Kathleen I cannot thank you enough for not only the details but also your quick response.
It has opened up a whole new avenue of research now that I know the specifics of Joseph’s birth date in England.
At the risk of abusing your generosity might you be able to help with the questions below . . .
. . . but first some background so that you may appreciate my interest . . . the son Charles Gage Middleditch born 1893 married in Ontario (it is thought) Cecile Perchival who had been born in France. . . . They had a daughter Marcelle Lisett Middleditch born February 1920 (presumably in Amertsberg, Ontario). The family left Canada for France when (it is thought) Marcelle was a baby (perhaps 2-4 years old). Marcelle would later meet her future husband in Arras France in 1946 when he was stationed there with the Royal Air Force. They would move to England where they had a daughter and later still the three of them emigrated to Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). . . so you can see it is an interesting mix of people and places and the journeys each took that created this Middleditch lineage.
My questions are:
1. Can you find a marriage for Charles Gage Middleditch?
2. If so, does the information give details of the wife, e.g., parents, place of birth?
3. I do not think (but do not know for certain) that they had another child while in Canada.
4. Any Canadian Emigration records available re them leaving Canada?
My thanks once again
Bryan

http://www.geopatronyme.com/ shows only one Middleditch born in France between 1891 and 1990. This person was born somewhere between 1916 and 1940 in Maroeuil, Pas de Calais, France. (very close to Arras). This could be a child of Charles Gage Middleditch?
Charles and brother Harry James's WWI attestation papers are at:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/001042-100.01-e.php
www.ellisisland.com shows a couple of hits for Charles (G) Middleditch, resident of Maroeuil. In 1919 he appears to be entering NY with his wife, Cecile Alex. Middleditch. He returns in 1922 - gives his father in law as Mr A. Percheval, at Marocuil (sic), P.d.C., France.
In the 1919 the Ellis Island link to the manifest is broken; you can find the original manifest at www.stevemorse.org. They are at Series T715, Roll 2675, Frame 645.
Charles G. Middleditch, 27, marine rock driller, Canadian/French, last residence Maroeuil
wife Cecilie Alex. Middleditch, 22, housewife, last residence ditto.
Relative Alfred Percival, Maroeuil.
They were headed to Amherstburg. Charles, at least, had previously been in the US, in Detroit in 1912. He is listed as b. Ridgetown and she was b. Maroeuil.
Interestingly if you go to http://www.geopatronyme.com/ and put in Percheval you do find one hit in Maroeuil between 1891-1915.
http://www.planete-genealogie.fr/berrannice/veninpagnier/fiche/individu/?IndiID=123
- this is also very interesting. This would seem likely to be your Cecile's family but they list her with a different husband. They don't say when the marriage took place and one child is given a DOB of 1927 - so might she have remarried? Does this ring any bells?
Charles Gage Middleditch's full army records (available from Canadian Archives once you've found his attestation papers online) might give some interesting information.

Bryan,
Haven't found their marriage info yet, but have this item:
U.S. Immigration Service inspection memorandum
Oct. 11, 1921 - New York
Cecelia Middleditch age 25 accompanied by 'son' - Marsalles, age 1 9/12 born Amherstburgh.
Destination France on the Rotterdam.
Also found Charles' immigration record which I have sent to you by P.M.

They arrived in Buffalo in the above-mentioned and I found
a Manifest dated Nov. 21, 1821 for their journey to France.
As Jorose mentioned, you will find his return trip in 1922 in the Ellis Island website.
In September 1923 Charles is shown applying for admission to Detroit.
Do you know if he went to California?

Hi all,
I recently came across this thread for the Middleditch family. My great-grandmother's brother, Gordon Roy Conn, married Mabel Ellen Middleditch of Amherstberg in June 1912. Although both were born in Ontario, they also lived in Detroit (small part of the world that - lots of too-ing and fro-ing over the boarder).
Gordon & Mabel are still married in 1917 when he registers for the US draft. Also noted is that they have a child, whom we believe to be "Cousin Alice". By the census 1920, Gordon & Mabel have parted. He is living with his grandparent and she is living with one of her sisters and brothers-in-law and their two children. There is no further mention of Alice. Mabel is remarried before 1930.
I am on the hunt for cousin Alice... Have you ever come across any mention of her in researching the family?
I appreciate your time.
Best regards,
Lili
