Title: Latta family at St. Quivox
Post by: SueLatta on Saturday 16 August 08 23:10 BST (UK)
Does anyone have any information on the Robert Latta family at St. Quivox. Robert married Helen Manson.  He was a farmer and in the 1841 census he lived at Whitletts Village, St. Quivox, and in the 1851 census, he lived on the Main Road, Whitletts, St. Quivox.  His children were: Margaret, Agnes, Janet, Jane, William and Robert.  I am looking for more information on his sons, William and Robert.  I have William Latta, 36, proprietor of lands, in the 1881 census at St. Quivox, with his brother Robert, 32, listed in the same household as a farmer, with their mother, Helen, age 72.  The 1871 census and 1861 census also show the boys at home with their mother.  Does anyone know what happened to them after 1881?

In 1891 they are still living together in St Quivox at Dalmilling Farm.  Robert is 42 and William 46 and both are shown as farmers

Thank you.  Were they by themselves, or was anyone else listed with them?  I am assuming that they never married and that ended their lineage.

They were both unmarried and on each census had one (different) domestic servant

Hi

Thanks all - I'm tracing my family back a few centuries - Ann LATTA and William WATT were my great-great-grandparents, but I can't find a confirmed birth for William - my best bet is that Duncan WATT and Janet KELLY were his parents, but can anybody help me with this?

Also, I think Ann was his second wife, his first being Jannet ORR, with whom he had one child before she died bef. 1842 ??

Any help appreciated - I've exhausted all the possibilities that scotlandspeople.com has to offer!

Do you know where in Ayrshire Janet Orr may have lived - there is an old parish death record of a Janet Orr dying in childbirth in July 1843 but this is in Dailly. Unfortunately the opr only records her maiden name.

Hi Falkryn

The only record I've found is an 1805 opr marriage of William WATT and Jannet ORR in Dalmellington, which isn't too far away from Dailly? and I do have a possible child of this union in 1806.

I have a William WATT marrying Ann(e) LATTA in 1845, which would ring true if he'd just been widowed, although he was born in c. 1784, which would have made William 58 when he re-married, which is possible but unlikely. Ann WATT (nee LATTA) died in 1873, with her 1851 census occupation listed as InnKeeper - Kirkhill Inn.

Unfortunately the OPR death record simply states 29th July 1843 Jannet Orr - cause of death "Child".

There is no indication that she was married or otherwise although this is not out of the ordinary as legally in Scotland all married women retain their maiden names.

Hi Sossle

Thanks for that - very likely this Robert LATTA was my great great great grandfather, especially as he was later Freeman of the Borough, and his daughter Ann was recorded as being an Innkeeper on the Census of 1851.

Still like to know more about  his son-in-law, William WATT, still searching....!  :-\

Hi Falkryn

mmmm unfortunately, my marriage info for William WATT and Ann LATTA is 1842, so now unlikely that Jannet ORR was his second wife.... but will keep searching !
