Hello Alison. Sorry this one got overlooked.
The gravestone is in poor condition caused by it being under a tree and having lead lined letter.
Here is what can be read and I am afraid it is not a lot.

In loving memory of a dear wife and mother Dorothy Esther? Featherstone, December/28/1943 aged 57 years.

Post by: fruitlady on Tuesday 18 November 08 23:03 GMT (UK)
Adam,
I haven't really started in depth searching on the Stephenson line but when I saw your post I recognized Hamsterley.  I have some hand written pages that someone copied out of a Stephenson Family Bible over 30 years ago.  None of the entries seem to go together but I know my great, great grandmother is in there as well as others.  There are some baptism entries for Hamsterley 1761, 1777 of people that live in Crownest, Redford Grove, or Redford.  When one of them died in 1843 there is no internment reference.  There is one record for a Thomas who died in 1848 that says interred at the Baptisit Chapel Hamsterley.  Most of the deaths that have no internment records are dated from 1830-1858.  There is a Jane who died April 13, 1823.  I can go through and list everyone by name and date if that would help.

Hi Adam

I wonder if you could give me the listings for Atkinson pre 1800. I also noted you had Parkin and Watson names down, I have quite a few of them pre 1800 but quite understand that it is time consuming finding all those. So would be happy with whatever you are able to give me.

Many thanks

If the Atkinson you have is a John, Elizabeth or Margaret then 1839 might fit.

Title: Re: Monumental Inscriptions for Hamsterley
Post by: Adamand on Saturday 14 February 09 19:05 GMT (UK)
Hello Joanna. Here are some interesting inscriptions:-

Contiguous to this stone the remains of Michael Parkin, late of Softly, who resigned this life in hope of blessed resurrection through Christ on the 3rd day of June 1752 aged 62 years.
Likewise his widow Alice Parkin, daughter of Cuthbert and Alice Johnson, late of Crane Row, who resigned this life November the 18th 1776 aged 82 years.
Likewise Christopher Parkin late of Softly, son of the above Michael and Alice Parkin, who resigned this life August the 4th 1807 aged 81 years.
(there is an Elizabeth, wife of Christopher Parkin but the rest is unreadable
This is usually the case when the inscription goes down to the ground level)

Here lieth in hope and blessed resurrection through Christ the body of John Watson of Cold Sides, who departed this life on the 31st day of March 1787 in the 66 year of his age.

Here lies deposited in hope and resurrection through Christ, the remains of John Watson, late of New Hall in this parish, He departed this life on the 10th October 1797 in the 55th year of his life.

There are more stones dating the early 1800's and one in particular caught my attention. It was for the grand daughter of Christopher Parkin and at the top of the stone it's got the heading (Allah Kerim the providence of God is great)  I believe these are the final words spoken to a Muslim?

Many Thanks Chris

Post by: Adamand on Friday 22 January 10 14:39 GMT (UK)

Hello Chris. here is the one inscription for Bell at Hamsterley:-

Elisabeth, daughter of John and Margaret Bell of Rowntree, died July/6/1779 aged 13 years.
Also to the memory of the above Margaret Bell, the wife of John Bell, who departed This life 3rd day of May 1786 in her 64th year of age.
Also of the above John Bell, her husband , who departed This life on the 26th day of December 1811 in the 80th year of his age.
Also of Elizabeth, second wife of the above John Bell, died 18/October/1823? unable to read after that.

This is another gravestone where the bottom part of the stone is affected by lichen and someone has scraped away the lichen, therefore making it unreadable.

Hello Jacqueline. This was an easy one. Nice and clear and easy to read:-

In loving memory of my dear parents, Hannah Charlton, born 18/July/1850, died 26/February/1941
And John Charlton, born 18/December/1853, died 31/August/1943.

Adam

Adam,

I have just found this thread and thought i would let you know (in case you want to make a note on your records) that the stone for Hannah Charlton has two wrong dates on it.  I know what you have recorded is what is actually written on the stone.

She was actually born on 18 July 1851 and died on 26 February 1942 - I have the certificates that confirm the dates as Hannah and John were my great great grandparents

Hello David. I appreciate your reply but the inscriptions that I post are "just that" Inscriptions.
I will not change the inscription and would not repeat the inscription anyway once that I have posted it.
I had so may people asking for inscriptions that have already been posted that I now keep a list of all the postings that I make.
If anyone requests an inscription for Charlton at Hamsterley I would just answer by saying
"already posted on post number 48 and 61."
Strange though how the dates are a year out on the Birth and Death.

Thanks Adam,

I appreciate you have just transcribed what is there, just thought I would mention it so if anyone else sees it they don't get the runaround that i did when I first tried to sort them out.

I've never been able to make my mind up why the dates are wrong on the stone ie did their daughter mix them up or did the stone mason get it wrong. Still I guess it doesn't matter now.

I appreciate the time you took to do the transcriptions as I am sure many others do to.

Title: Re: Monumental Inscriptions for Hamsterley

I think at least some of them could be Catholic, my grandfather was George Harle Reed, and a rosary was found amongst his possessions when he died although he was not a practising Catholic.

The Harle comes from his grandmother who was Jane Sarah Harle.   I seem to have uncovered a family mystery as Jane Sarah was first married to Robert Norwood and they had three children although on all of the census she seems to be living with her parents and the children, Robert Norwood disappears after the 1861 census and then Jane Sarah pops up on the 1881 Census now apparently married to George Reed, my Great Great Grandfather, despite the fact that I have been unable to find a marriage entry for Sarah Jane and George, nor a death entry for Robert Norwood!

Hello David. Here are three gravestone inscriptions that may be interesting. There are another two gravestones but they are from the 1950 and I do not think they would fit in to your request although the deaths are in 1952 and ages would be late 70''s.

To the sacred memory of Michael Raine, son of William and Ann Raine, formerly of South Side, who departed this life 1/April/1836 aged 76 years.
Also William Raine, son of the above named Michael and Alice Raine, who departed this life 22/September/1852 aged 60 years.
Likewise Mary Raine, wife of the above William Raine, who departed this life 29/June/1875 aged 82 years.
Also John Raine, son of the above named Michael Raine, who departed this life 12/August/1865 aged 66 years.

This stone is inscribed to the memory of William Raine, late of South Side, died 17/November/1789 aged 78 years.
Also Ann his wife, who died 7/March/1799 aged 80 years.
Also Alice Raine, wife of Michael Raine, son of the above named who departed this life 14/December/1799 aged 35 years.
Also Mary Raine, departed this life 23/September/1804 aged 9 years.
Also Ann Raine, departed this life 27/September/1809 aged 22 years.

In memory of Jane, wife of George Raine of East Mayling, who died 12/November/18?? aged 51 years.
Also Ann Raine of Backwood Hill, who died 18/January/1883 aged 92 years.
Also George, son of John Raine, who died 22December/1883 aged 9 years.
Also the above George Raine, who died 15/January/1912 aged 83 years..

I have already posted Raine inscriptions for Crook, Brancepeth and Muggleswick in case you are interested.

I don't have any of these in my tree but I also can't rule any of them out without more evidence.
I haven't seen any links with Crook, Brancepeth & Muggleswick. Do you know if there is a grave yard at Bedburn? The Raine's I have found so far seem to have stayed around Hamsterley, Bedburn and Lynesack & Softly (though I noticed that you have found no Raine's at Lynesack).
Thanks

Would like to thank you too for posting this information (found it whilst googling). Josiah and Magdalen(e) (nee Hence/Hench) are my 4G grandparents, and I know very little about them apart from Magdalene's christening, their marriage, and their children (all from the IGI). Now know a little more! Must try and visit the churchyard next time I am 'up north'.

Hallo Adam!

Could I trouble you for the Dent and Dunn inscriptions please.  The period I am most interested in is the 18th century to about 1860.  I hope there are not too many.

Many thanks,

Title: Re: Monumental Inscriptions for Hamsterley

Hello Hazel. Here they are:-

Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth, wife of Robert Dunn of Middleston, Co Durham, who departed this life 5/March/1825 aged 22 years.

This next one is in poor condition and unable to read the age. It is later than the date you mentioned but I thought it may be as easy to post because it may be of interest to others researching the Dunn name.
In loving memory of Robert Dunn, entered in to rest 18/January/1894 5? years.

This next one for Dent is included because of the same reason as above:-

In loving memory of William, the beloved  husband of Sarah Ann Dent of Ravensford farm, Hamsterley, who died 26/June/1915 aged 70 years.
Also Mary Ann, daughter of the above, who died at Kays lea 4/March/1893 aged 19 years.
Also George, son of the above, who died at Howden le Wear 18/May/1914 age 33 years.
Also the above Sarah Ann Dent, who died 24/October/1918 aged 66 years.

I'd be very grateful for the Hamsterley MIs for Gill - particularly the 18 th cent. but early 19th would be useful too.  Thanks very much.

Regards

Hello Cathy. Here is the only one that is a burial for the early 1800's although there are some others from the mid to late 1800's of deaths with ages of 80's and 90's.
There is also an interesting gravestone at Witton le Wear from 1837 with an age of 71 years.

Here is the Hamsterley one:-

In memory of Elizabeth, daughter of Anthony and Elizabeth Gill of Crane Beck Row, who died 17/June/1800 aged 16 years.
Also of Richard their son, who died 7/September/1809 aged 17 years.
Likewise of Anthony Gill father of the above named, who died 22/November/1814 aged 57 years.
Likewise to the memory of Anthony, son of the aforesaid Anthony and Elizabeth Gill, who died 16/December/1819 aged 31 years.
Also of Elizabeth Gill, widow of the aforesaid  Anthony Gill and mother to the above, who died 29/August/1838 aged 89 years.
Likewise of John Gill, brother of the above Anthony, who died 16/August/1842 aged 63 years.

Hello Adam

Thanks very much for your prompt reply.  If it wouldn't be too much trouble I would like to have the later Gill MIs and the Witton-le-Wear one too.  I am trying to get a line on the family of my ggg grandfather, Thomas Gill, born 1791, according to the 1851 and 1861 censuses at Wolsingham.  I wondered if he could be connected with the Hamsterley Gills.

Thanks once again

Regards

Hello Cathy. If you want the Witton le Wear inscription just post the request on the Witton le Wear thread.
That way there is no confusion because I do not do cross postings. I have posted inscriptions for 23 graveyards/cemeteries.
I can tell you that there are no inscriptions for Gill at Wolsingham other than 20th cen stones.
I will sort out the late 19th cen inscriptions for Hamsterley and post the here later

Thank you once again for your time.
