I've been looking for where my late grandad was born. On his Birth Cert it says 99 Newtown Road. I contacted Reading Library to see if they could look it up on the electoral reg for me from 1920 - 1925.
I got a reply today saying that NewTown Road does Exist, but only Place Names, Not house numbers.
This is really strange and I don't know where to go from here.
I know newburychap told me that it could be another way of saying he was born in the workhouse.
But I wanted to dig a little deeper and see if the house did exist.
From what Reading have told me then, is it likely that the address is real or is it ficticious?
-
Hello,
According to the 1929 Kelly's Directory for Newbury, 99 Newtown Road does not exist but it does exist in 1973. Perhaps new houses were built.
Do you know the name of the people occupying 99 Newtown Road?
Regards, Berkslass
-
Well my grandad who was born there, his surname was powell. His mother was powell and her maiden name is seymour.
Was there anyone named kempster living there at all?
-
Hi,
In 1891 in New Road is a William Seymour age 70 b Basildon, Berkshire, occ garden lab
and his wife Mary Ann age 67 b Mongewell, Oxfordshire. They also have 2 lodgers with them.
RG12 / 990 / 20 / 10 Address New Road, Pangbourne.
Could this be your family?
Sue :)
-
I don't think so.
Is that at 99 newtown road?
-
Hello,
There is nothing listed in Newtown Road for Powell, Seymour or Kempster in 1929.
There is a George Seymour living at 68 Camp Close which was a road off Newtown Road.
Charles Thos Seymour living a 4 Greenham Road (not far from Newtown Road).
Jn Seymour living at 34 Victoria Street.
Herbt. Wm. Powell living at 72 Russell Rod
Jas. Thos. Powell living at 1 Newport Road
Mrs Powell living at 75 Gloucester Road.
There is nothing listed for Kempster in 1929.

Hmm I suppose my family could have moved away by 1929.
Do you possibly have any entries for 2 Nursery Cottages in Speen?
-
No Sorry, only 4 Nursery Cottages which was occupied by Silas Coster.

1929 Kelly's? Didn't realise they were doing Newbury directories that far back.

There is a place called Newtown just outside Newbury on the A339. If you look at Multimap the A339 runs straight out of Newbury to Newtown before bending off to the east. Could this have been a road to Newtown that was called Newtown Road or even the road was really callled something else but known as 'the Newtown Road' years ago and has disappeared under the dual carriage way.
Just a thought.

My Husband bought it from the Secondhand Bookshop in Newbury a while ago. When new it cost 2/6 net.
Would you like any lookups?

Hmm Maybe.
Am I right in thinking that there is an "Old Newtown Road" in Newbury?
I tried to look up when Newtown road was opened. It opened in 1852 or sumthing like that.
So I wondered, if it was open then, why isn't 99 newtown road in existence in 1924??
Strange.

There are quite a few gaps and I am not sure whether this is due to people not wishing their names put in the Directory or to other reasons. West Berks Library might have a map of the area for that time.
As you see, there are two entrances to Old Newtown Road. I cannot find the names you are looking for in Old Newtown Road.
Do you know where your Grandfather was Baptised as the Baptism Register might have the address of where his parents were living.
Newbury Library has the Parish Records for St Nicholas Church but not for St John's Church. Berkshire Records Office have both St Nicholas and St John's.

I have just sent an email to newbury library, requesting someone to look up the church records for me.
That is so strange why there is a big gap in the directory for Newtown Road. It's almost like hardly anyone lived there!
My grandfathers Mother lived in Speen at the time of his birth.
I don't know how long she stayed in speen, because all her family came from welford and boxford in newbury.
I'll let you know if and when I get a reply from newbury library.

The gaps indicate empty plots - the southern end (south of St John's Road & Andover Road) was sparsely populated. The directories list ALL the houses, there was no suggestion of paying to be in it and hence people being missed. No 99 did not exist in 1924.
Looking at No 99 (http://maps.live.com) it looks like a 1950s build (I would need to go through the directories to be sure). Its the one to the north of Grove Court (built on the site of the Rokeby Arms) with the new bungalow built in its back garden. The plots obviously didn't turn out the way they envisioned - I suspect that bigger, higher prestige houses were built than anticipated. So the Rokeby, originally 143, ended up as 101. Nowadays the plots are being split and houses built in gardens, perhaps we will eventually end up with the number of plots they orginally contemplated.

Very kind of you to offer. I am currently compiling a database of Newbury pubs - and hence am interested in all their directory entries, However, it is a bit much to ask you to look them all up. If it is okay I will put together the list from 1928 (Blacket's directory) for you to modify (there will be a few changes of landlord, perhaps a pub name change).
-
Hello Newburychap,
Look forward to hearing from you.
-
So it really does look like the address doesn't exist. That is dissapointing. I guess I'll never know for sure now where he was born.

The formatting is dodgy - I can't see how to set tabs in this message editor. If you cut and paste the listing lines from here into Excel or similar and it should sort itself out.
Don't worry if you can't find the Tiger or Weaver's Arms - they closed down at about this time, their last entries would be in 1928 or 1929. Any changes, notably of landlord, are of interest.

I've been looking for where my late grandad was born. On his Birth Cert it says 99 Newtown Road.
Came across a reference to 99 Newtown Road today - in Vera Garlick's The Newbury Scrapbook. p54. She gives it as the address of the workhouse ...
-
99 newtown road, Does exist, live 6 doors down from it.
20/11/2003 £472,500 Det. F No Map 99, Newtown Road, Newbury, West Berkshire, RG14 7DD
Sadley though it is a reletively new house built within last 20 years.
The original 99 newtown road, was infact part of the workhouse, and none of this is left.

Hi Newbury Chap,
I have just seen your post about Newbury Pubs and I can't think why I missed it. I will look up the Pubs in Kelly's and get back to you .

Information on the workhouse here:-
http://www.workhouses.org.uk/index.html?Newbury/Newbury.shtml
-
On the 1928 Blacket's Pub directory, at the Globe Inn Newbury a C Taylor was identified, is any information available about when he arrived at this Inn and how long the family remained. Could be a distant relative.
Thanks
Newburykeith
-
From directories: Charles Taylor was at the Globe from 1915 to 1928. He was not there in 1913 or 1930.
Which is as close as I can get at present. I am still collecting data and will, eventually be able to put dates to his being granted the license and when his replacement takes over.
The Globe is now the Snooty Fox.
-
Thankyou for that information, the information that I have is that the C stands for Charles Taylor, who could be a great-grandfather long deceased, I don't know even a rough date of birth or a estimate of his age or any other family names of individuals that lived in the Globe at that time, I would hate to have to wait until the 1921 census becomes available!
Thanks Newburykeith

101 Newbury Rd was the address of the Rokeby Arms - we were landlords there 1972-3

I think we are back where this thread began.
99 Newtown Road was the address given for births in the Newbury Union Workhouse until the street was renumbered in (I think) 1924. The Workhouse eventually became Sandleford Hospital.

I believe that 99 Newtown Road was the address of the Newbury Union Workhouse.
93 people buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery had the address of 99 Newtown Road.
