Title: Crewkerne- COLMER/STOCKDALE
Post by: piggywig on Friday 28 January 05 00:54 GMT (UK)
Is anyone researching COLMER/STOCKDALE families in Crewkerne circa 1750-1800? I am trying to find out more about a farm called Lowere ???Severalls that was owned by a Hannah COLMER until1783 when it was willed to the STOCKDALE family.

Hello
I have a John COLMER who was born in Crewkerne.  I'm just waiting for confirmation that he was my 4xGr-Grandfather - have ordered marriage certificate of my 3xGr-Grandmother, Mary Ann Slade COLMER.  I tried a search for the name COLMER and came up with your old post.  Is COLMER from Crewkerne one of your lines?  If so, would love to hear from you.
Regards,
Kady

Just replied in response to John Churchill COLMER bellhanger posting and then saw this posting. It looks as if you come down through Sarah COLMER via John Slade COLMER and Martha WHEADON. How far have you gone back? Do you know about Robert Slade and Jane's brush with the law?

Hiya
I just replied to your posting under the bell hanger subject.  It's all so confusing - John Churchill COLMER and John Slade COLMER.  Which one was the bell hanger?  I was in contact with someone yesterday who has quite an extensive line of COLMERs in his web page - 238 to be exact.  Seems to think my Mary Ann was born in Crewkerne and was the daughter of John Slade COLMER (who doesn't appear to have any SLADE in his ancestors, which I thought was odd).  If your husband is descended from Frederick, does he have Mary Ann (Slade) COLMER in his family unit as a sister of Frederick?  It really does seem, now, that I should have waited until the marriage certificate is in my hands.  I do hope that it settles the issue once and for all!

Our COLMER line goes:
George Henry COLMER 1909-1996 & Rose NEWTON
Arthur (Decorator) 1871-1940 & Eliza Ann Tarlton WATERS
Frederick (Carpenter) 1835-1905 & Eliza WATERS
(Frederick had three sisters: Selina, Hannah and Louisa)
John Churchill (Bell Hanger) 1792-1870 & Eliza. BUCKLER
William 1769-1826 & Edith CHURCHILL

If you come through the line with Slade as a second christian name (and where some changed their surname to SLADE) then your line descends from John Churchill COLMER's sister Hannah COLMER who had an ilegit son John Slade COLMER (1792-1853) he had a son Robert Slade COLMER who married a Jane ALLEN who were sentenced to death for murder, subsequently commuted to life in prison for John, I think she was eventually released. It's a very long time ago since I read all the court reports and things. John died in prison here in Kent, Gravesend I think. I am in contact with his greatgranddaughter , who would be the person to fill you in on all the details. Robert Slade had six brothers and sisters, one of whom was Mary Ann Slade COLMER who was christened in 1822 and married a William OSBORNE. Is this your ancestor? If it is, then forget John Churchill the bell hanger as he isn't in your direct line. . I would really need to know details of the line you have traced back so far,  so that I can determine where you fit into the tree.
Regards
Fay

Thanks very much, Fay, for all the details.  I have been in touch with 2 other COLMER descendents who are also in touch with Joan HAWKSWORTH.  It seems a great line to find myself desceded from - lots of research done already!  Anyway, I am impatiently waiting for the marriage certificate and hope to have Mary Ann's Dad's Occupation to tell me once and for all which John Colmer is her dad.  Looks like all my conjecture has been incorrect so will soon know.  Thanks again for your info.  Will post again as soon as the marriage cert arrives!
Cheers,
Karen

Hi

I have just found these posts whilst researching my Colmer ancestors. I, too, am descended from John Churchill Colmer and share the same ancestry down to Frederick and Eliza Waters and from there via their daughter Elizabeth Ellen who married Albert John Daniels. I believe Elizabeth Ellen (b. 1872) was the next sibling born after Arthur.

I would love to make contact, and share information, with other Colmer descendants.

Susan

Do you know where the surname Stockdale originated? My wife's tree has a Benjamin Stockdale who married Ann Weselby at Tuxford Notts. 4th June 1775. He seems to have been beamed in from the Starship Enterprise!

It is possible that your Benjamin took on the surname of STOCKDALE for inheritance reasons. I have come across a COLMER who changed his surname for this reason - sometimes happened if there were no sons to carry on the family name.  ..............
(Having said that I also have a great-grandfather who changed his surname twice, probably to escape the then Military Police. I also have come across an illegit child changing the surname on the marriage of the Mother).
Did Benjamin leave a will? If he did, it could be worth looking to see what it said. Sorry I can't be more help.

Thanks for that Piggywig, by one of those strange coincidences a few days after I made the posting there was a Stockdale thread started which actually referred to my wife's ancestor in Nottinghamshire. I made contact, so far the respondent has made one visit to Retford sub Record Office, and taken the tree back a further generation with hopefully more to come. Will bear the will in mind as since he was a farmer he had something to leave.

 :)  Hello there,
I am a Colmer descendant too and wonder if you would like to visit my website where there are images & over 350 Colmer names including your ancestral branch.
Much of my information came from Joan Hawksworth, who I know would love to hear from you - especially if you have not yet had contact with her... Joan has been researching the COLMER Family for over 45 years!
The family website is secure, so you will need to request an invitation from me (Administrator) to gain access... instructions are here...

I can send you a Guest or Family invitation... Guests can browse the website, whereas Family visitors can edit their branches and add images too.
If you would like a Family invitation which is linked to a particular branch of the Colmer Tree, I will need details of your direct ancestors.
