Title: Padre Moloney/2nd Leinster Reg.
Post by: trish1120 on Tuesday 02 September 08 14:01 BST (UK)
Hi,

Could anyone provide me with any extra info. on;

J.P. Moloney ( Chaplain) of the 2nd Leinster Reg. during WW1

He is probably the cousin of my Grandmother and need extra info to smash my brickwall on the Moloney line in Ireland. Plus I am very interested in all the WW1 men I have found in my family during my research.

I had his possible initials from a old family document, but found a ref. to him on a Rootschat posting from 2005;

 Re Power from Waterford

Any help appreciated,

Trish

Hello Trish,

I haven't been able to find a medal index card, or other info for him so far, but I'll put a direct link up to the post you mentioned, so that anyone else that wants can read the story.

Hello Trish,

I must admit I did it by guesswork  :)

I've also finally got the NA medal index card search to do what I want it to do  ::)

It looks like I may have found him, but the spelling is different. John Patrick Molony, OBE, MC

The medal card is on Ancestry;
There is another MIC with his Military Cross award, but that is only available from TNA at the moment.

Thanks Phil,

Great Rog,
No, had not found that as did not know what the initials J.P. were- had "googled" just about every combo of the name and title I  could think  ::)of.

I am very greatful for all your help. Just need to prove he is mine though- but the link to Galway is pretty much the clincher 8)

Now have a Monsignor to add to the Major Generals and Majors I have in my tree- plus a couple of Privates- even found I am related to (Sir ) General M. R- - e.

All the best,
Trish ( in Sydney)
( better hit the sack now 2.30 a.m. here)

Thank you Liverpool Annie. ;D

Have not been able to do much today, am sick in bed with flu.

To everyone who has helped me I greatly appreciate it.

As I now know his Fathers name extra research to link his family to my Moloneys will be much easier.

Hi Trish,

If you are interested, I have two photographs of Father John Patrick Molony.  One shows him in his military uniform and the other in his priest clothing.  I also have photos of his father Michael Molony, his brother James Vincent Molony  and his sister Mary Catherine Molony as well as printed info about the family.

Cheers,

Ed ( Perth Western Australia )

Hi Ed,
Greetings from Sydney!
Wow. I never expected a reply like yours after all these years since my original query.
I have been away for a couple of days and will get back to you tonight when I get Home and dig out my original info.
Yes, I am very interested as I have got no further with my Moloney line.

After you make 3 posts ( as you are a new member) we can exchange email addresses through the PM System.

Trish :)

Hi Trish,

Glad to hear from you. I guess we are distant cousins.

Michael Molony was my great grand father on my mother's side of the family. His daughter Mary Catherine
married Edward Finnegan in Belfast. He and his brothers were wine and spirit merchants in Dundee Scotland in the early 1900s. You can access this info from the Dundee postal directories which are on line. John Patrick's father, Michael Molony was a customs and excise officer who also spent some time in Dundee. If you were in the liquor trade, he would be a handy contact for the Finnegan boys.

Edward Finnegan and his brother in law James Vincent Molony came to W.A. aboard the SS Orient in 1906
and Mary Catherine and four kids followed on the RMS Ophir in 1910. J V Molony went to WW1 with the 1st AIF, first as a reinforcement at Gallipoli then was wounded at Pozieres on the Western Front and evacuated back to Australia.

Looking forward to sharing this stuff with you Trish.

Cheers,

Ed.

Hello there,

I was interested to come across this dicsussion thread while doing some research on John Patrick Molony O.B.E., M.C.

You might like to know that the gallant Padre's medals are extant, as I own them! The medal group comprises;

- O.B.E.
- Military Cross
- 1914-15 Star
- British War Medal
- Interallied Victory Medal
- General Service Medal 1918. GV issue with clasp 'Iraq'

Attached find an image of the medal group (the forum posting restrictions on images have affected the quality of the image)

If anyone wantsa to exchange photographs / images with me, I will be happy to oblige - just ask.

As information.

Hi Mark,

My name is Ed.  I've emailed Trish a couple of photos of the padre. He was one of my mother's uncles. Would be interested in swapping details about the Molony family. I know a fair bit about them but there are a few blanks. I have photos of his father Michael, his brother Jim and sister Mary Catherine.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers,

Ed

Hi Ed,

Thanks for yours.

I have not written-up my own notes on the Padre yet, and do not have anything substantive additional to what is already on the WWW (I suspect that yourself and Trish have covered all those sources by now?) - however I might be able to answer specific questions pertaining to his medals and military service if that helps. I can also forward copies of his medal roll entries etc, as well as a better quality image of his medal group. If that helps then fire away.

If possible I would like a copy of the image you have of him in uniform - I will send you a separate PM with my email address for sending that as possible.

Considering the present day crisis in Iraq / Kurdistan, it's sobering coincidence that we are here talking about a Padre who was once the Senior Chaplain and Vicar-General, Mesopotamia  Expetionary Force back in circa 1198-1920!

I look forward to hearing back from you when you can.

In the meantime best wishes.

Mark

Hi Mark,

I must confess to finding your interest intriguing. Are you from the Spellissy side of the family? The padre's father Michael Molony married a Catherine Spellissy. He was a customs and excise officer. I would be happy to email any photos you want.

Cheers,

Ed.

Hi Ed,

Thanks for yours - I sent you my email contact addres by Private Message (PM) yesterday, so please check your PM inbox tray for that.

I am not related to the Molony's (or Spellissy's) in any way - my interest is just with Padre John Patrick Molony O.B.E., M.C., and his military service, only because I own the recipients medals.

Best wishes.

Mark
