Hi Karlene we know that in 1871 James was age 52, Elizabeth age 50, James age 31, Jane age 23, Thomas age 18, Richard age 16, Charles age 14, John age 13, we also know that James born 1820 was an engineer, and that  Thomas, Richard, Chalres and John were Puddlers

Well that would make the family in 1861 a real possibility  then, given the ages of the children... Thomas is 9, Richard is 7, Charles is 5, and John is 3.

Same for the 1851 with a Jane aged 3 ( born about 1848 ) and James aged 11 ( born about 1841 ).

John may well have gone to Australia first then onto NZ.  Lots of people did that.... I have several in my tree.  Makes it difficult to trace the shipping if they did.  Some records remain for Trans Tasman shipping lists from Melbourne, Sydney and Tasmania so you might like to look there as well.

Cheers

have a photocopy of the wedding of John in 1888 in Petone Wellington New Zealand , names his parents as James Harvey and Elizabeth Harvey (nee Miller) but from all accounts James and Elizabeth were the generation above James born in 1840 is it possible that the two James Harveys could of married two different Elizabeth Millers

John HARVEY born 1858 and James HARVEY born 1840 were brothers.  Their parents were James HARVEY and Elizabeth nee MILLER.

Does that sound right?

James Harvey, my great great great grandfather was born in August 1819, and married Elizabeth Miller in Poplar in July - September 1839 - Cas (Stallic has the same reference as me).  The censuses show a string of children (and birth dates are approx), James (1839/1840), Elizabeth (1841, but may have died before 10th birthday), Mary Ann (1843), William (1846/1847, my gggf), Jame 1848), Joseph (1850), Thomas (1852), Richard (1854/1855), Charles (1856/1857), and John (1858).

William Harvey's wife was Sylvia Malpass (on birth cert, not the various names shown in censuses).  Their son William Harvey (b 9 July 1875) married Annie Clayton in Bradford though her real name was Anne E Mycock).  Their daughter Sylvia Harvey was born on 21 July 1895 in Shipley, and her daughter is my mother.

Small world isn't it.  I have info on the Malpass family if needed, and limited info on James's cornish ancestors.
