Title: On the Road to Nunney?
Post by: Fue on Tuesday 19 August 08 17:03 BST (UK)
Hi

Does anyone know which road into Nunney used to be called "Road To Nunney"?

I know there was a "Road to Frome" which looks obvious but there are I think about four other roads in, would this saying apply to all?

I live just outside of Nunney and the 'road to Nunney' varies depending on how one is currently situated compared to Nunney, I would guess that the same has always been the case.

Hi lucretia

You are very lucky to live in such a lovely area :)

The term "Road To Nunney" was actually used on Census returns so I thought it was a bona fide name, obviously not.  I have done a little more research now and my ancestors actually lived in Cloford not Nunney as I had previously been told.  So I can only presume that the road from Cloford was the road to Nunney.

As you live so close to Nunney, maybe you can answer another question.  Having looked at Cloford on Internet maps, it looks like there is only one or two farm buildings.  Is this correct or is Cloford still a village?

Hello,

I have found some very similar names for places on census returns, I suppose some places may simply not have had official names?

Cloford is very small, I'm not sure that it would count as a village proper - I do believe there are still residential houses there though. I have just asked the other two locals who are sat in my living room and they agree - Cloford isn't on any throughroad though so you wouldn't really know much of it unless you went there for some purpose!

Best wishes!

On http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/freefun/didyouknow/ Cloford is described as a village
Your search for Cloford found these locations...

1. Cloford Somerset (Village)
2. Cloford Common Somerset (Village)
3. Cloford Common (Point of Interest)
4. Cloford Manor Somerset (Other feature)

Thanks lucretia  for that bit of feedback, obviously there are less buildings there now than in the past.

Also thanks Stan for the ordnance survey map website .
This is a great tool I did not realise existed and it does answer quite a few of my queries. It shows a few more buildings than on google and more importantly, it shows the presence of a church.  Things are now a lot clearer. :)

Wow, how clever is that  :o
Thanks Stan, that is an even more useful tool and I have saved it as a favourite but, can the ordnance survey map be matched with a map of the 1800s?  that would be just what I could do with  ;D

Well I dont think it can but if you don't ask!  ::)

Hi Sue,
If you go to http://www.somerset.gov.uk/archives/ and click on "Maps and Postcards" then "Maps" you can select either the first or second edition of the O.S. 6 inch maps. Select from the gazetteer of place names for Cloford.

Is there no limit to your knowledge on maps :D

Many thanks again Stan, interestingly, it shows not many houses on the old map of Cloford so it must have always been a small village.

Hi,

If you go to www.gomezsmart.myzen.co.uk  you will find it is the site for the Hundred of Frome, which both Nunney and cloford are part of. You can also join via this site the companion site where there are loads of transcripts and other info. I know bthat there are several people on site with a keen interest in Nunney and Cloford. The companion site (yahoo) has some lovely photos of Cloford church, about 20 of them!

Sue,

Did you join the Yahoo group? That's where most of the transcripts are. It's a bind having to join but worth it. On the left of the home page of Yahoo group, click on FILES then click on whichever you want to look at. I know that under the heading of Frome Hundred there are transcripts for all the different villages. Peter is transcribing the early ones for Nunney at present and I believe from what he has said that they are a nightmare! I found a really early ancestor on it Jeffrey Coomb. Lovely.

all the best

Hi Maureen

Yes I did join the Yahoo groupa while back .  We are lucky that so much work has been done in and around Nunney, dont you think?  But as I say, I now need to do some digging to find out any new info and thanks for the directions, it certainly helps and save a lot of time.

All the best
Sue
