Title: Neighbour at Lewknor?
Post by: patannk on Wednesday 03 September 08 08:34 BST (UK)
I am trying to track down the family of George Neighbour, who say they come from Lewknor, in the censuses?
George (b. abt 1840 at Ealing, Middlesex) is with his parents Thomas and Ann at Aston Rowant in 1841 and 1851, then they move to Lewknor by 1861.

Thomas was born abt 1815 at Lewknor.
Is there perhaps a c. rec for him in the PRs?
Does he have any siblings? ???

I see a marriage rec. in Thame district for 1838 for a Thomas Neighbour...
Did he marry at Lewknor?

By 1871, I have George and his wife, Harriet living at Stokenchurch, but back in Ealing, I have about 4 generations of Robert Neighbours, who I am sure must be linked to Thomas from Lewknor.....

From the Lewknor PRs (Oxon FHS CD) -

Baptised May 14 1815 Thomas Neighbour s/o Thomas & Ann, lab.

Jun 15 1805 Thomas Neighbour b otp married Ann Quartermain sp otp

Witnesses: John Smith, William Applebee, Abraham Quartermain

Other children of the above:

Nov 10 1805 Elizabeth (buried 1808)
Jul 2 1809 Robert (buried 1809)
Apr 1 1810 Robert & Richard twins
Apr 6 1817 Elizabeth
May 21 1820 William

Unfortunately the Lewknor marriage PRs stop at 1837 so I can't help you with the 1838 marriage.

Thank you very much for those records. ;D
With the names of the siblings, I will now try and discover how the Ealing Neighbours are related to this family.

I managed to find Thomas (b. abt 1786) and Ann (nee Quartermain) and most of their other children at Lewknor in 1841.... only William (c. 1820) is missing.

Is there a death record for him, or maybe he just married and moved elsewhere?

In 1841, there is a 2nd Richard Neighbour living at Lewknor (b. abt 1806) who does not belong to Thomas and Ann. He is married to Rebecca.
Who were his parents?
He fits into this puzzle somewhere too, because one of his children was also born at Ealing!

Maybe this Richard's father is a ?brother of Thomas (b. abt 1786)?
 :-\
I am ever hopeful, as I still have a Mary Neighbour (b. abt 1801) living in Ealing, with 4 children, but with no husband present......
The children are too old to belong to the missing William, so may belong to one of Richard's siblings?

This must be the other Richard you mention:-

baptised Lewknor June 23 1805 Richard Neighbour baseborn s/o Sophia.

I didn't find a burial for William (1820) nor did I find a marriage for him, but he'd likely have married after 1837 and that's where these marriage records stop.

I did find these marriages which might be of interest -

Apr 24 1810 James Hawkins of Wheatfield & Sophia Neighbour
Witnesses: Thomas Neighbour, Susan Auger, Charlot Hayes.

May 26 1836 Robert Neighbour b otp & Mary Ann Waklen sp
Witnesses: Richard Neighbour, Elizabeth Walkelin.

Sophia was the sister of Thomas:

Thomas Neighbour May 4 1783 s/o Richard & Elizabeth
Sophy Neighbour Jun 4 1786 d/o Richard & Elizabeth.

Another Richard for you to cope with!!  ;D

Many thanks for looking up these records!
 :-*
I can cope with one more Richard, but feel I have failed so far, in my duty to locate poor Mary's husband's family...... :-[
I had hoped that Thomas would have half a dozen brothers?

Ah well, "ad augusta per angusta!" as they say?

Richard Neighbour married Elizabeth Davies Oct 10 1782.

Their only other child  baptised in Lewknor -

Louisa Apr 18 1789.

It looks as though Richard was buried June 4 1793.

No other brothers I'm afraid!  :(

Many thanks for the name, Louisa!
I have come across that name in later generations, so it is helpful to know that it goes further back as well? There are so many Mary, Jane, Sarah and Elizabeths, that a Louisa is like a breath of fresh air?
 ;D
If Richard died in 1793, that might explain why I don't have my six brothers?

The link to the Neighbours in Ealing must lie further back.... ???

One more request, before I leave you in peace......

In the Stokenchurch PRs I have a Hannah Neighbour who m. John Hester on 25 Nov 1772. It is listed that she came from Lewknor.
She sounds as if she might be of the same generation as the Richard who m. Elizabeth Davies in 1782?
???
Is there a c. rec for Hannah at Lewknor?

I should not have promised to stop asking questions...
 ::)
Is Hannah's brother, Richard, the one who m. Elizabeth Davies, or are there other contenders in the PRs?

I think it's time I take a break, from chasing Neighbours all over the countyside!
There are just too many of them hiding in villages with PRs that I don't have access to.... :'(

Many thanks, for all your help!
I will ask Father Christmas for a few more OFHS CDs.....

I can't see another Richard of that generation.

I've just found another child of Moses & Mary who I must have missed  ::)

Feb 7 1762 Jessy d/o Moses & mary Neighbour.

There is also yet another Richard having children baptised with wife Ann at the same time as Moses & Mary:

Jan 7 1759 Maria
Jul 13 1760 Lucy (the fact that they had a daughter christened Lucy on the exact same day as did Moses & Mary must surely mean that Moses and Richard were brothers?)
Oct 18 1761 Martha

I have seen the name Lucy Neighbour elsewhere in nearby villages, so will see if they fit into the picture somehow....

Ima little late to this party but I’d love to chat about Neighbours in this part of Oxford.

I’m working backward from my relative Thomas Neighbour b. circa 1787 in South Weston OX. His family eventually made it out to Herefordshire and some later skipped the border into Wales.

I have a wife Elizabeth (no LNAB) with no marriage record and children : Edward, Thomas, Mary Ann, William, and John. Edward was born in Haseley, Oxf., the next three in Almeley, Herf., and John in Woonton, Herf.

Does any of this ring any bells? I’d love to chat more and compare notes.
