My grandfather Andrew Scott b.Oct 12 1869 might have been from Annaclare, with parents of either John Scott and Anna Carroll, or father Henry Scott & mother?. Not wanting to send for birth cert. until I am sure of parents. Any help would be appreciated

hi madie and welcome to rootschat!
griffiths valuation of ireland only has a george scott in annaclare, grange.
however there is a henry scott in salters grange, grange, and john scott in
carganamuck and ballymackilmurry,grange.
something at the back of my mind says i've seen your names somewhere
before so it might be worth a search through the boards.
is there a reason you think andrew was born in annaclare?

RE: ANNACLARE SCOTTS; A COUSIN VISITED IRELAND IN 1999 AND FROM THE FAMILY'S DESCRIPTION OF THE HOME'S LOCATION "NEAR THE ROAD TO PORTADOWN IN ANNACLARE" SAW A HOME, AND SPOKE TO CURRENT OWNER WHO CONFIRMED IT WAS PREVIOUSLY OWNED BY THE SCOTT FAMILY. THE CURRENT HOME WAS BUILT IN 1830. ANDREW SCOTT'S DEATH CERT AND IMMIGRATION INFO ONLY REFERRED TO BEING FROM ARMAGH. I UNDERSTOOD HIS FATHER DIED WHEN HE WAS 13, AND MOTHER REMARRIED TWICE AFTER THAT, SO I THINK WITH LITTLE REAL INFORMATION TO GO ON I AM JUST TRYING ANYTHING. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.

I can’t add a lot but can tell you that Annaclare is the right place for Scotts & they were farmers. They were known to my family up to the 1940s, maybe later & in my research in the locality I have come across the name a lot.
For research in that area the most likely church for baptism records would be Kildarton but unfortunately to the best of my knowledge they are not transcribed anywhere & are not filmed by the LDS or in PRONI so the only way to see them is to visit the church. Salters Grange is another possibility as is Loughgall with a small likelihood of Kilmore, all of these are available through the LDS family history centres.
Good luck.

Thank you Mary, I also found this info, its funny how the names seem right, but I believe John died when my grandfather was about 13, and apparently was still in Ireland in 1882. I appreciate the help.

Thank you creaney,
this is good information. I heard Andrew's father was a farmer in Armagh so this would seem the right direction. At some point I will come to Ireland if I can't get my search figured out through the LDS, the internet, and nice people like yourself.

Hi again,
I've sent you a pm. On it I think the Ann Eliza I mentioned is his mother. Also the details of his fathers death plus Andrews occupation.
Check out the site for yourself. www.proni.gov.uk

My first attempt at genealogy so please be patient.
My Mother and I went to live at Annaclare during the war in 1940 and remained there until 1944.
The family living there at that time consisted of:
George Scott the eldest boy, Elizabeth Adelaide Couser Ne. Scott (my grandmother) and Thomas Scott the younger brother.
There was another brother who was killed in an accident while still a boy and a younger sister Nellie whose married name was Blacklock and she lived in Liverpool.
My grandmother was the only one to have children, my mother Dorothy Joyce and a son Terence. I am the only descendant.
George Scott died in 1943 or 4 and Annaclare was sold.
It was a beautiful property of 100 acres with fine old buildings. The new house was built about 1870, there were the ruins of an old house nearby.
Uncle George said the family came there from Scotland in the 15th Century. He was known as 'The Laird' and held the honorary position of High Sherriff of the county.
I would be interested in any information about earlier generations at Annaclare or about the Armagh Cousers. My mother's maiden name was Couser and her father was Herbert about whom I know nothing.
Hope this is of some interest.
Michael
Neither George or Thomas ever married.

IGI lists a daughter, born 27 Aug. 1872, to Henry Scott and Anne Eliza Croft.
Michael- welcome to Rootschat. Not sure if there's any connection here but Mary Couser (born c1843) m. James Heney and had: Anna Stuart, Minnie, Lavinia, Thomas, William Henry, John, James Thompson. I was told that the Cousers were French Huguenots and I believe the Heneys were also originally from Co. Armagh.

hi michael,
herbert couser married elizabeth adelaide scott 30-aug-1899
rostrevor church of ireland
parish of kilbroney
county down.
its a long way between annaclare and rostrevor but with the names involved it has to be the right people, unless i've read your post totally wrong!

Hi Tony
Thanks for that information. Couser is an uncommon name and the year 1899 would be just right.

Hi Toni and Madie,
Toni in your first message on 30 August you mention a John Scott at Carganamuck.
When I lived at Annaclare Tom Scott owned a tenanted property which I thought was Carnamuck but I never saw the name written down so it could be the same place.
I went there once. It was a wild boggy place of over 100 acres with lots of pigs, chooks and kids as I remember it.
I am enjoying this.
Cheers Michael

My cousin has recently confirmed the connection with my grandfather, Andrew Scott (b.1869), as the son of Henry Scott through a will which listed the same address where my Andrew was living in Dublin at the time (1899) It seems his mother was Anne Eliza Croft. My cousin also found a marriage cert. dated Jun 17, 1867, city of Armagh. Father's name; William, both listed as farmers. Anne's father was William Croft, also farmer. Here is where it gets foggy. We heard that our great grandfather, Henry, married a widow, with the same last name of Scott. So would that be Anne Eliza, or was it the widow of John Scott of Annaclare, who would be Elizabeth Scott? So perhaps there was a "blended family" of children. I wonder if John Scott and Henry Scott were related, and how. Brothers, cousins?

Hi,
Just to add to the information my grear grandmother was Martha Louisia Scott who married David Boyce approx 1896. She was also a daughter of Anne Eliza and I'm guessing Henry Scott. She died approx 1917 aged 48. Any more information would be appreciated. It would be great if the gentleman who lived in Annaclare House for a while could contact me. Also just out of interest the Annaclare House and 86 acres have just been placed for sale !

Hello! I am a little unsure I am understanding how this all works, but I will try again.
My grandfather, Andrew Scott b.1869 is the sibling to your great-grandmother, Martha Louisa Scott. I have seen the 1911 census but wasn't absolutely sure of the connection. I would love to know more about your side of the family. There seems to have been other siblings, but not sure of names etc. I have communicated with the woman who lives at Annaclare, she was not familiar with the Scotts, not being from Armagh. I do have some photos of the house sent to me by a cousin and a gentleman who spent several years there as a child during the air raids in London. His grandmother was Elizabeth Adelaide Scott/Couser.
I hope this is of interest to you, and if more info needed we can elaborate with a PM. Madie

Hi Michael
My Great Grandmother was a Couser from Cavanacaw Townland in Armagh. Herbert Couser married Elizabeth Adelaide Scott in 1899 in Rostrevor, County Down, however his family were from Killynure Townland in Armagh.
I'll send you a PM.
Best Regards
Jim
