James Doherty son of John Doherty and Grace McLaughlin of BENDUFF baptised on 28th August 1855. Sponsors Henry Doherty and Bridget McLaughlin. Can anyone point to a map that would show where Benduff is. I know that it is near Carndonagh But where exactly? Thanks for any light on the subject.

Have just joined Rootschat and saw your post. I know it's a few years since you asked "Is Benduff a townland?" Benduff is halfway between Carndonagh and Malin. You mentioned a Henry Doherty. My stepmother lived in a house which was owned by a Henry Doherty until has death in 60's-70's. It is known as Brochan House as it was used as a feeding post during Gorta Mor or Great Famine of mid 1800's. A plaque was erected in 1995 to mark 150 years since then. Could it be the same Henry?
Hope you get this after all this time.

Thank you for responding. This branch of the Doherty family is my grandmothers family. Sadly I know little of them. I don't have the "nickname" of this Doherty branch which may have helped. Tryng to research Doherty in Donegal has been very difficult. I had hoped that having a townland would help.
All I know is that they lived in Benduff. I am assumng that Henry would be a close relative possibly the brother of John Doherty. I googled Brochan House but nothing came up. Do you know where I could find out more? Thank you once again.

Obviously the Henry I had is not the sponsor of your ancestor. He would't have been around in 1855. I did find a Henry in 1901 Census, aged 71. Would have been in right age bracket. He had son Henry, born abt 1878, and a grandson, also Henry, born 1900. That could be "my" Henry. Do you have any other Christian names. I shall be in Carndonagh area in the next few weeks and will see what I can find out. I have relatives in Benduff. As for the Brochan House, I don't think you'll find anything online although there must have been some paperwork for the Commerative Plaque to be put up. Will try and find out and if anyone knows nickname for Doherty of Benduff.
I appreciate what it's like, trying to research Doherty in and around Carndonagh. My grandfather was one of them, and his parents were, as far as I can find out, both Doherty. It's like looking for a needle in a haystack. I wish I'd started when my mother was still alive, she knew who everyone was, and how they were related.
Will be in touch if I get any info

Does anyone know why Benduff Townland does not show up in the 1901/1911 census? Was there a name change or was it amalgamated into another townland?
-
Are you sure Benduff is a townland? According to http://www.thecore.com/seanruad there is no townland in Donegal starting with 'ben' and even using part of the word like 'duff' etc. nothing close.

Yes, you already posted that link and Benduff is shown there but can't find it in SeanRuad database which is why I'm wondering if it was actually a townland.

Benduff is the Anglicization of the original Irish name "An Bhinn Dubh", The Black Peak. As with a lot of Irish place names the English version can go through a number of changes down through the years before the form accepted today comes into being.
When the Tithe Applotments for Donagh were written in 1828 Benduff due to it's small size no doubt was grouped with Gortlary and Kinnaglug : http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/donaghtithes.htm.
When Griffiths Valuation was written in 1857 Benduff was incorporated into the townland of Churchland Quarters, also known as Carrowtemple, Moneyshandoney & Carrick for the purposes of the valuation. The Ordnance Survey maps used to illustrate Griffiths Valuation on the askaboutireland web site use the names Binduff, Gortlary & Keenaglog for the townlands used in the Tithe Applotments. There is also Binduff Lower, a separate, adjacent townland.
This is a map of the townlands in Donagh civil parish: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bhilchey/MDonagh.html which shows where Churchland Quarters sits.
This link gives the townlands which were used for the 1901 census: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Donegal/Carndonagh/
And this gives the townlands which were used for the 1911 census :http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Donegal/Carndonagh/
So, I would guess if you are trying to locate ancestors in these census I would look under Churchland Quarters. And to answer the question why Benduff isn't listed as a separate townland in either census I would guess it's a case that the townland is just too small to be considered in it's own right and was as you suspected incorporated into the larger Churchlands townland.
Hope this helps.

Thank you for all that information. From what I gather the Sean Ruad database is based on 'General Alphabetical Index to the Townlands and Towns, Parishes and Baronies of Ireland' (1851).

following on from the details Bannerman posted - on the 1st Edition OSI maps a location named Binduff is shown within the townland of Churchland Quarters - see :
Binduff / Churchland Quarters (http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,647687,946773,6,7)
It looks like it could be the name of a village or house ?
The location is about 1km north of the centre of Carndonagh town.
Google maps shows a location named Benduff slightly further north, but still within the townland of Churchland Quarters.

Thank you to everyone who has taken the tiome out to help me. I do appreciate it. Benduff has been such a puzzle.

Benduff is definitely a townland, I was there yesterday. It lies halfway between Carndonagh & Malin. In Census it would probably be included in Churchlands Quarter but would need to look that up. I'm sure the area is shown in GV Ordnance Survey map

Benduff is not showing in the census but the area should be covered by Churchland Quarters Cardonagh ED
