Hello,
Could someone please do a lookup in the 1841 census for John Littlefield. Wife was Louisa and they married in Ropley in 1831. (Info from the IGI)
Thanks in advance. :)
Chris in Australia.

Wow, that was quick. :D Thanks very much.
Showing my ignorance now - not too clued up with parishes, counties etc, - but from the map kindly supplied by Newfster, I'm presuming Kitwood is a small town ?
One other query - is there any way I can find out the parents of John Littlefield. Possibly Elizabeth age 70 is his mother.
Thankyou from Chris
-
Its no more than a hamlet, possibly just a couple of workers cottages and a farm ... .... Ropley itself is a village - altho nowadays Four Marks is a town as such.
You can click on aerial view on that map and zoom in and out to see some dwellings today ....
Have you tried the IGI for John's christening ?
Update: It seems that not many parishes in that part of Hants are in the IGI - where did you get the Marriage Register entry ?
-
Hello Newfster,
I'll check out the map more thoroughly. Thank you.
Had a look on IGI for the christening - several John Littlefield, but only one with with parents and they are listed as Robert & Mary which doesn't tally with the 1841 census.
The marriage info is from family search website and Louisa's maiden name was Merrett.
I've got the family travelling to Aust on 'Sea Queen' in 1849 with two more children, Moses and Emma. They had another daughter born in Aust.
Cheers, Chris

Wondered if they had 'gone' by 1851 .... Family Search is the LDS site including the IGI, so whatever you found isnt an original 'extracted' from Registers Record ?
Most of that name seem to come from the Portsmouth area.
Try another post asking for Ropley Parish Register search - some on here have original resources..
Failing that an email to Hants Archives (google it) in Winchester should sort it !
:)

Kitwood is a small hamlet in the parish of Ropley - no church and not much else. Photo of the "centre" here ;)

The marriage that you found on the IGI - details as follows:
John Littlefield married Louisa Merritt 24 Dec 1831 in Ropley.
This could be John's baptism:
John Littlefield born 11 Jul 1808 baptised 12 Nov 1809, Ropley, parents Robert & Elizabeth Littlefield
Siblings appear to be:
Mary b 17 Dec (1793) bapt 25 Jan 1794
Ruth b 16 Jan bapt 27 May 1798
James b 11 Jul bapt 15 Aug 1802
Richard b 20 Jun baptised 28 Jul 1805
Robert Littlefield married Elizabeth Chandler 6 Nov 1793 in Ropley.

See ! Ask and ye shall find.
As I said, its not an 'extracted' marriage record from the IGI, but hopefully the fruit of someone elses research
Form submitted by a member of the LDS Church. The form lists the submitter's name and address and may include source information. The address may be outdated. Details vary. To find the form, you must know the batch and sheet number.
I expect Nell has the full original resource tho, to be able to list the other entries ....

Hello Nell
Thanks so much - what a wealth of information :D
Is it possible to find out any more about the other children of Robert & Elizabeth Littlefield - or am I hoping for too much. ;)
Many thanks for your help Nell & Newfster.
-
Difficult to say what happened to them - there are a few Littlefields about.
Ruth seems to have died in 1823, aged 25 and unmarried.
The other first names are much less distinctive and so make it less easy to trace them :-\ If they appear on later census, it may make it easier to know which one to follow.

Hello,
Would it be possible to find John Littlefield's siblings - Richard b 1805, James b 1802 and Mary b 1793 on the 1841 census - or are there too many Littlefields' around the area to make this easy / possible to track.
The map was great as was the photo - loved it.
Cheers from Chris
-
I can't see Richard, there is a James in Portsea of the right sort of age, listed as a painter. But there were two other James Littlefields baptised around the same date in Portsea. :-\ No obvious candidates buried in Ropley (wrong age).
Mary probably married but I can't work out to whom - there are some marriages listed for a Mary Littlefield, but none apparently in Ropley or nearby.
Nell
-
OK - not much luck there, but thanks anyhow Nell.
Just one other question - from an outsider it's not obvious - but why is Hampshire called Hants.
Chris
-
Hampshire
reduced from Old English - Hamtunscir; named for the city of Southampton, which originally was simply Hamtun.
Norman scribes mangled the county name to Hauntunescire, later Hantescire, hence the abbrev. Hants.

Thanks Newfster.
Well, I guess this is as far as I can go at this stage, with the Littlfield family. Maybe it will niggle at me and I'll want to find out more at a later date, but in the meantime thanks to both of you for providing a bit more info. :D
Cheers, from Chris.
PS Cute furry friends, Newfster. ;D

Hi Chris,
Please let me know what help you need & I'll get on to it if I can. I have access to all census details for Littlefield 1841-1911 in the UK.
How can we exchange email addresses to make things easier?
Are you a member of Genes Reunited (£10 per year) or do you look at Littlefield Genealogy Forum (foc).
Where are you located, UK or overseas?
Best Wishes
John Little.....
