My GGgrandmother was apparently born in Kilkenny - i do not know if its the city or the county ::)
It was written in various census in England that she was born in Ireland/Kilkenny, Ireland. Given her age on the census and her marriage certificate i estimate her DOB to be circa 1845.
Her marriage certificate in Halifax, Yorkshire in 1867 gives her fathers name as James Butler, Labourer deceased.
so what now ? where do i go ? how do i find out more ?

I would try the following site:
http://kilkenny.brsgenealogy.com
which now has nearly all the available Kilkenny records on line. It has been invaluable to me - but it costs!

I can exclude my great great grandfather of Monabrogue, Ballylarkin, Kilkenny as he was not a labourer but a farmer.
Use http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml to see in what kind of building your James Butler lived in. People with many acres are farmers. A an acre or so would make them a subsistence farmer. A house with a yard would make them a wage earner.
If your ancestor was a labourer then it is unlikely that he had land as he would have no use for it and probably couldn't afford the rent.
It could also be that he rented a room from someone who is a tenant listed on Griffiths in which case you will never find him.
Good luck with your search.
James Butler.

I have spent nearly 30 years trying to find my GGgrandfather James Butler, his son, also James Butler, was born in Laois close to the Kilkenny boarder, I was pointed to Ballyragget but no luck
My great grandfathers details are James Butler born 1853 in Laois died 1927 in Dublin he and his father were cattlemen (Herds) he married Mary Delaney in 1872 and lived at Farren Cross Roads and Tintore, they moved to Dublin around 1900.
I do have a 25 marker DNA sample
