Does anyone have any information on the LATTA families in Lanarkshire?
-
I think you need to be a bit more specicfic as to what you are looking for.
What have you got, where are you stuck.
I had a look at LDS for Lanark and Dunbartonshire and there are many entries on there.
LDS - Church of The Latta Day Saints? Sorry, bad pun.
Dave

Same for Ayrshire, Fife and Renfrewshire. Lots on LDS.

I shouldn't make fun of someones name but couldn't resist.
Sue,
Honest, I'll help if I can. Your query is just a wee bit too vague.
Welcome to Rootschat btw. Hope you get involved and enjoy it.

You have all been very helpful with your replies. I will try to be a little more specific with my requests. I am webmaster for www.latta.org and I have been updating all of our Scotland pages. We have families from various parts of Scotland that I would like to update and add too. Lets start with the Lanarkshire area. I have a Robert Latta, born abt. 1816 in Ireland, who is married to Hannah Latta, and working as a coal miner in the 1841 census in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire. His children are John, Robert, Alexr, and Sarah. I have not found a death for Robert Latta, the father, but he does not appear in the 1871 census in Rutherglen, Lanarkshire. His wife Hannah is listed as head of the house, along with daughter Catherine Crossan, age 25, and two lodgers, Fannie Cardow, age 17, and Jane Cardow, age 2. In 1881, Hannah Latta is found in Rutherglen again, in the home of her daughter, Mary Welsh, age 31 and husband Michael Welsh, 34, a coal miner, and their 5 children, Patrick, Catherine, Hannah, John, and Maggie. I am looking for more information on this family. A whole list of children would be nice, since I keep coming up with daughters. Son, Robert Latta, 44, is found in the 1861 census, in Glasgow, working as a miner, and in 1881 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire with wife Anna, and two sons, John, 11, scholar, and Robert, 23, coal miner. This is all of the information that I have so far. I have found an 1871 census for 13 Cathcart Rd., Rutherglen, Lanarkshire for a John Latta, age 35, who is a coal miner, who I believe to be the son of Robert and Hannah. Also an article from the Glasgow Herald, 12 Nov. 1873 regarding a mining accident in which John Latta of 15 Cathcart Street, Rutherglen was involved in. I believe this is the same John Latta, since he was listed at 13 Cathcart Rd. in the 1871 census. Anybody have any more information for me?

Are Robert and Hannah listed with any children in the 1851 census?
Also, I did not have a John and Janet Latta living at Ceddar. Another mystery. Who do they connect with.
-
SueLatta,
I had a look at the Scottish Mining Villages site, but I cannot see a death or accident for a John Latta brfore or at the date of the Glasgow Herald article.

I jist checked the index on SP but it appears there is a 14 yr old Robert with them
There are lots of LATTA's on the 1861 census index including a 12 yr old James who was born in Philadelphia USA

Latta was a prominent family in Dumbarton. I live in Latta Street.
As I understand the Latta family owned a Tannery and were into local politics.
I am sure the local Dumbarton Library will have all the relevant details or if you want to make contact, off the website, I can do a little local research for you.

I am only gathering what information I can off the internet and from ancestry.com's census records to update these families on our website. Since this is not my direct line, I am not going into a great detail on them. I appreciate your help. If I have someone interested in this family who contacts me, I will give them the information to this website. Everyone is very helpful. Thanks.

The name having been at the top of the forum for the past week, this grave jumped out at me when I passed it today. Alexander Latta d. 25/1/1941 and his wife Jessie Nicol d. 22/10/1960.
My photo isn't brilliant since the sun was behind it and it's taken on my phone, so if anyone wants better photos let me know.
Lora :)
-
You are all WONDERFUL. Thanks so much for the census information and for the photo taken on the cell phone. I love you all. LOL.
-
Oh, can you tell me the name of the cemetery and the city that it is located in. Thanks again.
-
Sorry Sue, I must have been tired lol. It's in Cathcart Cemtery in Glasgow. (I walk my dog there and have got into the habit of looking out for stones for rootchatters)
The grave is in section 2B in the newer Linn section.
There's a plan of the cemtery on page 1 of this thread: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,279673.0.html
Do you want me to get a better photo?
Lora
-
Lora. If you walk your dog there anyway, please take another photo. Maybe just a bit further back. I want to upload it onto our website with the information on Alexander Latta, if you don't mind me using your photo on the website. Thanks for your help.
-
Sue, if you pm me your email address I'll send you the photos. clouded over this afternoon so I could take it better (who decided to align graves east to west?!)
Also, when I looked at your site I noticed you list Latto as a variant so I took a pic of Robert Latto Walker's grave (also in Cathcart, Linn sec 2B) in case you know of him. He died 26/11/1947 and was the husband of Mary Shaw McKinnon.
since I'm on a roll, lol, is there any more Cathcart area Latta's I should be keeping an eye out for?

I was in Stonehouse cemetery today and took a photo of the headstone of Anne Latta who died in 1913 aged 72 years. She was married to James Harrower.
Send me a pm with your email and I will send a copy of the photo

Sally - I am also a decendant of Robert Latta and Hannah Coyle, they are my g/g grandparents, I am a descendant of their daughter Catherine. Her son, Robert Crossen was my paternal grandfather. My father told me she was lovely, with a broad Scots accent, he adored her.
Could you email back so we can sort out the connection? I can't see which Branch they are from on the Latta website. Thanks so much! Best, Jackie.
-
Hi Jackie and Sally
http://latta.org/Notes/Notes/Note%2014.htm
Is where Robert & Hannah appear on the LATTA.ORG site - Note14, but they don't appear to have a branch.
Robert's parents were John LATTA & Mary ROBERTSON, according to his 1863 death record - though I'm sure you have all that!
(I'm not related, but have researched this family.)
Cheers

Hi again
Looking through my notes, I see I have wondered if Robert LATTA (m Hannah COYLE) is part of, somehow : Branch 12.
The evidence is only circumstantial :
In 1855 in Rutherglen, a William LATTA b c 1829/1831 Co. Tyrone married an Agnes RANKINE. This William's parents were Robert LATTA and Rebecca McLARAE (or McRAE). One of the Witness' to the 1855 marriage was: John LATTA, Coal Miner. I can't find that William ever had a brother named John, only that he probably had a brother named Robert and a sister name Catherine (their father Robert died, and mother Rebecca remarried).
NOTES:
One Census states William's pob as Tyrone, Ireland. His marriage states Donag-hadee, Ireland. There is a Donaghadee in Co. Down - but it is probably Donaghedy in Co. Tyrone which is where a lot of LATTA's came from, principally identifed from Branch #12. It helps that on both occasions where his pob is stated, William himself was the source of the information.
It is not proved, but a witness to William's 1855 marriage, is John LATTA who may be the son b abt 1835 of Robert LATTA and Hannah COYLE. The witness did not sign his own name on the record - all names have been written by the registering officer (ie can't compare witness signature to a known signature of John LATTA b 1835).However, all indications are that there were no other John LATTA's in Rutherglen at the time who could have been the witness. The question remains: What was the witness John LATTA's relationship to William - brother? a cousin? half-brother?
Cheers

Ambly, thank you for letting me know about my Latta branch, that Robert Latta, husband of Hannah Coyle (my gg grandfather) died in 1863. I understand from your message that his parents were John Latta and Mary Robertson, this was on his death certificate. Can you give me any more info about his parents, please?
All their children are listed in Note 14, (I think that's right), my g/grandmother was Catherine Latta and her son Robert Crossen (an) was my grandfather, who I never met, as he died a year after my father was born in an accident.
Does anyone have more info on Hannah Coyle? Thank you all so much, you have been so helpful!
Best, Jackie
