Hi
I am trying to find the families of Ethel Roberts born 1918 and Freda Roberts born 1925. Both were born in the Manchester area but moved to Glasgow in the late 1930's/early 1940's. They were the daughters of Joseph and Bertha Roberts who had both died by 1933. Any help to find them would be greatly appreciated. The BMD index seems to cover England and Wales only. Does Scotland have anything similar? Many Thanks.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat
www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk is the website you want but it is a paysite. Also - they only have marriages up to 1932 so it will not be any use to you in that respect
-
Hi Thanks for your reply. I have looked at Scotlands People and may well have to register with them. In the meantime maybe someone reading this posting will be able to help me. Ethel and Freda are my Father's Sisters and came from a family of 9 children (their families may not be aware of this). Over the last 7 years I have traced the siblings of the other children which has been wonderful. Hopefully one day I will find Ethel and Freda. Kind Regards.

Did Freda have a middle name?
-
Hi Thanks for your reply. I haven't got a copy of her birth certificate but I am not aware of a middle name. Their Mother's maiden name was Eaves sometimes spelt Eves.
-
There's no middle name in Freda's birth registration:
Jun 1925
Freda ROBERTS mother's maiden name EVES Manchester S. 8d 349
Anna :)

On www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, it shows
Surname:Roberts
Forename:Ethel
Mothers Maiden Name: Eaves
Birth year: 1918 +/- 1 year
County: Lanark
died in 1998. If she's yours, I'm sorry. But best way to check is to spend £6 and buy the death cert. (I would have looked for you but don't have any credits left)
Can't find Freda though.

Many Thanks everyone for taking the time to help me. I never expected to get so many replies in such a short space of time. The Ethel who passed away in 1998 may well be the one I am looking for. I have a note that she was born October, November or December 1918 so I unless anything else comes to light I will apply for a copy of the death certificate. Kind Regards.

Hi Again I have just rung the Register Office in Scotland and it will cost £13 for a copy of a Death Certificate. However the Certificate will include information such as DOB the home address etc which may help me find Freda. I am guessing that the information on Scotland's people is just basic albeit very helpful to me so far - Thank You. If Freda married in Scotland then I am not sure how I would find her
Any help or guidance will be appreciated. Kind Regards.

The basic information is shown on Scotland’s People (see my previous post). Sorry about mentioning the £10 – forgot that Ethel died after 1957.
Had Ethel died pre 1957, you could have seen the actual image of her death cert and there is so much more info on a Scottish BMD than those of England.
The Scottish death cert will show:
both her maiden and married name,
if married it will show her husband’s name, or “widow of”,
when and where she died, including the time of death,
her age,
her usual residence,
parents names, including her mother’s maiden, if known by the informant, and if parents were deceased,
her father’s occupation,
her cause of death,
the informant and the informants qualification/relationship to her (son/daughter/neighbour etc) as well as perhaps their address.
You might be lucky and find that the informant’s details give you a clue as to where to search next.
So well worth the £13.
PS I wish the English certs would show half as much info!!

Hi I have applied for a copy of Ethel's Death Certificate. Hopefully the contents may lead me to Freda. Thanks for your help. What a wonderful site!
-
Please let us know when you get it - I DO like a happy ending!!
Once we've found Ethel, maybe we can find Freda!!

Closest record on SP is this death
2000 ROBERTS OLGA FREDA aged 76 at DUNOON ARGYLL AND BUTE
-
Thanks for your replies. I am now fairly confident that Freda must have got married in Scotland. In addition to getting Ethel's Death Certificate I have also paid for a 10 year marriage search to be done on Freda. Thanks to this website I have made an enormous amount of progress in less than 5 days. Kind Regards.

Hi Here is an update. Today I have received a copy of ETHEL'S death certificate and it is the person I am looking for. ETHEL was married to DONALD BROWN ADAM and lived at 1448 Gallowgate, Glasgow G31 4ST. Donald registered her death. I understand that a DONALD BROWN ADAM passed away during 2003 - maybe this could be him. A 10 year marriage search on FREDA up until 1950 has not produced any results. Maybe she is the person who passed away in Dunoon in 2000.
I will continue my search.
In the meantime if anyone is aware of any photographs of Gallowgate on the Internet I would be pleased to hear from them.
Many Thanks for your help.

Hi
I should have mentioned in my previous posting that Ethel ADAM (nee ROBERTS) died 4 August 1998.
It has been suggested to me that a death announcement could have been made in The Glasgow Evening Times. If anyone reading this is visiting the Mitchell Library in Glasgow in the near future and could look this up for me, and let me have the details, I would be very grateful.
Thank you for your time.

Hi I am delighted to tell you all that thanks to this site and the many people who took time to do look ups for me etc I am now in touch with both Ethel's and Freda's families.
A big Thank You to you all!
