Title: Marriage Bilston
Post by: emgee on Saturday 30 August 08 23:35 BST (UK)
I'm looking for record of marriage between Ellen Welsh - or Walsh - (shown unmarried in 1881 census at 4 Ct 3 Temple St Bilston) and David Edwards. They are shown married in 1891 census with 2 children aged 1 and 3 at 1 Coradines Bldg. Her mother and brother living next door.

The Marriage is showing on UK BMD to have  taken place at Coseley Christ  Church in 1887 of David Edwards and Ellen Welsh. You can either conact Dudley Registry Office for the Cert,or the GRO using the reference April Quarter,Volume 6c,Page 3.

Hi Emgee,

I have just realised that the Patrick (and Mary) Welch/Welsh/Walsh that I was asking about on your other thread were living next door to your Ellen in 1881.

I was only asking as they seem to have connections with a McDonough family who may be related to my fathers paternal line (still trying to work out all the connections.

Definitely worth looking up the catholic church records for your relatives though, if they are related to the family next door.

Sheila

Hi Sheila
Sorry for the delay. I thought this thread was completed.
I was aware of Ellen's neighbours and always thought thet might be related but I have not been able to establish Ellen's or her brother Michael's birthdates. Nor have I found their father (John)'s death or marriage to Catheraine. (I believe all these occured  in Bilston in the 1850's)
In 1871 the family are at RG10 2951 17 29 (1 4ct Oxford st Bilston and in 1861 at Bullocks Fold  (RG9 200761 16. In 1851 it may be them at Brick Buildings Coseley St HO107 2021 438 45.
In 1871 there is a Patsy Welsh and family at Temple St 3ct 4h and in 1861 there is a Patrick and Mary Welsh at Temple St 10Ct 10H
Michael got married from Temle st in 1890
Were you  sugesting the book Catholic Church Records or merely the records generally?
regards  Emgee

Hi Emgee,

The registers for Holy Trinity Catholic Church at Bilston are held at the Diocesan Archives, St Chad's, Birmingham.  I think there may also be a copy of the films at Wolverhampton Archives.

Catholic baptismal records do note date of birth and mother's maiden name as well as godparents, so can be very useful for finding additional details.

I am currently trying to transcribe the baptismal index into an Access database but so far I have done "A"s and most of the "B"s so it will be a long time before I get to "W".  Mean-time, if I do come across any Welsh/Walsh/Welch records I will try to remember to let you know.

Likewise if I make any progress I'll let you know.

Hi EmGee,

Patsy Welsh married Mary Lyden at Holy Trinity on 25th August 1855.

Don't know if it's any use to you and not much detail but if you'd like an image of the church entry (not a full register entry) then just PM me with an email address.

And so sorry, I missed the John Welsh marriage but can see the margin entry for the names attached to the previous page and it was John Welsh and Catherine Cavanagh, if that is any help to you.

[addendum: at holy Trinity (4 entries) after 28th October 1857, FREEBMD has 1857q4]

Hi Shelia

Thanks for the above and for the entry copies by email.
The Welsh / Cavanagh marriage is certainly interesting but I can not be sure until I can trace John's childrens' birth.
There was a son Michael born (according to his 1922 Death Cert and the 1861 Census) in 1857. His 1890 Marriage Cert and other Census'say 1859.
His Sister Ellen appears to have been born in 1854 /5 (according to census' in 1861, 1871 and 1901. Others put her birth in 1861.
Both were born in Bilston.
So far I haven't found them but the dates suggest that the parents were wed before 1854.
By 1861 Catherine was a widow so I expect to find John's death between 1857  and 1861.

If you come across anything else that's relevant I would be most grateful.

Hi EmGee

can't find Ellen at present but just to confuse you even more, I'm sending you another image which is on my "to be replaced" list as it is so faint (but some of the register pages just are that bad).

However, I just happened to have it as I was interested in the entry above Michael

For Michael,  I think it says (my translation from the latinized record):
born on 23 September 1856 (there is a FREEBMD entry 1856q4 W'ton 6b 416)
and baptised on 28th of the same month 1856
Michael Welsh son of John and Catherine (nee Craven???)
godparents: Michael Cairns amd Mary Ann Gallagher

To put it in context, I have several family names spelt differently up to 50% of the time, so I'll put Ellen on my list to look out for next time I'm at the archives too.

Hi Sheila

Many, many thanks for the baptism record and the translation.
After looking for Michael for quite some time I am pleased to learn his birthday the day before it's anniversary!!
If Ellen's records also show the mother's nee name to be Graven that would be quite conclusive.

The Walsh / Graven 1849 marriage is also hopefull.
Michael changed the family name from Welsh to Walsh prior to his marriage.

Thanks again.

Sheila, I forgot.

There is a record of a John Welsh death in Wolverhampton District in March qtr. 6b 384
I need to check who was the informant.

Hi Sheila

I was very grateful  when you found Michael's Baptism details but since then I have been unable to locate his birth Certificate.
The only record that the GRO and Wolverhampton Registry can find for the birth of  Michael Walsh on  the 23 September 1856 shows parents John and Catherine Walsh but her maiden name is Nolan!
I believe you compiled a copy of the baptism records, if so could you check if there was also a baptism of Michael on the same date to parents of the same name but with the mother's maiden name of Nolan?

Kind regards

Mike
