 thanks kerry

For reasons and circumstances that have happened today i would like to add that the contents and photo's on my webite are from family members, the information is from numerous family members and years of searching with help also from family members and numerous geneaology sites including rootschat without them i would never have found the family members who have helped me, the cover of my website is my husbands grandmother emily harrison wife of jack/john harrison.
If your family do appear on the website and you are not happy with it being there please let me know and i will delete it

 thank you all kerry

				Hi Kerry,
You might find this thread interesting:
 http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,319181.0.html
Although Greg's ancestor was not from Staffs he moved many Tipton/Bilston/Staffs people up from there to Derbyshire (including mine ;)).
Hope you get some more responses - good luck.

				Hi Ann,
Welcome to rootschat - I hope you find it interesting, and helpful. :)
I'm curious to know what your ancestors (and Kerry's) went on to do later - I know the Bonser family, on the Erewash Canal at Ilkeston, moved on to doing pleasure trips in the 1920s. (see thread on post).
 Paulene :)
I recently visited St.John's Chruch, Kate's Hill, Dudley, to find the grave of my ancestor - William Perry, also known as the Tipton Slasher, is buried there.

				Hi Kerry

I have a John Fradley b:1858 don't know who he married but I have come across the Harison Family in previous searches.

My husbands tree has the boatmen in it.

Elizabeth Moore married Joshua Fradley after the death of his brother Samuel Fradley and had four children.

				Hi All

 Interesting Reports found on Boatmen

Birmingham Daily Post Sat March 19th 1881
 Obstructing the Birmingham Canal
At Walsall Guildhall, yesterday, John and William Godfrey and William Mountney, Boatmen, Birmingham, were summond, at te instance of the Birmingham Canal Co. for having obstructed the canal. The testimony of several witnesses went to show that on the night of the 1oth inst, the defendents went to the Top Locks, Birchills, with a boat, and owing to a dispute as to who should be incharge of it, John refused to produce the ticket to the Lockkeeper who would not let the boat past till he got it, and the boat stayed in the lock for six hours and detained twenty boats. - John was fined 10s and costs, or 14 days imprisonment, and the other two 20s and costs, or one months imprisonment.

				Hi Ann,

My connection is through the MOORE family and I have the same information as yourself, i.e. Thomas MOORE born abt 1868 married Phoebe WOOD and their daughter Elizabeth, born 1893 married two FRADLEY brothers, Samuel and Joshua.

 Thomas MOORE's parents were
William MOORE born abt 1838 Tipton and Hannah FEREDAY born abt. 1842 Oldbury.  They had the following children
 1. Hannah born abt. 1864 Tipton.
 2. Thomas (as above) born abt, 1868 Tipton.
 3. Joseph born abt. 1871 Wolverhampton
 4. John born abt. 1873 Tipton.
 5. James born abt. 1877 Wolverhampton.
 6. Henry born abt. 1881 Wolverhampton
 7. George born abt. 1883 Wolverhampton

Parents of William, born abt 1838, were Isaac MOORE born abt. 1812 Wolverhampton and Rebecca NICHOLLS also born abt. 1812 Wolverhampton.

Like yourself it's still work in progress, but we do seem to have the same family connections by marriage.

I saw a post from Ann Cooper re Solomon Fradley born abt 1797. I wondered if Ann could very kindly give me any other information about him and his family as Solomon is my great great great grandfather. All I know of him is that in later years on the 1851 and 1861 census he was an Inn Keeper of the Bell and Bear pub in Snow Hill,Shelton,Stoke-on-Trent. Solomon had a son, Solomon, who had a son, Wilbraham, who had a son Alfred ,this was my grandfather.

Any information regarding this family, however small, would really be appreciated.

 Many thanks, Linda Rhead

				Hi,Kerry,

Had  a look at your Boatmen website today..I loved it.....:)

It was great to see my ancestors listed up there. Mine are the Fradleys.Benjamin Fradley born 1796 was the brother of my three times great grandfather Solomon, who was also a Boatman until he became an Inn-Keeper in or around 1851. Do you know if any of the photos on the website have any of the Fradley family on them?

-
				Hi all -

My boatmen were named Johnson, working on the Mersey-Trent Canal between Runcorn, Stoke-on-Trent and Wolverhampton throughout the 19th century.  Some of the family were born at Barnton and others at Sandbach.  I'm descended from Peter Johnson, born c.1810 at Barnton, the son of Michael Frederick Johnson.  His brothers, both boatmen, were George (born 1806 Liverpool)  and John (born 1807 Liverpool).

Peter's children included William (born 1853 Wolverhampton) who became boatman of the 'Barlaston' and married Jane, daughter of Edward Wordsby, also a boatman.

Thanks for that information, Ann - much appreciated.  I think Joseph was one one of 'my' Johnson brothers, but he's a bit of a shadowy individual and I haven't found out much about him.  The William Johnson in my family got married in the 1880s, so can't be the one buried at Middlewich.  I'll put him on file, though.

 Thanks again -

				Hi Everyone,

My direct line is Moore, who were boatmen.  My Gt. Grandfather, George Moore, born 1851 at Spon Lane, West Bromwich, lived mainly in Tipton, although he is shown on the 1901 census as living in B'ham, working for Fellows, Moreton & Co.  I've no information regarding names of boats he worked on, or what happened to him after 1901.  No trace to date on the 1911 census.

The following may be of interest to anyone with Nixon boatmen in their family.  I've just discovered that Annie Louisa Moore married John Nixon on the 2/4/1893 at St. Gabriels Church, Deritend, B'ham.  John was a boatman, as was his father Wiliam Nixon.  The 1911 census shows that John Nixon, aged 40, was born on a boat at Toll End, West Bromwich.

				Hello Kerry,

One branch of my family (Williams) were boat people and they lived and worked on canal barges with their families from 1860 - 1900.

My earliest info is that of my Gt Grandfather  Enoch & his wife Ann from about 1865 onwards. My Grandad, William Williams was born in 1876 in Wembury, Nantwich.

Records show that their main route was between Trevor, near Llangollen, North Wales, to Wolverhampton and the Midlands, via Nantwich in Cheshire, transporting stone and lime.

I have already posted a request in the Common Room for ' Photo's of Boat People, 1860 - 1900 era'

In addition, I have posted a request on the Cheshire board for info on a Geoge Williams & Sarah Lloyd who were Boat People in Chester, in the hope I may be able to trace relatives.

I 've been guided to your post by another Rootchatter and I really wish I'd seen it earlier because I could probably have put both requests together on your post.

Ah well, hope someone may be able to help.

 Barbara.

My Statham is Joseph his father was William this is all the info i have on them im afraid.

 Sharon

 Hi Sharon,
your post has prompted me to join!  I am also following my tree, my Grandfather and all his ancestors were boatmen from the Midlands.  The exciting thing is that his mother was Hannah Statham who married George Henry Smith in 1908.  George Henry Smith's brother Solomon Smith married Hannah's sister Mary Jane Statham in 1911.  The Statham sisters' father was William Statham.

They could be linked with your tree so I would be interested in any information.  I have the certificates but have not managed to find many census returns.

According to family, there is a link somewhere with the Stokes too but I have not yet found where due to a lack of evidence.  Stokes was the maiden name of one of the wives.

The Moore family were known by our family and I have Moores as witnesses at weddings.  eg Elizabeth Moore at Statham + Smith marriage in 1908 and J B Moore at my Grandfathers marriage in 1948.

There is also a link to the village of Barnacle near Coventry, where we have memories.

I look forward to anybody's news from the clues!

Only they are the names I already know!

 Thanks.

I have only just started researching them, Alice is my husband`s maternal G.G/mother.

Wow Anne, you are an absolute star!
What , if any , is your connection?
Do you mind if I use your info. to build my husbands tree?
 Mel
-
				Hi Mel

My connection is through my Mother in Law who is a Leese is connected to Wood and Fradley Family.
Yes you can use the information, I still have more on the Hollinshead family as well as some on those connected via marriage to the Hollinsheads.

 Ann

				Anne,
I can`t believe how much info. you have been able to give me. It`s taken me ages to get where I am with my own tree. The awful thing is, my husband hasn`t been very interested in his own family history, and it`s all there on a plate for him!!!! Typical !  It`s my elder ( teenage ) daughter who is very keen to know, so this will be an excellent surprise when she gets back from holiday.
 Many thanks,
 Mel

				Hi everyone,

I have just found this wonderful site and would like to post my surname interests. They include PRICE, FRADLEY, HAMER, WALTERS , COPE and MEREDITH, and I am very happy to share information.

Unfortunately I have hit a brick wall with my Merediths. I know Richard Meredith , born c1816 married Elizabeth Cope in Dudley in 1839 and have found their children using the Wolverhampton Archives site. However I have not been able to link him with any other Meredith family and would appreciate any ideas.  I know that he died in 1866 and he only appears in1861 census as being from Hopton Bank, Salop.
Children John, Sarah Jane, Francis, Charlotte and Harriet Meredith all married at Acton, near  Nantwich between 1872 and 1883.

 Does anyone recognise this family?

 Many thanks, Jan-P

Hi Kerry, I think your website is great, I found quite a lot of boatmen on three pages of 1841 census in Harbourne, Staffs whilst looking for my Godfrey/Bishops boatmen family. HO 107/980/7 p.30, 31 & 32.
John Bishop (boatman) married Sarah Ann Godfrey in 1843 her parents were William Godfrey (boatman) and Sarah Holbrook. Any info on these families would be useful. I a beginner at this site and not sure how to post this message, I clicked on quote but I don't think thats right, how do I post a message properly?

I am researching the descendants of Betsy HARRISON and Thomas WILLINGTON who married in the Wolverhampton area (probably Tettenhall) in 1854. I have just ordered their marriage cert so, hopefully, will know more soon. Do you have any info on this canal family?

Hi I am new, to this site but have done a lot with my family tree. I have always thought we had a barge/canal link and finding this site is brilliant.
My grandfather was one of the many John Fradleys(1),
 his dad was John Fradley(2)
and his dad was John Fradley,(3)
brother of Edward Fradley who was the father of
John Fradley(4) 1858 from Stone married to Eliza.  Still with me!
Now John Fradley(2) married a Mary ann Burditt from Lubenham, Leicester, the only way we feel they could have met was through canal links as the canal is close to both places. Many of my Fradleys were farmers, John(1) and John(2) were.
My tree is on ancestry.com, if any family member would like to view it please let me know as I need an e mail address to send you an invitation otherwise its a paid subscription site.
Any further information I will be watching for
Look forward to getting to know you all.

				Hi
I have a John Johnson c1820 as a boatman in my family, his father might have been Thomas also a boatman. John had a daughter Sarah (1857ish) but I can't find a baptism for her or find them in the census.

Do you know where I can find any info on boatmen from Staffordshire, did they register in the census if they were on the canal and would they have registered births?

				Hi Anne

I don't know.  As I can't find Sarah with her parents I haven't been able to trace her siblings.

I noticed that the census you found it says "moored at" - does that mean that if they weren't moored they might not have completed the census - although I guess if they were just going up and down a canal they would have to moor overnight.

 Joanna
-
				Hi

If you look at various census records for boatmen, they moored up for the night in some cases they give the name of the boat.
In this case they had moored up on the night of the census.

 Ann
-
How old was Sarah, she may not have been travelling with her family but on another boat. Restrictions on the number of people living on a Boat ie number of cabins.
You could try checking the boat records at the county archives. Stoke (Hanley)archieves have records, Stafford possibly as well.

 Ann
-
				Hi Ann

Sarah was born in 1857ish.  I assume the county archives are not online - I live in the south!  In the 71 census John is living on land although it does say something under Brownhills which I can't read.

 Joanna
-
Afraid not, you have search them yourself.
Stoke archives have a lot of Boat Registers, to go through, when I did my research spent about 5hrs.
You could try contacting them and see if they do searches, they may charge for the service.

 Ann
-
				Joanna

It's possible that the family may have been moored out of the census enumerators reach, I believe this is the reason why
some of my boatmen ancestors can't be found on census. Re 1861, I have quite a few missing from that one.

 Jackie.
-
Well I think that I might wait for retirement and the kids to move out then get myself off and around the country searching!!

Maybe they were moored out of reach and didn't register the childrens birth. I'll keep seaching!

 Thanks
 Joanna

Some of the Johnson family members listed by Ann Cooper in her 10 April post were my forebears.  John and Peter Johnson were brothers, working on the Mersey-Trent canal from the late 1830s onward.  Some of their children were born at Sandbach in Cheshire, others at Stoke-on-Trent, and some at Wolverhampton.  Quite a few of them were baptised - and later married - at St Mary's church, Wolverhampton, which was close to the canal basin.  Another of the Johnson brothers was George, also a boatman, whose youngest son Reuben was landlord of the White Horse Inn at Middlewich.  I have quite a lot of information about 'my' Johnsons, and I would be very happy to share it.

				Hi,

I thought you'd like to know that my connection with boatmen and women is through the Moore family and Elizabeth (Moore) Fradley married Joshua Fradley, March Quarter 1921 Wolstanton District, following the death of Samuel in 1920.
 Regards, Jackie.
-
Hi Jackie, nice to hear from you. Joshua was my ggrandad's brother (Thomas), do you by any chance have a photo of them, my uncle Bill remembers going and visiting Joshua when he lived at Albermarl Road, did you know that Joshua and Thomas both owed boats from the age of 13. Sorry about the mix up about Joshua and Elizabeth not being married I was told this by Joshua's ggrandaughter, she had tried to get their marriage cert and couldn't find a record of it only that of Samuel the other brother and Elizabeth.. but i will pass on to her the info you have given me, and thanks for that....regards Janet

-
				Hi Janet,
The only picture I have of Joshua and Elizabeth is via Ancestry.com. and is attached.  Unfortunately I haven't got any other photos.  I've been trying to find family photos for years.  I hope this helps.

-
				Hi Janet,
Sorry, I don't think the attachment worked, so I'm trying again.
 Regards, Jackie
-
Thanks for the photo, I have a Photo of Thomas and his wife and a photo of the mother to Joshua and Thomas which was Eliza Ann Williams. When I get them scanned I can send them to you if you want...Thanks again regards Janet

-
				Hi Janet,

Thanks, it would be nice to have some photos.  Let me know if the one of Joshua and Elizabeth is too small, because I've found the same one, but a little larger.
 Regards, Jackie
-
Hi Jackie sorry  yes it was too small, are you on ancestry.com? is it easier to send it to my tree? I don't know not very good with the computor, my tree goes under Pass and Doorbar, as soon as I sort those photo's out and I get them scanned I will send you those photo's. Have to take them into work for a work mate to do them for me even though I have a 18year old who is a IT Tech but it's hard enough just getting him out of bed...regards Janet

-
				Hi Janet,
Unfortunately the photo of Joshua and Elizabeth is quite small, but this one is a little better, although if you enlarge it too much it becomes blurred.
 Regards, Jackie.
-
Sorry about this Janet but for some reason it hasn't worked again, I'll have a go at sending it to you via Ancestry.
 Jackie
-
				Hi Janet,
 Third attempt it's worked.
 Jackie
-
Hi Jackie it worked, god help me if it took you three attempts, but hopefully a workmate will scan Thomas tomorrow for me and I can return the favour.
Thank you so much..... Kind regards Janet
-
Hi Jackie, here as promised is a picture of Thomas Fradley, Joshua's brother, the other photo is of Eliza Ann Williams Joshua's and Thomas's mother...hope you get them.. please let me know if you don't

				Hi Kerry, I originally placed a post (Reply 62  &th Feb 09)
just to say that one branch of my family (Williams) were boat people and they lived and worked on canal barges with their families from 1860 - 1900.

My earliest info is that of my Gt Grandfather  Enoch & his wife Ann from about 1865 onwards. My Grandad, William Williams was born in 1876 in Wembury, Nantwich.

I now know that my Gt Uncle George Williams (also a boatman) was working as a Flatman and  living in  Chester with his family.
Daughter Susan married Samuel Busby, daughter Emily married John Taylor.

Anyone recognise names at all? - ' Williams ' line.

 Cheers

 Barbara.

				Hi All
I posted this message this morning on the strays page with no replys so I am trying again here.
I am trying my best to research my family and boatmen play a large part in it My Grandmother born in 1895 in Tipton was the daughter of John Godfrey ( boatman) and I have managed to trace back from there three generations of boatmen. This is where I get stuck. In the 1851 census I have the following:

 Thomas Godfrey     37   boatman
 Sarah                      37
 Maria                       11
 Jane                         5
 Elizabeth                 7
 John                         3
 James Wm               9 Mo
 Living in Ladywood Birmingham
I have been trying to move to the 1871 census to find further information regarding Thomas and Sarah but come to a sudden stop. I looked in the BMD and I found death notes for both of them in 1866. The question is was there an accident about that time or could there be another simple reason. Of course I might be barking up the wrong tree, so any advise would be useful.
I was born and raised in Tipton  and lived opposite Burnt Tree Primary school
in Whitehouse Street where I spent my formative years.

My Great Grandfather Thomas Smith c 1852 was a boatman working from Hardingswood Kidsgrove, He was married to Sarah Archer, whose father Samuel Archer 1822 Leek, lived Hollins and Odd Rode, Cheshire, working as a boatman. Samuel Archer was married to Sarah Jones born Kidderminister, But her parents Thomas Jones and his wife Hannah and Sarah's siblings were all born Staffs. In 1841 The family was in Butt Lane, near Kidsgrove, Thomas Jones was a boatman. Samuel Archer's father was Joseph b1789 and was also a boatman.
Going back to The Smith's Thomas' father Henry b1828'ish Stoke was a boatman but I cannot find him in 1841, although by 1851 he was living near Shelton wharf. His father John on marriage certificate was a woodturner, can't find him in 1841 either?    Any links and will check out the website thanks Nel

 Hi Ann,
I'm new to this site and have not previously been on any other chat line. I have concentrated more on my ancestry( on paper and as yet incomplete) the history is still in my head( I must write it down!) I see that you are related to the Fradley family. Charles the youngest son of Ben and Ann Fradley was my Grandfather. William, my ggg grandfather married Margaret (babtised Peggy, the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Bloor,( bn/bbt 25.6.1762 at Stone) on 1.11.1778 at Stone. He and the Bloors are not natives of Stone. I traced William to Gayton where he was born to Thomas and Elizabeth Fradley on 16.4.1758. Thomas appeared to be an agricultural labourer as they moved around several adjacent parishes , I found no record of any more Marriages in the films of Parish records available to me at LDS family history library. but the I.G.I. has a record of the marriage of Thomas to Elizabeth Pritchard at Stowe by Chartley on 20.7.1755.I double checked the parish record with negative result. I was beginning to think that they were common law marriages and have now only tenuous links through another Thomas and Elizabeth to Nicholas and Jane and an other Nicholas and Jane whose earliest entry in Gayton was a birth in 1646.I do have more detail but it is likely that you have already researched this. If you have or Know of anyone who has I would be interested to hear if you have had more success with the early marriages. The Bloor name crops up again later linked to my grandmothers family.
I hope this is of interest.

Hi Folks, I am new to the chatroom but I am trying to trace back my ancestors who are listed on some old marriage and birth certificates I have inhrited, as boatmen.

George Walker, my great grandfather was married to Mary Ann Pearton who's father George Pearton was also shown as a boatman.  Also my paternal Grandfather William Morris who married George Walkers daughter Caroline was listed on the marriage certificate as a boatman.  The all seem to have been in the Paddington area of London around the 1800's but might have been originally from the Tipton/Dudley area of Worcestershire.

Any further info would be appreciated.

 Thanks

 Joy

				Hi Tony,
I noticed your posting regarding the Fradleys, I dont know if this helps or if you already have this info.
Samuel Bloors wife her maiden name was Dix b 1742 Eccleshall, Staffordshire they married 28/7/1781. William Fradley who married Margaret (Peggy) b 1775 their daughter, they had a son Soloman b 1797. William is also said to have married a Jane B 1758 they had a Martha b 1783, George b 1788 and a Thomas b 1789.
The Benjamin and Ann you mentioned I take this to be Ann Stanworth and their son Charles b 1962 he married a Emma Barnett, well Charles's brother Benjamin Born 1861married a Eliza Ann Williams and they had a Thomas, who was my ggrandad, it's funny to see your posting as if this is right and Charles did marry a Emma, I was at All Saint Church Rode Heath yesterday and saw their grave, I photographed it.. anyway please get in touch  regards Janet

On my tree I have Robert Doughty and quite a few other Doughty,s who owned and worked on canal boats also John Doughty .  his wife Ann Geary made a will  in the 1700s
she states that she is having a trow built at Stodds yard ,which when finished
is to be named {The Three Brothers  }.

				to Janet Smith,

 Hi Janet,
thanks for the info on Elizabeth Bloor (nee Dix). I haven't started her line yet. From the parish records at Stone I traced half of
Elizabeth Hassall's line but lost her father Joshua due possibly to the poor state of the records or the fact that he came from elsewhere. I have leads but have not done anything on it for ages. I had more success with my grandmother Emma Barnet over the last few months. You g grandfather Thomas was my mother's cousin. We lived across the road from him until I was 17. We new him as uncle Tom
I knew your grandma Edith and her husband Frank, as I was growing up with Bill and Jim. Elizabeth I knew but she was younger. I remember Dru very well and her children Jean and John but lost track when they moved to Scholar Green( I think) Likewise Rhoda and her son Michael when they moved to Nuneaton( again I think that's right). I haven't seen any of them for a very long time. Bill was the last and that must be at least 15 years . I hope they are all well. I will keep in touch. kind regards Tony1439
-
Hi Tony sorry it's taken me a bit of time to get back to you, I've only just seen it, we have been camping near to my mums caravan, near Wem. Bill and Joan have also been up and stayed for a few days, Auntie Rhoda died two years ago she was a lovely lady, I keep in touch with Rhoda's daughter Mary, she's trying to do the Garrett side of the family, Thomas's 1st wife was Drucilla Matilda Garrett, I don't know if you remember. I have a feeling Michael died a few years ago.
My nan Edith I don't remember as she died when I was only 1, uncle Jim now lives in Kidsgrove, very near to my mum. Uncle Bill and Auntie Joan still live in Rode Heath, Tony what's your full name (if you dont mind me asking so I can tell Uncle bill. Jean Druc's daughter changed her name by depole to drucilla.
Was I right about Charles and Emma Barnett being buried at All Saints then with their son? if so I have a photo of their grave if you want it, if you havent already got it.
anyway look forward to hearing from you Janet
-
Hi, I'm new to all this so bear with me.

I've been researching my family tree & discovered that my ancestors were boatpeople. The family name is Betts, the furthest I've traced back is my Great Grandfather  - Abraham Betts but I believe his Father & Grandfather were also boat people from the Bilston/Stafford area.
-
				Hi Janet.
yes you were right about my grand parents Charles and Emma Fradley, being buried at Rode church. There are quite a few buried there and also married there. They were mainly Methodists, though I do have a photo of my great grandfather Ben Fradley with Salvation Army cap. He is buried at Middlewich Cemetery  with his wife Ann and elder son Joshua as you probably know. My Grand father was a Trustee of the Primitive Methodist's Chapel in Thurlwood which was closed but reopened for his funeral in 1962.unfortunately I was doing my National Service in the Far East at the time. His older sister Elizabeth Price donated ( if that is the word) the Font ,your uncle Bill will remember it as he used to sing there as a boy and had a good voice as I recall. I think he will remember me being the only one with this Christian name at that time. I can't scan photos at the moment but you can have a copy if you haven't got one. There is a Portrait of him at my cousin's in Alsager but I haven't got one of Ann.I have a few photosof their children Charles, Rebecca, William, Sarah, Elizabeth and Joshua but not Ben, I'm sorry. If you have and can fill in the blanks I would be grateful for copies!
 regards Tony1439
-
Hi Tony phoned uncle Bill and yes he knows who you are Emily your mum right.. Oh and I would love a copy of any photo's you have, I have Thomas my ggrandad and his first wife Drucilla, Joshua and Samuel his brothers and their wife as they married the same woman, also Eliza ann Williams there mum, I also have a photo of Elizabeth and her husband William Price and two of their daughters Elsie and Bertha.. let me know if they are of any use, are you on ancestry? Kind regards Janet

Hi Janet( & anyone else researching the Fradley family)...Linda here...well to say I'm confused is an understatement, so confused in fact that I'm thinking of deleting everyone after Solomon & Benjamin as I'm no longer sure of their parentage, and starting again. Most folk on Ancestry.co.uk have, like us, their parents as William Fradley & Anne Podmore, but on the birth records for both Solomon & Benjamin parents are given as William Fradley & Margaret ( no maiden name given)...they're also given as parents to Hannah Fradley ( b1803 if memory serves without checking my tree) Now the only marriage record I can find for a Wm F and a Margaret is years before Benjamin's and Solomon's birth which is not to say that that isn't possible, but if it's right then we have completely the wrong William as their father.

Anyone with any helpful information please do get in touch.

 Regards,

 Linda

				To Kerry1212
Hi Kerry, what a great website you have created! You have my Fradley side( I will give you one or two additions later) My grandmother's side lists the following so far--Barnet, Grange, Brooks, Brereton, Egerton Doughand Palin( The last five from Middlewich records)
Assuming that you are not already aware of it, I would like draw   your attention ( and everyone else) to a  superb book called A Canal People by Sonia Rolt of the photographs of Robert Longden. Taken in the early 1950s a collection of first class photos of working life  mainly around the Coventry and Oxford canals. The people including children belong to families with following names--Collins, Grantham, Berrill, Carter, Humphries, Humphreys, Skinner, Stokes, Bray, Ward, Wilson, Nixon, Monk, Hone, Taylor, Slater, Newbold, Beechey, Smith, Gibbons, Littlemore, Hanbridge, Lane, Lapworth, Whitlock, Wilson, Tonks, Beauchamp, Griffiths, Peasland, Harrison, McDonald, Anderson, Rogers, Jackson, Tom Rolt, Best, Merchant, Higgins, Boswell, Rice, Hough and others many of which will still be alive. The boats of Samuel Barlow Coal Co Ltd of Birmingham feature but there are others like Fellows Morton and Clayton and British Waterways. I would consider it a must for everyone interested in the history of families on the canals. It depicts what all our familes did. Published 1997, Paperback 1998 by Sutton Publishing Limited, Phoenix Mill, Thrupp, Gloucester, GL5 2BU. Paperback £12.99.  Contains a list of books from 1878 to 1996 about Canals. I got my copy from Borders but I'm sure it could be bought through any bookshop.  I'll be in touch later, Regards Tony1439
P.S. I dont have shares in shops or publishing.

				to Lindarhead.
Hi Linda, I spent a long time on the film of the parish records of Stone which shows that the records were in a poor state when filmed. Apart from some of the scribble( much of it was in a variety of legible scripts)many pages were either bleached out or indecypherable. Working from the most recent to the earliest I recorded the Fradleys as they appeared.Benjamin s/o Ben and Eliz Fradley was born4.11.1838, there were nine other births inccluding Benjamin born 2.1.1818 who had, I believed, died. I found no record of his burial. I have seen in many families the death recorded of one child and later another is given the same name.  Benjamin (who maried Elizabeth) was born the son ofWilliam and Margaret Fradley. I recorded the births of their children as follows-William 10.1.1781 bt 13.1.1781.--Samuel 29.12.1783--Sarah 15.5.1786 bt22.5.1786---Thomas 4.9.1789. bt19.9.1789--John  9.6.1791  bt19.6.1791--Benjamin 8.10.1795 bt13.10.1795--Solomon 26.9.1797 bt 5.11. 1797. I also found a Solomon born 29.1.1800  and no record of death of the first Solomon. If William is working as a boatman the child could have been buried elsewhere, this could also account for the delay between birth and babtism of Benjamin.
I found that William married Margaret Bloor on 1.11.1778. she was christened Peggy on 26.61762 the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Bloor. There were no Margarets recorded. At that time it seemed to be common practice to christen girls with a diminutive form of the name like Polly and Peggy. In the records I noted that there were other Fradleys who were probably cousins and as I said in an earlier note they came from the parishs just north of Stafford. I noted that a William was buried on16.6.1830. Does that help?
 Regards, Tony1439

				To Lindarhead.
Hi Linda, I have just read what I typed late last night and realised that I had made a mistake.
Benjamin s/o Benjaminand Elizabeth Fradley born 2.1.1818 at Stone died and was buried on 28.1.1818. I was working from  rough notes I made at the time and I was tired. Sorry.
 Regards. tony1439

Thanks Tony, that's excellent, absolutely brilliant!!... :)

I shall alter my family tree accordingly.

I sent you a PM with my email address in case there is any other Fradley info we can share.

 Thanks again, Linda.... :D

I've read with great interest the information collected on this site about the Fradley family. My great grandfather was William Fradley, son of Benjamin Fradley and Ann Stanworth. He married Ellen Firkins in 1892 in Congleton ,Cheshire and they went on to have John(my grandfather),Florence, Rebecca, Ellen, Emily, Violet and William.I would be pleased to see any photos anyone has of Benjamin and Ann's children as the ones my family had and there  were many as I can recall from my childhood days were sadly destroyed. My grandfather John worked on the canal boats as a young man and
married my grandmother Harriet Wall whose father was a lockkeeper at Shelton Locks.
 Regards
 Joan
-
Hello Janet, Thank you for the photo of William's sister Elizabeth.I can see the family resemblance to the photos that I remember seeing as a child of the Fradley males. They were probably of William and his brothers, but I do recall that they looked like my grandfather,John. I will try and contact other members of the family to see if they can help and will then be back in touch. Thanks again, Joan.

 Hi Marie,
In my ancestry I have an Eliza Doughty (Bn.c1831) married to a Daniel Barnett ( Bn. c 1823) my ggGrandparents, whose line I am currently working on.The census gives her birthplace as Worcester and her mother as Esther Doughty(Bn.c1798)  of Worcestershire, who was with her in Congleton, Cheshire in 1871. Daniel and his son William are boatmen.I know that the name is quite widespreadbut I wondered if any of your ancestry came from Worcester and if there was any connection. I haven't yet chosen which parish to go for. Perhaps you could direct me! Looking forward to hearing from you.

				Hi Tony,
I haven't been here for a while but I am a direct descendant of Nicholas Fradley 1679  and Jane Holland.1672, are these the two you have.
My lot came from Gayton/Kingston, and were agricultural workers.
I don't know of canal links but often wondered how my great grandfather in staffordshire met my great grandmother in Lubenham, Leicestershire. The canals are near by??
 Val

 quote

Also been in touch with Chester archives and they are going to do a search for any info on the trustee's of the methodist church apparently my grandad was also one.  Anyway Kind regards Janet

Hi to Jackie3, thanks for the reply. I'm unable to send a personal message (not enough posts maybe?) but am very interested in sharing info. Jon.

				Hi everyone - ;D

Fairly recently I discovered that my great-grandfather's eldest sibling, Elizabeth Booth, born Runcorn 1858 married a William Twigg, boatman from Wolverhampton.

For the first few decades of their married life they lived in Runcorn where he worked on the ship canal.  Then between the 1901 and 1911 censuses the family (some of the sons) upped and moved down to Lilleshall.  There they were living on their own barge "Leonard" which on the night of the census was moored at Humber Wharf.

Their sons Richard, George William, Harold and Ernest were all working as boatmen in various capacities, one or two surely with their father.  (Elizabeth and William had several other adult children, but I'm not sure where they were at the time.)

Has anyone a Twigg on their tree?  (I couldn't resist.) ::)

 All the best,
 Anne.

 Thanks

 Joy

Just to say in my family of Boatmen I have a Catherine Morris brn 1859 . She was my dads Grandmother and Married to James Payton Boatman areound the Tipton area. Her Father was Robert Morris who married Jane Longmore from the Kinver area . They lived in the caves just above the Canal and were boat people . Is there a link ? Regards Jean

How lovely to you you all chatting as a family . Another success for this site . I am from the Smith/Payton family and we all found each other last summer and had a meet in September . It was wonderful , the most striking thing I think in boating families is the warm between them .

My ancestor Benjamin Hilton appears to have lived most of his short life in Brettell Lane, Staffordshire. He was a Boat Builder who died in 1838 aged 38. I assume that he built canal boats. He could be the Benjamin Hilton baptised 1801 at Brierley Hill. I do not know this area at all but understand that these two places are very close.  Has anyone else come across the Hilton family? In 1861 Benjamin's daughter Emma married John Marchant, a Boatman, born Kidderminster. In the following censuses he appears as Coal Labourer or Labourer and then he disappears though I have not yet confirmed when he died. On the 1891 census  there is a John Marchant age 61 an inmate in the Kidderminster Workhouse, he was a boatman. I would love to know if anyone has come across these names or has any advice to offer.
 Thanks
 Chirp

Assuming that you are not already aware of it, I would like draw   your attention ( and everyone else) to a  superb book called A Canal People by Sonia Rolt of the photographs of Robert Longden.
Just found there have been lots of posts since I was last here so I am going to fill in some information.
The book above was written by the first wife of my Great Uncle George Smith, son of George Henry Smith.  George Junior is my Grandads brother.

Yes I am related to Jeannette (CatsClaws) so we have found out, and have now met.  Her Gran Sarah was George Henry Smith's sister.

By the way "Youngtug", that film Painted Boats had many extras that were "real life boatpeople".  I have a copy - if you look at the pub scene, you will see my Uncle George with his curly hair - an extra in the film!

Jean - there are a couple of errors in your posts

the photo you posted is not in A Canal People but is in "Narrow Boats at Work" by Michael E Ware.  It says it is on the Grand Union Canal.
They have made a jigsaw from it - but not in its original place - in Lincoln of all places!

The photo you were trying to post with the horse is in fact my Uncle George as a boy with his dad George Henry (who married Hannah Statham).

I will try to post both images.  Please keep me informed of any progress or meetings and when I get a chance I will fill in more!

-
				Hi Sam .
Yus I realized I had the wrong book . I have bought both at home .Thanks for the tip about the film bTW .
I was trying to attach the other photo of Uncle George as a young man with his curly hair :)

Hi, everyone out there with connections to the FRADLEY family.  My husband and I started to research his family tree in September 2009, and up to now have been progressing slowly.

His Grandfather, who he never met, was Charles Fradley, born in Odd Rode in 1891, to John Fradley & Eliza Jane Fradley (formerly Harrison), who married in 1880.

We discovered Roots Chat quite by accident on Sunday, after we got back from our first ever visit to Odd Rode.

We have a Birth Certificate for a John Fradley, born in 1859, to Benjamin Fradley & Ann Fradley (formerly Stanworth), and also some info from the Census in 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 & 1901.  As there seem to be so many Benjamin's & John's, we have been unsure if we are following this info correctly.

We are both really excited by the Posts we have been reading from the following people:

KERRY 1212, ANN COOPER, JANET SMITH, TONY1439, LINDARHEAD,VALIGENE

We have never seen photos of my husband's grandparents, let alone anyone who came before that.

I hope that, with your help, we will be able to find out a lot more.

 Thanks, a lot.

I am interested in the Moore family.  I am looking for EUNICE MOORE born 1850, HillTop, West Bromwich. On her marriage certificate to Joseph Henry Cole (my grandfather) she is down as Eunice Moore, but the only Eunice I can find is called Eunice Hampson, all the details fit, except that name! Can you throw any light on the problem please?
I have her father as Richard Hampson and her mother as Sarah Hawkins. Sarah born 1805 Wednesbury. Where does Moore fit?      ???
 Thanks,
 Mavis

				Hi ANB14

Nice to hear from you and welcome to the site, saw your e-mail your Charles born 1891 was my Great grandfathers cousin, (Thomas Fradley) Thomas's father was Benjamin Fradley born 1861.
Hope you liked Rode Heath or Odd Rode which ever you want to go with, Did you find Clarkes Row where Charles lived? it's hard to find because it's not named.
 Anyway Kind Regards
 Janet
-
				Hi Golfer53

On Ancestry I've found the marriage of Eunice, but she is recorded as Eunice HAMPSON marrying Joseph Henry COLE on the 27 December 1874 at West Bromwich.  Her father is Richard HAMPSON and Joseph's father is Benjamin COLE.

 Regards, Jackie.
-
Thank  you Jackie,  I did have that information, but something is amiss! ::)
 Mavis
-
				Mavis,

The only thing I can think is that as Eunice's surname is shown on the GRO as HAMPSON, could it be that a mistake was made on the marriage certificate.  I have a couple of certificates with name mistakes, although all other information was correct.  Good luck with solving this one.

I have many relatives in my tree who worked on the canals.

On my fathers paternal side, Jesse Moore worked out of Coventry in 1901 and Spon Lane in 1911.

His son James T Moore also worked out of Spon Lane in 1911.  I am quite keen to learn more about him if anyone knows of him.

On my fathers maternal side, Ethel Wood worked for Barlow Boats in Tamworth.

Keen to get in touch with anyone who has links to my relatives.
-
				Hi, Kerry

Thanks for replying to our first post.

We have looked at your website. It's great!

Your info seems to confirm what we have so far. I have been looking at replies 152,153, 154 & 157.  I need to write some of the info down, so that i can see it all at once.

We are trying to collect photos of people, gravestones, canals, and places where they used to live.  We are only looking at the one surname so far. :)

Found the 2 roads where Charles & his wife were living on the day they got married. It is next to Ellesmere Port Boat Museum. We are going to look round the museum asap.

 Thanks Bev

I am having a bit of trouble tracing Jesse's children.  He had a son names James Thomas who in 1911 was working out of Spon Lane.  I've not had much success finding marriage/death record for him.

It also appears Jesse had an adopted names Christie Bevington who in 1911 as aged 4.  I have had no success finding further records for her.

My husband's grandmother was born on a working canal boat her father was Morris from a long line of Welsh miners - a landie - he had married the daughter of (so I have been told) of two well established "boat families" from Shepshed, Liecestershire the Drapers and the Jennings the Morrises then worked the canals in the Midlands, Liecestershire and Northamptonshire another name that pops up is Whale who worked on the Dudley railway and became a boatie x

				Hi all

I'm new to this forum, but got here via a Google search. I'm a direct ancestor of Samuel Barlow - the founder of the Samuel Barlow Coal Co who had quite a big fleet of boats, based in the Midlands.  My Grandma Hannah Barlow was born on a barge on the grand Union Canal and her family were all bargees. Her father John Barlow was a huge man, known as 'Big Jack', although I haven't yet pinned down his details. I have photos though. She talked to me for hours about her life on the boats, and it has always fascinated me. The family was based in Fazeley, Staffs, and my Gran settled in Wilnecote near Tamworth

I'd love any info on the Barlow family, and any pictures too. We have a few old photos of barges and canals from the early 1900s, but can't identify anyone on the barge pictures...

 Hope you can help!

Hi, I've followed this excellent message board since joining Rootschat last year and I wonder if anyone can help please  :)

I know how difficult it is to keep track of boating families on the canals and I have tried posting this on another forum but without success so far but hopefully the "canal specialists" can help.

I'm trying to trace my 3x grt. grandfather Samuel Wise b.1812-1819. He married an Esther Collyer in 1840 in Simpson Buckinghamshire but I can only find him on two censuses.

 1851 HO107 2048 Fol.81 pg1 in Kings Norton Worcs
 1881 RG11 1560 Fol.85 pg 19 in Norton, Northants on boat "Swindle"

On the same page in 1881 is their daughter Margaret and her husband Joseph Hodgins on the boat "Dennis". These are my 2x grt. grandparents.

Can anyone find Samuel Wise on the other censuses? I realize that enumerators often didn't include those on boats so apologies in advance if I send anyone on a wild goose chase searching for something that isn't there ::).

				Hi again

Thanks for the replies. Here is the only photo I have here at the moment, that has both a barge and people on it.

 http://www.t20suzuki.com/cz/barge.jpg

The writing on the barge is hard to decipher, but the bottom word is definitely 'Nuneaton', the top word(s) being 'Johnson' or 'John?Ensor'. These have no link to any of my family tree, but were perhaps friends of the family? Most of the other photos and postcards are of canals or locks with no boats or people on them!

I'm trying to get any info I can on the Barlow Family. My Grandma Hannah Barlow was born on 31st March 1904 on board a Canal Boat near Watford, but the family were from Fazeley/Glascote near Tamworth, Staffs. Her father John Barlow is listed as the Captain and owner, and he lived at 19 John Street, Glascote, Tamworth. He was a huge man (height-wise) and was called 'Big Jack' by everyone. I believe that he was the son, grandson, or nephew of Samuel Barlow founder of the Samuel Barlow Coal Co in 1867. Sam Barlow had a son who worked for him called John Barlow, but I can't find any more details than that.

There is quite a lot about the company on the internet, such as this:

 http://models.bipolar4all.co.uk/samuel_barlow_coal_carrying_co.htm

but none giving much more detail.

 Any help or pointers welcomed.

 Thanks
 Adrian

				Hi All

Just wondering if anyone else has been to the Boat Museum at Ellesmere Port?

We only had a quick look at the weekend, but will be going again soon.  We were very interested to see the 4 restored cottages which were no's 9, 10, 11 & 12 Potters Row.  What caught our attention, however, was the board outside the cottages which said that 6 members of the "HARRISON" family lived at no 8, until it was demolished in 1960.

We are going to see if we can find out the names of these 6 people, to see if they are connected to Eliza Jane Fradley nee Harrison, whose son was living in the next street, on the day he got married, presumably with his parents.

 Thanks for reading

				Thanks guys,

I have only gone as far back as Philip James at the moment so not sure who is siblings/parents were etc. Phillip was born Tewkesbury way and his daughter Clara was born in Tipton. She had a sister called Louisa who married a Joseph Jacques (another boating name). I know this 100% as my Great Aunt who is still alive told me some info last weekend. Shem remembers having an Auntie Lou & an Uncle Jo that were boaters.

I have the census record for Phillip, Ellen and Clara at Stoke Prior on board 'Hadley' & 'Brittania'

Like Jane says it's poss we are all linked in some way.

John, prehaps our James are related down the line. I will carry on digging and digging and digging............................. ::)

 The Canal

Places where family members may have lived or worked.

As we will only be there for the day, on this occasion, can anyone recommend the best places to see in such a short visit?

				Hi again

I asked for some info on the Barlow's earlier and also posted this picture - wondering if anyone recognised the barge:

Since then I've met an expert on the Barlows, who also has contacts to identify boats. He has told me that:

The barge is the HAROLD and it was built in 1911 and registered at Coventry No. 365 on the 13th February 1911 for John Ensor, proprietor of the Midland Quarry Company of Tuttle Hill, Nuneaton. Her master was Thomas Bromage at first, but in later years John Finch then Charles Ward worked her.
Although I can't see a direct link to my family, someone else might find this information useful.

				Hi John

I have Clara's parents as Phillip & Ellen nee Wenlock but as yet I have no parents or siblings for Phillip and no further generations. Don't know if you can fill in the gaps!

Phillip & Ellen had 12 children:

 Louisa c1860
 Clara c1862 (my Great Grandma)
 Eliza c1865
 Alice c1865
 Emily c1867
 Phillip c1870
 John c1871
 Thomas
 Henry c1874
 George c1876
 Ellen c1879
 Arthur J c1880

 Mostly born around Tipton.

Clara married Edward Chater Snr Dec 1884 in West Bromwich and they had 3 children that I know of Edward Jnr, Louisa & Nellie but I think there are more that I'm yet to find.

Edward Jnr married Martha Lucy Brooks (boating family from Braunston) and had 9 children. John Edward was one sone who was my Grandad, he past away last month.

Edward Snr had a brother James who owned and ran canal boats one of which was called 'Hero of Kars'. Edward Snr also worked boats but was a master for George Hale and John Griffiths from Bedworth during the late 1800's early 1900's.  Edward Jnr also worked boats and my 3 surviving Grand Aunts remember life on the cut in the early 1920's.

Edward & Martha left the canal life in the mid 1920's. Most of the family then grew up around Foleshill, Coventry. John  Edward married Prudence Bramwell in Foleshill and they had one daughter, my Mum, called Monica.

Think this may mean we are distant cousins if we can get the connection right!

				Hi Meaney,

The Thomas Jenkinson Holinshead son of Dorothy is from Family Search Vital Records and was extracted from the parish records of Penkridge.  I had a check of the IGI and there is a Thomas Hollinshead christened at Middlewich 09/12/1781 to George and Hannah Hollinshead which was also extracted from the local records is this your Thomas Jenkinson Hollinshead?  I have Hollinshead ancestors who were living at Penkridge in the mid-18th century and suspect Dorothy might be an illegitimate daughter of one of my 5x great-grandfather's sisters, Elizabeth.

Thanks Kerry. There is loads on the 'net about 'The Barlows' but unfortunately there were a lot of different family members doing different things with different 'Barlow' companies!

I have found loads of info since my first visit here and am meeting up with a Barlow family archivist (who i met online) next week! His grandma is my great grandfather's little sister. These siblings had the original Samuel Barlow as their Uncle. Samuel Barlow's brother Thomas was their father, and he ran his own Barges under the Barlow name. My parents even dug up a Photo of two of Thomas Barlow's barges taken pre WW1 - one of which my gran was born on in 1904.

My Great grandfather, John 'Big Jack' Barlow married Mary Ann Humphries around the turn of the century (dates not confirmed yet) and the Humphries were apparently a barge family who worked for the Barlows - so that fits. Mary Ann died on Oct 9th 1925, aged 53. Any info on her family would be great.
-
hi t20racerman, mary ann and john are on the 1901 census mary ann was born in 1872 in oxford and john barlow was born 1877 in bedworth warwickshire they are in chilvers coton in nuneaton warwickshire 1901

 kerry
-
1881 john is with mom hannah barlow b1854 bedworth warwichshire and thomas born 1879 and mary a no age listed, hannah is a boatwoman and says she is married so husband must be on another boat somewhere ;D

 kerry
-
in 1891 hannah barlow (nee skinner) is with husband john b1853 bedworth and children joseph b1875, lucy b1884, elizabeth b1882,

very confusing census has there is a note next to each name saying skinner even john barlow but it also says theresa barlow is john's wife with skinner next to it i think teresa is hannahs sister,

the skinners are a family of boatmen too

That fits exactly with the info I have been given from elsewhere - thank you. Mary Ann was their daughter who was born in 1881. She died quite young in 1908. I have a picture of her as a young woman. Hannah's maiden name was Compton.

This Hannah Barlow is a different one! (It does get confusing!).  Hannah Barlow (nee Compton) married Thomas Barlow (no date yet) and her sister Mary Ann Compton married Thomas Barlow's brother, Samuel Barlow (1847 -1894) - the originator of the Barlow barge company. I haven't come across a Teresa though, or any mention of Skinner.

I have been given a lot of info of who's who in the family that I'm working through, but have not yet looked at any census information to firm it all up. Your help in this is much appreciated. Thanks a lot.  :)

must have been the other one i saw then  ;D i will post that census some time today :)

				Hi Jeanette,
Thanks very much for the information, family tree is starting to become alive.
I am currently living/working in South Africa so I really appreciate any help I can get.
My mother was told her father drowned in a canal when she was 4, approx 1931, would it have been the norm for this to appear in a newspaper?  I've ben unable to find a death certificate for him, my hunch is that he may have merely left not died.
 Thanks again.  Jayne
-
				hi calabash
i dont think that many  cant say that one or more of our relatives drowned in the canal . ocupational hazzard im afraid. i personally have lost over 6 relatives that way, last year i did extensive reserch for a lady more on kerrys line of the harrisons than mine. the things you need to take into account is that a lot of the folk could nither read or write, did not like authorities so tended to steer clear of them as much as poss, the person that drowned was prob not  from the area they drowned in just passing through so local papers tend to not have been very interested & if they where the people had norm moved on esp if they had a load to deliver. i personally would try to find out more about the drowning & search the area for postmortem or police reports
 best wishes

On 5th March 1866, George Cornwall (aka Cornwell), born at Ipstones and a canal boatman on the Cauldon Canal, married Elizabeth Kent, daughter of Thomas Kent, boatman, at St Mark's, Shelton in The Potteries.  Elizabeth was supposedly 20 years old (marriage certificate).  Five years later, in the 1871 Census, Elizabeth was still 20 years old; in 1881 she was 30, in 1891 41 (Census) and 42 (death).  Thus she was born, in Shelton or the adjacent Etruria, c1850 and was no more than 15 or 16 when she married.

While I know lots about the Cornwell family I can find nothing about this Thomas Kent and his daughter.  I've checked out at least two of the Elizabeths born in 1850-51 and neither seems right.   There's an 1861 Census Shelton entry for Thomas Kent, captain, born Cheddleton (near Ipstones) in 1824, with wife Jane 30, Goldenhill, and Elizabeth (7, Etruria).  If accurate, the age of this Elizabeth in 1866 would be 12.

I cannot see any Kents listed in this current line of enquiry, but would like to know if any canal family researchers have encountered this father and daughter?

We look to have the same wider family.  This Jane looks to be the one born in 1862 with mmn being Wood.  I think I've teased out before that the Goldenhill Jane, who married this Thomas Kent might have been a Wood.  It all suggests that the age (7) of Elizabeth in the 1861Census was misrecorded, mistranscribed or whatever.  It should have been 10 or 11.

We then have the 1851 June Qty Vol 17 p228 birth registration of Elizabeth Kent, mmn Wood.

Thomas Kent married Jane Wood at St Mark's Shelton in 1848 (just spotted it on staffordshirebmd.org.uk).  Things are falling into place - unless someone comes up with contradictory information!

 Many thanks for this lead.
