Title: Holy Trinity, Seghill. Dodds Family
Post by: Kateb on Friday 05 September 08 09:44 BST (UK)
John Dodds who was killed in accident at Mares Close Farm in September 1914 is buried in Holy Trinity churchyard.  His wife, Margaret, is buried with him.  I am unable to trace the death registration for Margaret and am unsure where or when she died.  How can I find out when she died?

kateb,
]do you know who died first - it would help to narrow down the search. is there a stone?
also were they any children who might have registered the death?

do you have 1901 census to give us ages?

do you have death cert for John - think this is it:

john Dodds  sept Q 1914  tynemouth 10b / 353

this gives his age at 66 - born abt 1848 - trying to find them on census

John died first.  The family was scattered after his death as he was a tennant farmer and Margaret and the children had to leave the farm.  The older girls went into service and the eldest son was in the army.  The younger children went into a "children's home" and I wonder whether this was actually a workhouse or whether there was a childrens home somewhere near Seaton Sluice because I think my mother used to take them out on her day off.

Yes I have them on the 1901 census.  Margaret was born in 1865 so she would have been about 49 when John died.

Many thanks for looking.  However, I don't think this is my Margaret.  2 reasons - (a) she wasn't Margaret A and (b) she died "shortly after" John of "a broken heart".  Have you any idea how I could find the burial records for Holy Trinity?

Hi Kateb  :)

(a) she wasn't Margaret A

She might have had a middle name which you don't know about

(b) she died "shortly after" John of "a broken heart".

How do you know this? Is it, perhaps, family folklore?

The record diddy has found is a very good match and probably worth following up. You could contact the Register Office at Morpeth, and ask them to do a reference check before issuing the certificate - i.e. to check that she was the widow of John Dodds.

Thank you for your suggestion.  Neither Margaret's birth certificate nor her marriage certificate show a middle name.  John and Margaret were married at Lanchester Register Office on 8 7 1895.  As children both my brother and I were taken to Holy Trinity Churchyard to visit the grave of our grandparents.  In view of the family being split up, my brother suspects Margaret may have died in the workhouse, or she may have been given shelter by relatives in N. Shields or Sunderland. We were told the younger children went into a children's home.

If, as you say, she died 'shortly' after John, have you discounted this possibility:

Margaret Dodds, aged 51, March quarter 1919, Morpeth 10b 802.

OK I know! - the age is not quite right - but the informant might not have known her correct age.

I think this and the one diddy gave you (notwithstanding the fact that you are sceptical about the extra initial) are worth pursuing with Morpeth Register Office. Consider asking them to do a reference check, and only to issue the certificate if the person concerned is the widow of John Dodds.
