I have just returned from a visit to Leeds Library (family history) as i am trying to locate a burial date for an ancestor of mine.
He is not to be found on any BMD register(after 1837)
I know he was still alive at the time of his wifes death 1829 and i also know that his family church was St Peter Leeds.
I or should i say we have searched the burial records available in Leeds library from 1829 - 1837(start of official registration) with no luck.
I have just come across a posting on this website which lists a Leeds Burial index, can someone tell me more about this please ?
-
HI durhamlass
If you post full details of the person who you are searching for info about maybe some wise rootschatter could help you out.

The person who's burial I'm intrested in is William Yewdall who lived in Leeds (cavalier hill ) and worked as a farmer.
During my time of searching for this family i have come across numerous spellings of the surname Youdle, Yondell and Yewdale to name a few.

Hi durhamlass,
I have found a William Yewdall. He was born 1810 and was buried, 2nd November, 1834. He was a married man and his "abode" was Harrison's Hospital Lodge. Burial No 2790 at St John the Evangelist. I have found others from St Peter Parish Church buried there. St Peter doesn't have a very big churchyard and so I presume they ran out of space and used St Johns which is also in the centre of Leeds. There are some other Yewdalls' but he is the only William in the index that I searched.
I hope this is your William.
Best wishes,
Elin

Thanks Elin ,that particular William happens to be the son of the William i am looking for ,what i find strange is that you found him listed at St Peters while i have him listed at St Johns Leeds ,i wonder if the service was held at St Peters and the burial at St Johns ?
What intrigues me is where you found the information , is there such a thing as a Leeds burial index and if so where can i get one ?( i have the CD of Leeds & district Burials )
-
Hi Durhamlass,
I found William listed under St John the Evangelist, not St Peter. All I meant was that I have found others buried at St John the Evangelist who I know to have been of the Parish of St Peter. I have wondered too if the service may have taken place at St Peter but the records don't tell you that!
There is a good site called Yorkshire Indexers. http://www.yorkshireindexers.co.uk/forums/portal.php
I have sent you a pm
There isn't a Leeds Burial Index as far as I am aware. Did you check the St John the Evangelist records for William the senior?

Dear Durhamlass;sorry to "butt in " but I come from Leeds & Yendall was a name there ???
Jose
-
'Yendall' I would think is a transcribing error.
When looking at the actual entries I could quite believe how errors have been made.
What surprises me such errors have been carried through the generations.
(Earliest error was Yeadall @1500)?
By the way I research the family name correctly!

-
Dear Mr Yewdall,
I am not disputing your research . I was merely making a general statement .I grew up in Armley Leeds & knew of people called Yendall . Sorry if you misunderstood me .
Jose
-
No offence taken.
Its just that from research done over the last 30years,many actual paper documents have been checked not only by myself but others who have gone around checking various church documents.
What we found was that in the early days people just said their name without being able to write it?
Through the passage of time the surname has been written down (as it sounds) in some cases incorrectly.
The main family group over a period of 400years changed its surname from Yeadall, Udall,Yewdell,Yendall to Yewdall. Believe it or not there are various family groups around the country that spell their surname differently but are still related (very distantly) by having the same forebares.

As a postscript to my earlier message.
I am currently looking through the parish records for St Peter's church for the years 1830 -1837.
The quality of some of the fiche is mindblowing!- The films showing a 'black/grey background with white scratch marks, to represent factual information'. :o
(One hour looking at records then 10minutes away to rest eyes)
No wonder transcriptions can have numerous errors.

One of my "problems" at moment is with same thing .Marsden & Marston .I seem to go round in circles ! Good Luck in your searching .

Ps Ive found the Calverley site interesting .

Hello I would so greatly appreciate if some has access to the Leeds burial index (St Peters, Parish Church of Leeds), if they could search for the Oates family for me. In particuarl I am looking for a William and Mary Oates and their son Edwin who died about 1846. William and Mary were born c1808. All their children were christened in St Peters I believe. Any help greatly appreciated. Dan

Brian: I've just picked up this thread and see that you were having trouble with the fiche for St Peters in Leeds, albeit in 2008.
I had the same problem and then went to WYAS at Sheepscar where they have the original volumes - and they are so clear, it's unbelievable how such copies could have evolved from such immaculate volumes. Worth a thought as you live in the area ;)

My thoughts exactly.
I am in favour of always going to archives, but for speed try the library.

JeannieR thank you so much for your interest and taking the time to help. I think the Edwin you found is the Edwin I was looking for. Edwin Oates (son of William and Mary) was born in 1842 so I believe the 1846 death reg is quite possibly for my Edwin. Both parents, Mary and William Oates died between 1851 and 1861, both born c1808 any info on the Oates greatly appreciated. Many many thanks. Danielle :D
-
Hello Danielle
I am pretty certain, that your Mary Oates, was buried in the 1st quarter of 1861, again at Beckett Street Cemetery, reference number 7908
There was only one Mary Oates, death registered Leeds/March quarter/volume 9b page 257
What other information are you looking for ?
JeannieR
-
Hello JeannieR thank you for the quick reply. You have been a great help and I will order the death certificate for Mary 1861 and William 1855. I wondered if any other information like occupation or residence was provided in the the index that could help verify I have the right family? With thanks

Hello Danielle.....
I am afraid the CDrom I have, of Leeds burials, do's not give addresses or occupations. It do's not always give ages.....
It may be worth your time, going to the Yorkshire Indexers website. It is free, and the people on there are very helpful, and may have more information.
Kind Regards
JeannieR

A very big thank you Philip for finding this information , Yes this is the William i have been searching for and thanks Brian for letting me know.
As i mentioned earlier William was a farmer ,his address is given as Cavalier Hill ( Leeds ) could anyone advise me where i might find any land records or does anyone know where i could find the name of the land owner of this area around 1800 ??
I cannot find any records for William's birth ( i have concentrated on the Leeds area )i thought if i could find any tenancy records it may give me a clue to his place of birth.
Once again Philip thank you.
-
Given that Durhamlass has now got partial information on her William.
Could someone with a paid subscription to one of the paid for websites submit any further info?
Where was William born/what was his parents name or anything else that could contribute to a successful mission.
(If it is found that William was born Bradford, so much the better for me as I can access records easier than Leeds)
Regards Brian
-

Is there more information on the William buried 1835?
