If anyone has the parish records for Stanhope I would be very grateful if you could check for a Jacob Hodgson born around 1816. I have his marriage certificate and his father was Edward Hodgson, a lead miner. In the Census data he consistently gives Stanhope as a place of birth and an age that works out at about 1816. Unfortunately the IGI for Stanhope seems to stop in 1812.
Many thanks in advance

Have a look on BT site in Family search pilot site, stanhope Baptisms around 1816 start on page 433.

Thanks for the tip. I've heard that mentioned before but never worked out exactly what it was - what a fantastic resource! Unfortunately no sign of him yet in 1814-1816 but I will try some more...
Thanks again

No Jacob Hodgson in my index of baptisms 1813-1837. No other children of a Edward Hodgson either.

Many thanks for checking Janis that's very kind of you.
I think it's quite likely that he might have been in St John's Chapel Stanhope. Their records are mixed in with the main Stanhope records on those BT transcripts until about 1812. I've found a couple of children to Edward Hodgson (a miner) and Mary there. Frustratingly they then stop being mixed about 1812 and although the site lists St John's separately those images are currently 'unavailable'. I'm not sure whether that means unavailable today or unavailable forever! You wouldn't happen to have the Chapel records too would you?
Many thanks again for your help.

I have St John Chapel up to 1812. They are not indexed so if you know a date that would be helpful.

Hi Janis,
Many thanks for the offer. Unfortunately the date is probably 1815/1816 so too late! I seem destined never to know the answer to this one!
Many thanks again

Go to the St. John record in the Stanhope parish and type in 100. It is only the first pages that are unavailable. Page 100 is around 1817--you will have to go back and forth from there. Okay I found it--type in 53 in the 1771-1840 St John record 28 Dec 1815 White Walls

Thanks! Doh, I would have carried on going back to the site not realising that for months!
I have a very likely record - baptised 28th Dec 1815 to Edward (a miner) and Mary Hodgson. It fits all of the information that I have on him and I can't see any other likely contenders... so I am 90% sure it is him.
Many many thanks for your help
