Post by: crystal-tips on Sunday 11 April 04 23:42 BST (UK)
I am researching the Dickinson family, initially from Spofforth & Plumpton in W.R. Yorkshire the family then moved to Stockton, Thornaby, Ampleforth, Malton. Would like to hear from anybody with links to this family.

Hello Crystal-tips,

What years does your research cover for these areas ???

My research starts with Robert Dickinson 1745-1820 and his wife Hellen/Helena/Elen Cass.

Robert & Hellen were married on 4th September 1770 in Spofforth, West Riding of Yorkshire. They are recorded as being the parents of Anthony, Anna, Barbara and Mary in the R.C. register for the Spofforth/Follifoot area.

Those four children all married but my main lines of research are from Anthony born 1773 and Barbara born 1776. Barbara married a Leconby, the majority of the next generations remaining in W.R. Yorks.

My line is via Anthony (1773) who had 8 children all born in Plumpton. It is one of the children of Anthony that moved to Ampleforth in the 1820's. Another of Anthony (born 1773) descendants, Thomas Dickinson (born 1837 Plumpton) moved  to Thornaby  & Stockton in the 1860's. He married twice and had 13  :o children  :o between 1862 & 1900.

Other family off shoots spread around Yorkshire and the North East, too many to go into great detail here.

Hi Jo
Is it the Perkins or Dickinson line that was born in Malton. I was born there too and have quite a lot of links & contacts still.  ;D

I'm going there on Thursday so if you let me have Malton details you require & I may be able to do you some look-ups or help.

Regarding the Dickinsons I could do with a few more details. I've private messaged you also

:) Hi I have no obvious immediate link to your Mary Elizabeth - however please let me have some more names and details as I have some brothers and sisters without many details so there could be a link somewhere. Also where did your Dickinsons live? Have you found any of them on any censuses?
regards
Jo

Searching for connections to my DICKINSONs.

Benjamin DICKINSON was born abt 1852 in Potternewton, Leeds. His father's name was John. Benjamin married Jane MORTON abt Sept.1873 in Leeds. Jane was born abt. 1855 in Wragthorne, Leeds.

Benjamin and Jane had 7 known children - Mary Ann (b.1874), Annie (b.1876), Florence (b.1878), James Arthur (b.1881), Herbert (b.1886), Ethel (b.1888) and Alfred (b.1894). Alfred was my great grandfather.

Has anyone any links? ???

HI JO
I am sorry but unfortunatly i dont have to many details. i know that she married walter cliffe in leeds in 1911 and had her daughter  florance in 1914 she may also have had a son arthur. i can not remmeber when she died but i think it was definatley after 1958 as she used to look after me when i was small. i am not sure where they lived but i know that walter lived in cottingley when he died i also know that at some time they lived in "chambers" which i think may have been to do with a bank in the city centre of leeds. i also know that walter had some dealings with leeds city council and i belive he lent them money. just a family story. or is it

Hi there is a Mary Elizabeth Dickinson born in Leeds in 1890 showing on FreeBMD - that would make her 21 so it is a possibility. Do you have a copy of her marriage certificate to Walter? That way you can find her fathers name - then look at the 1901 census to see if you can find more. Good luck.  :)

Hi Crystal Tips

I've only just come across your post - not bad, 7 years to find it. ::)

I have a couple of Dickensons from Plumpton (I think the 'e' and 'i' was often interchangeable), if you're still around I wonder if they link to your family?  Details are:

George Dickenson (Shoe maker) born about 1808 in Plumpton, by 1851 was living in Coombe Down, Bath

Joseph Dickenson (Carpenter) born about 1809 in Plumpton, by 1851 was living in Coombe Down, Bath

At the moment I think they may have been brothers, do the names mean anything to you?

Regards
Chris

Hi Dawn

I've just rechecked my records for Joseph, he does show a DOB as 1812 on both the 1851 & 1861 census.  Seems like we have a match, for which I thank you.  Joseph is on my line (my mother was a Dickenson) but as I've not been able to find much on line regarding parish records pre 1837, a visit to the records office was on my long term "to do" list.

Any details you can supply on the family would be greatly appreciated, are you interested in the information I have on Joseph and George?

Regards
Chris
