Within our family tree I have found a marriage between Elizabteh J Fagan and Renzo A L Tognarelli in 1942. She is deffinitley from Workington and I think he was too. The marriage appears to have taken place down in Oxford. There is a Tognarelli family in Whitehaven on the 1901 Census consisting of 3 brothers and their cousin Celestion. Celestino married in Barrow and then moved to Ulverston. The other brothers were Ferrucio, Filippo and Giovanne. If anyone has any information it would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if you know about this - under the heading Cafes, Snack Bars and Tea Rooms,
H & R Tognarelli Ltd
46 Pow Street, Workington, Cumbria, CA14 3AG
01900 602317
so there is still a TOGNARELLI presence in Workington.

Don't know the family personally but I am from the area and know the cafe - it was really good. I think they used to make their own ice cream (if my memory serves me well).
I'll ask around and see if anyone knows what happened to the family.
I'll keep you posted.

Thank you for helping out. Every bit helps!!!!!!! I had seen the Cafe when I conducted a generic search but couldn't get much info other than it was there and that there had been this large ice cream empire!!
If you are local, - well local knowledge can alwasy be such a bonus!

Claire,
I was talking to Peter Toggnarelli in Cockermouth, this morning, can you tell me why you want contact with the family. Then I can get a phone number to you.
Jeff.

I have been conducting family research down the Fagan line, who came to Workington from Ireland. I am now looking at the wider branches of the tree which include the marriage of Elizabeth J Fagan, to Renzo AL Tognarelli in 1942. Elizabeth would be second cousin, I think to our family and I am simply trying to piece together the history of the families, and to establish if Renzo fits in with the Tognarelli family that I have found living in Whitehaven in 1901. Any info to piece together the puzzle is greatfully received.
Thank you

Hi Claire
I have asked people at work if they know the family which several people do. I see that in the meantime you have a good contact who can help so I will leave it up to them.
Hope the research goes well

Thanks for thinking of me anyway! The contact has beeen great. I can now confirm that Elizabeth married into the family I found in Whitehaven, and the gentleman I spoke to was able to add a feww more pieces of the puzzle. It is so rewarding when you get that kind of response, makes all the fruitless hours of internet search spring to life!!
Thanks to Jeff too. It was very good of you to get the contact for me.
Claire :)

The Tognarelli's bought the shop on Pow Street from ancestors of mine in the Topping family. I have a photo of the shop on Pow Street when it was owned by the Toppings if anyone is interested pm me.
If anyone looking has any information on the Topping family I would be very interested. In particular if any Tognarelli's can tell me who actually owned the shop that would be interesting. My gg grandfather Newall and his wife Eleanor lived and worked in the shop but it may have been Newall's brother John (who emigrated to Argentina) that owned properties in Workington.
Thanks

Non faccio parte della famiglia Tognarelli ma abito nella casa che Renzo Al Tognarelli aveva costruito in Italia (Toscana - Barga) chiamandola "Villino Germana" in ricordo della madre emigrata ai primi del '900.
