This is all the information I have for my GG Grandfather
William McGarry born Ireland c1830 died in Cumberland in 1899
Married Ann ?? 1859 ??
William was a miner and in the 1881 census they all lived at 7 Botany Street, Workington, Cumberland.
Children: Margaret Ann McGarry , John McGarry, William McGarry, Charles McGarry, Elizabeth Jane McGarry
Elizabeth Jane married Robert Topping in 1896.
Do these names mean anything to anyone??? I would love to find an irish connection but I have nothing really to go on apart from the fact that my Grandmother (Elizabeth and Roberts daughter) used to visit Ireland as a child.
Thanks

June 1859 Cockermouth 10b/697
William Mcgarry
Ann McGarry
The 1871 census says that Ann was born in Workington but I think if we go back further, we'll find that her father at least came from Ireland. They were very probably cousins.
I'll keep looking.

An interesting marriage!
Marriages Jun 1859
McGARRY Ann Cockermouth 10b 697
McGARRY William Cockermouth 10b 697

1851 census
57 Middle Row, Preston Quarter (Whitehaven)
John M'GARRY (wid) 62 Coal Miner, Ireland
Ann 20 Workington
John 14 Driver in Coal Mine, Workington
Mary MURRAY (inmate, unm) 24 Reeler in Thread Manufactory, Workington
A submitted entry in the IGI suggests that Ann's mother was Ann too.

This gets more interesting by the minute.
I can find no Ann Mcgarry born in Workington in censuses '51 or '41
There is another marriage in Dec 1850, Whitehaven of a William McGarry with a possible spouse, Ann Kennedy.
Then - a death of a William McGarry March 1854, 10b, 315, Whitehaven
Did Ann marry two men called William McGarry?
Curiouser and curiouser.

Sorry, I didn't see Geoff's discovery of Ann in 1851, so forget my barmy theory.

Thank you to you both for the interest. I think you may have found something there Geoff.
Jen I have loads of barmy theories myself but every now and then one if them is right so keep going ;D

Just wondering.....have you any McGarry's on the Isle of Man ??? Just wondering as I have a few in one of my trees.

Sorry - nothing in the Isle of Man - YET ;)
-
Well there are some there ;D...I recently found a connection. It looks like they came from Ireland but from where who knows ::) Also, as you probably know the spelling keeps changing. The latest I have found is McCarry :-\
All of the my IOM people seem to go back and forth between Cumberland or Lancashire. There was a lot of mining on the IOM.....lead and silver.
If you ever do find a connection to IOM let me know ;D Your the first person on RC that I've noticed looking for that surname.

It is the 1st time that I have come across a researcher looking for McGarry also!! My maiden name was McGarry and I am from Workington but I have not researched the McGarry name because my father took his step fathers name when his mother married and therefore the McGarry ancestors were not really mine(does that make sense??). I had always thought that the McGarry name came from Scotland as there was a tale that my grandfather (James McGarry) had a brother that used to visit who was in the Black Watch-I therefore assumed he was Scottish but after these last few years on RC I realised never to assume anything!!!!!! It is not a common name so it would be interesting to know if your McGarry's might be related to mine. All I know is that James married Margaret Sloan around 1937 in Whitehaven at St Begh's RC church. Cass

I have just found my grandparents wedding cert-James' father was William, Wonder if he could be the son of your William, Cass ???
-
I'm afraid all the information I have on the McGarry's in my tree is in my original post. I have no information on any of their descendants other than for Elizabeth McGarry who married Robert Topping and, of course, they are all Toppings.
If I come across any James McGarry's though I will be sure to let you know. :)

Cass...do you have any Murphy's that emigrated to Philadelphia pre 1890...one Annie Murphy who married a John McBride ;D
Just kidding...Murphy's are like Smiths and Jones and Owens....... :P
mab...grasping at teeny tiny straws :-\

Yes I know! Can you imagine trying to trace Fagins and Murphys in Ireland. Have not come across a Annie Murphy as yet but will keep you in mind. Cass

Hi
I'm a bit new to this but here goes
I think William McGarry is also my GG Grandfather
His daughter Margaret Ann McGarry married Hugh Murray in 1882 10b 765. They had 6 children per 1901 census. The oldest was William Thomas b1883. He died on 27/2/1951. He was married to a Mary Greer. I can find no record of their marriage but I have her death certificate that says she was William's widow and I have family photographs. William and Mary were my mothers parents. My mother was born 15/12/1928 in Frizington according to her passport but I can find no record of her birth. I have even been to the record office in Whitehaven. Maybe she was adopted as her mother Mary would have been 44 at the time she was born. My mother died in 1974 so I cannot ask her and my father died in 1984 so I cannot ask him. I was not aware that she was adopted when I was growing up though I do know she had a younger adopted sister. It's all very curious and I hope to find out someday

Hi Gedbarns
How interesting. Do you have any idea whereabouts in Ireland William McGarry came from??
I'm afraid all I have is what I have already mentioned. I have all the descendants of Elizabeth and some photos if you are interested in them.
I have William McGarry b1830 - 1899 married to Ann ??
With the following children:-
Margaret A McGarry c1861
John McGarry c1865

Elizabeth McGarry c1871
regards, Anne-Marie

Hi Anne-Marie
Re William born Ireland 1830
I remember my mother talking about a place called Avoca but don't know whether that was in relation to the Murray side of the family who Margaret Ann b1861 married into or the Greer side of the family who my grandfather (if he was my bilogical grandfather) married. I looked at the Toppings up to 1901. Are you Nora's decendant. I would be intrested in photos and am willing to share mine if you like but I think I have to solve the mystery of my mother's birth first as otherwise they are not really my ancestors. It all takes so much time.
My grandparents somehow got to Otley in Yorkshire from Cumbria and I don't know why. Maybe it was because there was no work in Cumbria. My grandfather ended up being a tannery worker in Otley. Are the Topping descendats still in Cumbria?
I will let you know f I find out anything else
-
Yes Nora was my grandmother. I will send my email via PM.

I remember my mother talking about a place called Avoca
Avoca was the village they used for the TV series Ballykissangel.
-
Thanks GeoffE
That's interesting. You are right just checked it on Wikipedia. My mother would not have got the Avoca link from Ballykissangel as she died in 1974 and the series was not broadcast until 1996
