Title: Attwood family
Post by: Karvan on Tuesday 02 September 08 22:19 BST (UK)
I'm trying to find details of William Attwood. His son was Alfred William and my grandfather. I have him mentioned in the 1881 census in Princess St. Alf lived in Princess St, Maidenhead after WW1.
Any ideas?

karvan - hi

I'm afraid there isn't enough data in your post   ???

If you have William in 1881 in Princes Street  -   can you give the census reference?   or at least the town ?   and possibly William's age or year of birth   :D    And Alfred's year of  birth   ???  :D

Name and street is not really enough to work with   :D

The Attwood family in 1851:

HO107.  P. 1512.  Fol. 392  Pg. 15

Stanhope Street, St Clement Dane, London

ATTWOOD
Henry  Head  M  31  Police Constable  B.  Wilts. Salisbury
Sarah Ann  Wife  32                             B. Berks, Wokingham
Henry  Son  7                                       B. Middx. St Martins
Alfred  Son  5                                       B.  Middx. St Giles
Eliza Ann  Dau  2                                 B. Middx. St Martin

and in 1861:

RG9.  P. 180  Fol. 62  Pg. 16

10 Star Court, St Clement Danes

ATTWOOD
Henry  Head  M  40  Labourer   B. Wilts. Salisbury
Sarah Ann  Wife  M  32              B.  Berks. Wokingham
Henry  Son  17  News Agent     B. Middx. St Martins
Eliza  Dau  13                            B.    ~          ~
Sarah Ann  Dau  2                     B.  Middx. St Clement Danes

This seems a possible for their marriage:

Q3. 1843 Shoreditch District  Vol 2. Pg. 369
Henry Attwood and Sarah Ann Bedford on the page

ON the IGI there is a marriage Henry Attwood and Sarah Ann Bedford
7 September 1843 St. Leonards, Shoreditch

William George Attwood birth reg. Wycombe district Q2. 1864 Vol.3a  Pg. 430

William's birth certificate will confirm Sarah's maiden name and thus the marriage (or not ! )

In 1871 Eliza seems to have a suname Etherington, and to be a step-daughter; I cannot explain this   ???

In 1881 Sarah is a widow.
Death reg. for Henry Attwood  B. 1822
Wycombe district  Q3. 1879  Vol. 3a. Pg. 270

whilst looking for that I also noticed :

Henry Attwood b. 1844 died Wycombe district Q2. 1873 Vol. 3a. Pg. 383
This is possibly William's eldest brother ?

Hi Mum44
Thank you so much for this. I had trouble finding them  - the Allwood bit would have stumped me!
If you can get Annies parents etc that would be good. I have a very old photo of her - my mum told me years ago that she lived in Boyn Hill.

Karvan

A hint -  when you can't find a family on a census using "correct" details, leave off one bit of information - usually its the surname that's mis-transcribed - so put in

William   born 1864  Buckingham  Lacy Green

Then read down til you come to one which fits - ie: wife Ann

or
Alfred  born 1886  Berkshire

Read down til you come to one that sound right - eg: parents William and Ann

Various variations on the above - and you can usually - although not always - find them   ;D

In this case - not too bad, because it will deliver the results alphbetically by surname and this was A  ;D

"Robert Johnson  Head  M  24  Gen Lab   B. Berks. Holyport
Sarah A     ~      Wife  M  21                    B. London
Alfred W    ~       Son  1 mth                    B. Berks, Bray
Henry W    ~      Son  1                            B. Bucks.  Bown End
Sarah Attwodd  Mother in Law  Wid  62  Anniut.  B. Berks, Wokingham
William   ~        Brother in law   S  17   Porter  B.  Bucks.  Lacy Green "

This Robert Johnson who married into the Attwoods is brother of my great-great-grandfather George Johnson, b. Maidenhead, Berks in 1842 or 1843.  ;)
