Hello
I was just wondering if anyone knows of a place/hamlet/village called Havannah
Havannah is in Tanfield, this is the place where my ancestors are recorded as living in the 1871 census.
I have tried googling but have found nothing.
Thank you very much in advance.

There is a places name index for Durham at http://www.durham.gov.uk/recordoffice/dro.nsf/vwebplaces

There is a places name index for Durham
The Havannah shown on the place-name index is in the Parish of Washington Holy Trinity, not Tanfield

The Havannah in Tanfied is next to Louisa Terrace. In the 1881 Census there are only two houses. RG11 Piece 4941 Folio 25 Page 47 Schedules 225 and 226

Also see http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/DUR-NBL/2007-01/1168428704 - is this the same place again?

Right so it is not in Tanfield then?

That is not the same Havannah :) The Tanfield Havannah in the 1881 Census is the schedule after Shield Row West Farm, which is preceeded by Oakeys Cottages.
Go to http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm and do a Post Code Search on DH9 8AN this will centre the map on the position of West Shield Row Farm. The 1894-1899 shows both Oakeys Cottages and the Farm,
Havannah is in that area. Unfortunately the description of the enumeration district is missing on Ancestry.
What is the 1871 Census reference?
There is also an Havannah in Kyo.

All I know is that the refernce at the side says: RG10 4955

Right I have found it again, as I did before at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/DUR-NBL/2007-01/1168428704
It was between Beamish Street and Scott Street in Stanley which
used to be Front Street, before the bypass was built.
If you do a search at http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm on the Post Code DH9 0ST and go to the 1856-1865 map you will see Havannah. Sorry for the previous confusion, but I should have realised it is the same place.
Stan

Is says there was no matches found for that postcode.
-
Did you put DH9 0ST where the 0 in 0ST is the number not the letter ?
Post codes are nearly always of the format Letter-Letter-Number Number-letter-letter i.e. AA5 5AA
From the site;
Search results
You searched on Postcode using keyword: 'DH9 0ST'. The following results were found:
dh9 0st

Hello Stan
I have found it, on the census it says something can't read as then underneath that heading it says Tanfield gthen across it says
"Village or Hamlet ?? of
Havannah
And then Ecc?????????????? District of
Tanfield
Does that mean it is in Tanfield?
I am confused.
Regards,
Ryan

Ryan
Exactly what are you confused about?
What page number are you looking at on the census?
Jennifer

I don't know why the Havannah is in Stanley area and not Tanfield area, I only know the reference which I have posted before.
-
Havannah was a village/hamlet in the Ecclesiastical Parish of Tanfield.
If you go to http://www.durham.gov.uk/recordoffice/dro.nsf/vwebparishes/tanfield+st.+margaret
you will see that the parish of Tanfield covers a large area. Stanley was just one of the hamlets in the parish.

Tanfield was a Township AND a Parochial Chapelry, consisting, in 1890, of the hamlets of Whit-le-Head, Beamish, Tantobie, Stanley, and Shield Row. It had an area of 5,820 acres. Havannah became incorporated in to Stanley as the village increased in size during the 19th century.

Oh Right I understand now, so Havannah was actual in Tanfield and so was Stanley.
-
Which family are you researching from that area? My great(x4)-grandma, Anne Wild, was born in Havanah in 1775 :)
-
Hi,
I am researching the Richardson Family, but I have heard of some Wilds don't know if they lived in Havannah though, mainly Dalton on Tees.
-
Hi,
My great great grandmother was born in Havannah in 1857. It was in the ecclesiastical (church) district of Tanfield, and that is where she was christened. I have seen an old photograph of it dating back from the 1870's which shows a short terraced row of houses in the middle of a field. I'm not sure if it could be said to be part of anywhere - I've always understood it to be of the tiniest of little hamlets.

Hi Stew,
Oh that is great Stew, do you have te old photograph, as I would love to see it.
Thanks again,

Ryan

Hi Ryan,
I saw the photograph in a book about towns & villages in County Durham at my local library. If I have time this week, I'll see if I can get it up for you.
Best wishes,
Stew

Hi Silverhawk, You may already have this, but just in case...
from the Lanchester & Esh BTS, Burial 7 Aug 1771 Robert Wild of (W?) Havanna
If you're accessing it through Family Search or Ancestry, it's on page 41/844. There are actually a few Havanna listings in here.
Cheers,

Normally I would call it Havannah, West Stanley. Or as the Americans would call it "Downtown" West Stanley. Tanfield has it own church down the bank from West Stanley. The latter has its own Church called St. Andrew's, Beamish but the Church is not really in Beamish. If you have a Morris Minor leave it at home in the Winter. Havannah is on a plateau. Hills North and South of West Stanley. East to Chester-Le-Street, West to Consett are a bit flatter. Lanchester is the Registration District. Same as the Motor Car or Submachine Gun.

Great map Stan. Do you know if anyone has software, or if there is a website which will allow the fading from an old map to a present day map? I know that there is a tool available to to do this with the Irish Griffith's Valuation maps. It allows you to exactly pinpoint an old location in present terms.
The reason I ask, is that 'your' map was surveyed in 1857, when some of my family would have been living on West Stanley Farm. It's location is not indicated, but I have sussed that it was down the line from West Stanley Colliery, and is probably just above the words 'West Stanley' on the map.
It would be nice to know.

Go to the 1861 map at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/419471/552891/10/100159 and West Stanley Farm is shown to the south of Havanah. you can see other maps up to 1989-1990
Change the zoom level with the - in the top left corner.
West Stanley Farm is called Glower-oer-em on the 1896 map. See https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=16&lat=54.8687&lon=-1.6941&layers=6&right=BingHyb

Another try to identify Havannah. The church of St. Andrew's is indicated as in Havannah.

If you want to run as Councillor in Havannah it seems to help if you have a beard!

This article is about the present Havanah Parish Ward, not the 19th century Havanah. You can see the area covered by this ward at http://www.stanley-tc.gov.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/NEW-Boundary-Map-SH-Ward-Changes-11.12.12.pdf
