Hi
I'm having a real problem finding three marriages in my family I'm assuming they were married in Essex
Sarah Adams b 1847 in Sheering and George Burton b Gt Dunmow in 1846
also her brother
John Adams b 1842 in Sheering Essex I cannot find a marriage connection for him (although I did find a ref for a John Adams on the Lusitania going to New York from Liverpool on 16 October 1909 his age is correct (67) and his occupation is also (carpenter) does anyone know if there is a bmd site for N.Y ? of if theres a way of cross referencing this ?
Also my gt gt grandmothers second marriage I cannot find a ref for this is it possible in the 1850s for a woman to take a mans surname and not be married to him ?
her name was Mary Adams (maiden name Young) and William Ebdy again they lived in Sheering Essex so I'm assuming thats where they were married
thanks ;)

Have you found any of these people on any censuses, either before or after their marriages, to narrow down when mariage might have taken place? And any children of the mariages? (date and place of birth of eldest might help)

Answering my own question now
1881 has them at RG11 1399 102 61
Living in Hertfordshire
with 11 yr old son (and others) who was born Bishops Stortford Herts

Hi
yes Ive found on the 1881 census they had five children the eldest being George Burton aged 11 years born in Bishop Stortford. I have also found in 1871 another George and Sarah Burton both born in Essex they have a 1yr old son George born in the same place as the 1881 George but they have two older children Elizabeth Burton b 1866 in Hertfordshire and Elleanor b 868 also born in Hertfordshire ( but these two girls are not on the 1881 census) ??

1871 gives older children too
Rg10 1355 133 12
Bishops Stortford
Geroge Burton 26 Bussman bn Dunmow
Sarah 25 bn Sheering
Elizabeth 5 bn Bp Stortford
Eleanor 3 bn sawbridgeworth
George 1 bn Bp Stortford

Im assuming that as theyre not on the 1881 census that theyve died while young still looking up death records for them
-
By 1881 they will be 13 and 15 - could be in service somewhere.
I dont think there is any doubt that this is the same family, as the places of birth match so well.
What I do wonder if whether this family is that of Sarah Adams though, as I have found this marriage:
Jan/Feb/Mar 1865
Bishop Strtford 3a 227
George Burton
also on page Sarah Thomas
do you have one of the children's birth certs to confirm she was Adams?

Not had the certificates through yet ordered them monday from Southport so any time now :)
