Title: Enos Shepherd Cowham
Post by: calmar on Thursday 28 August 08 11:29 BST (UK)
Hi,

Can anyone please help with some details for the above man.

He was married in June qtr 1847 to either Jane Burman or Amelia Stockton. They had a son Joseph Ashlin Cowham born 1848, registered in Spilsby.

He married again in Sheffield in 1854 to Hannah Spooner.

I can't find him on 1951 in either Lincolnshire or Sheffield nor can I find a death of either of the two ladies.

His wife's name would be very helpful for me.

Kind regards,

Calmar

2 June 1847 Alford
Enos Shepperd COWHAM (son of Ashlin) to Amelia STOCKTON (dau of Joseph)

In the Spilsby spreadsheet, available here http://s10.freefronthost.com/mi/index.html

He may have just "left" ... Amelia was in Alford in 1851 with two sons.

However she was back in Alford in 1861 (widow) with a 3yo daughter born in Scarborough.

Perhaps she was the Amelia COWHAM buried at Louth 19 Aug 1862 aged "30".

His second marriage was to Harriot SPOONER.

Deaths Mar 1895
COWHAM    Harriet    63    Sheffield    9c   317

Thank you Geoff, that is interesting!! ;D

So may be we have a bigamous marriage to Harriett Spooner! As you say, he must just have 'left' without the benefit of a divorce.

I take it there is no sign of another 'marriage' for her afterwards when she had a daughter.

Kind regards

Yes, I think so!

Thank you for  all that info Geoff. I wonder if she ran off with another cordwainer. Enos's father was one too.

I haven't found a birth for Frances Amelia between 1857 and 1859. Nothing showing on FreeBMD either. Would the site for the marriages have links to the records of births also? Thanks for that link it was very good!

Kind regards,

Calmar

Ooh look   :o

Births Mar 1858
BROWN    Frances Amelia         Scarbro'    9d   273

I can't see her in Yorks in 1861.

The "Site for Marriages" is only for Lincs.

Geoff, you are a magician! Thanks very much for that interesting piece of info. No wonder I couldn't find the little darling. ;D

No, in 1861 I have found her in service in Lincolnshire, can't remember where off the top of my head. At least I think it is her. Nothing else matches. ;)

Kind regards,

I'm not sure who you're talking about now ... I was on about finding a Frances Amelia BROWN.  As I said, Amelia COWHAM was binding shoes in Louth.

I guess the young un was (in 1871) ...

30 Lee St, Louth
Would ELVIN 82 Retired Dairyman, Baumber
Mary 73 Louth
William B JEFFRIES (lodger) 24 Upholsterer, Bucks
Selina TOPLISS 13 Dom Serv, Friskney
Amelia COWHAM (boarder) 12 Louth

:-[ I should have  said 1871. The daughter is living as Amelia Cowham, at 30 Lee Street, Louth. Listed as a Boarder/Scholar. The head is retired dairyman.

Amelia Brown in 1871 is a Servant in Spalding.

Thanks

... then she seems to disappear. ???

Unless ...

Marriages Sep 1878
BROWN    Amelia        Louth    7a   937
ROLLINGS    William         Louth    7a   937

but 1881 has her birthplace as Grainthorpe.

Birthplace in Scarborough, as on 1861 then in 1871 it is Louth! Confusing or ignorant of facts I think.

Just seen your listing for 1871 and that is the one I had seen too.

I think I will leave her married to William Rollings for now. but thanks once again for your all help with this Geoff. I appreciate it.

Kind regards,
Calmar

More confusion Geoff!  I wonder why she said her daughter had been born in Scarborough on census?

Thank you.

Remember that we only stumbled on the name BROWN from that birth I found in Scarborough.  If that wasn't the right Frances Amelia, there's no reason to think about BROWNs at all.

Ok Geoff, I will stick with Cowham for now.

Thanks again.

Hello,
I have found an Frances Amelia Cowham married William Smith in 1881 Campbelltown NSW. She has at least 6 children and dies in 1940 Goulburn NSW with her father unknown  Cowham and her mother Frances Amelia. Is this any help? She may have come to Australia via South Australia but I have not verified this yet.
