursland
All sibings Born Thurstland.
Jonas b 1797 Holmfirth 1841 c res Hollingworth Newmill Below Thursland Holmfirth Kirkburton.
Husband James age 24 Born 1827 Hadfield
Dad William age 58 1793
Mother Elizabeth age 49 born 1802
So where the Birth reg entries are is either Private unorthadox Chapel /house.or Deershaw High flatts meeting house.

hi,
dont know if you know the area but crossgatehead, hollingreave and ebson house are all close together, in these days they all come under the new mill area.
all are in walking distance of thurstinland and brockholes.
ebson house is also in newmill, there is still a lovely old house there called ebson house.
have you tried wooldale chapel registers and hepworth.
-
Hi
Nice to hear from you!
Yes and No to your question?. Yes I know the area as villages and Holmfirth and still learning as I did a lot of research up there last summer but I'm from colne vally in Huddersfield but my family come from holmfirth on my mothers side or some do.
No as to detailed insighted knowledge of these satilite abode places on registers or same these villages today.
I've looked through all Holmfirth registers in all church religions except cathorlic seems limited up holmvalley as to records if any.
There are some cottage/house/chapels private non conformist bapts and are in boxes or Achives somewhere or not recorded! some in BMD's non conformist website run by Nat archives brings up London registers for places around england BUT!!
when one reads the numbered pop up page it says within 12 miles of london??? RG5
As the post owner says all census say Thustonland??? bapts.
Yet Jomas b 1797 on 1851 census is at Hollinggreave Newmill and the rest of the family are over around (Joseph b 1830 Tintwistle) glossop.
But! they are lucky as they can skirt around as these bapts as to knowing parents of Joseph and gang from Joe's marriage cert! the prime objective most look for in bapt registers

Hello All
I know this thread is 11-12 years old, but Google returned it as top ranking item in my search.
I have been researching Jillotts, it was my mother's maiden name, adding to work my mother had already completed.
Joseph Lee of (Over) Whickleden was the husband of Susannah, Sarah Jillott's sister. Joseph was born 8 Jan 1699 to John Lee of Whickleden (Kirkburton Parish Records) and married Susannah in 1722 (ditto).
The entry for Edward's birth states he is a "Bastard" and "Father Unknown" in a line that contains so much passive aggression (KPRs). But the curate baptised him nonetheless.
I have been unable to find Over Whickleden on any map but there is a Whickleden Wood south of Scholes and a Whickleden cottage just beyond that and exists today. Also, the mill at Scholes is Lee Mills, and I wonder if the Lee family owned the mill, in which case Joseph could be the son of the mill owner. Susannah probably worked there, as did most of Scholes. She would have been just 20 when they married.
We will never know Edward's father. But Sarah's parents were Edward (b1674) and Esther Jillott neé Bingley (b1673) of Shepley. Edward Sr also has unmarried parents, although this time we know the name of the father - Emanuel Marsland alias Thornton, who later marries, as does Esther. Edward Sr's mother was Esther Jillott, for whom we can find no birth record. However Esther Bingley's parents were John Bingley and Jennett Gillott (b1648), thus returning us to the J/Gillott line from Thurstonland, dating back at least to Henry VIII. Jennett's parents were Henry Gillott (b1606) and Jennet neé Bedforth.
Teasing out the above, it's possible that Edward Jillott and Esther Bingley were cousins and Esther Jillott 's father was also Henry Gillott and Jennett was her sister. Alternatively, she was widowed and was otherwise unrelated. Without records (that would have been English Civil War years) we just don't know.
