Title: Kirkstead Baptism Registers circa 1829
Post by: piggywig on Saturday 16 August 08 14:20 BST (UK)
I would like to find the baptism for a Frederick GRASSBY (known variations: GRESSBY, GRESSLEY, GREPSY) born circa 1829 Kirkstead. I believe that he had three other siblings that I know about viz. John (bap Market Rasen 1828), Lucy (bap 1832 Kirkstead) and Thomas (bap 1833 Gedney), all children of Thomas GRASSBY labourer and Harret WELLS. Harriet was buried in 1837 so there may well have been others after Thomas. If anyone can find this bap it will be another supposition that I can 'tick off'. Thank you for reading this post.

Hi piggywigg

Had a look in Lincoln Archives today.  Couldn't find a baptism for a Frederick Grassby (or any variation) in Kirkstead PR, but did come across the baptism on January 1st 1832 of Lucy d. of Thomas and Harriott Grassby of Kirkstead Labourer.

Also: - Baptism on 19 May 1825 Joseph WELLS illegitimate son of Harriett Wells of Thornton  Servant
and
Baptism on 12 February 1826 of Ann - illegitimate daughter of Kezia Wells Kirkstead  Servant.

Hope this helps.

Polly

Many thanks for taking the trouble to check this out for me and for the info. This is such an interesting family -always some other surprise lurking around the corner. I now have a new theory - I suspect that the man Harriet married two years after the birth of this child was the father but already married. I shall revisit the problem armed with this new information.

Anything is possible, but one or two thoughts regarding Joseph-

his wife Ann's father was Thomas.  If his own father had been Thomas too, why call the first son John and wait until the 2nd son to call him Thomas?
If his father was Thomas GRASSBY/GRESSBY, one might have expected him to have married using that name rather than WELLS.

OK, I wasn't aware of Joseph's wife nor the name of father-in-law so that sort of scuttles my theory. I'll have to have a rethink. Frederick's bap is alluding me and I don't know why as I've managed to find the baps of 11 other siblings ranging over Lincs, Beds & Derby. Perhaps he was illegit and I need to check the WELLS baps first.

Many thanks for that info, just been contacted by a distant 'relative' from Australia so all this new data is very helpful to both of us.
