Does anyone have any information on the LATTA families in Fife?

Sue,

Perhaps you could give an indication of what you already have - that will save helpful RootsChatters from duplicating searches?

Also, provide some names and dates.

Have you reached a brickwall?  If so what is it?

If you search in the IGI (International Genealogical Index) on FamilySearch at:
http://www.familysearch.org
for surname LATTA (also try LATTO?), region British Isles, country Scotland, county Fife
you wil get many many hits.

There would be no point whatsoever in anyone regurgitating, on RootsChat, lengthy lists of people from the IGI who may, or may not, be relevant for you - given that you can so easily look them up yourself  :)

ScotlandsPeople at:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
is another excellent resource (it is a pay-per-view site but charges are reasonable).

A Google search may also be worthwhile.

Good luck,

JAP

I am the webmaster of www.latta.org and I have information on our website on "Note 13" about  Robert Latta (also seen as "Latto") and his wife Margaret Doige.  They were married Nov. 23, 1818 in Fife, Scotland.  Their children born in Fife, Scotland were Isobel, Catherine, Margaret, and Grace.  I have no other information about families in Fife, and would like to gather as much information as I can so that I can add more information to "Note 13" on Fife, Scoland and the Latta families there.  Thanks for everyones help.  I have gather a lot of census information from www. freecen.rootsweb.com on the "Latto" families from Fife.

Sue,

See my earlier reply.

I would also point out that births and marriages from the Scotland Statutory Registers, 1855-1875, have been indexed in the IGI.

I am sure you will be able to find much information about Fife LATTA families (from the IGI for a start).

Over to you to do the work  :)

Good luck,

JAP

Thanks for the offer, but I am actually updating our Latta website (www.latta.org) and I am trying to gather as much information on the Scotland Latta families as I can.  We do not put any information regarding living Lattas on our website.  I am not in a position to write to Latto families for their information at this time.

Robert Latto b. 15 Aug 1847 in St Monans married Jean Bayne 27 Nov 1869 in Cameron. He died 1908 in Anstruther Easter. He was a Carter.

They had at least four children: David, Andrew Bayne, Jane Douglas, and Margaret Sim.

David Latto was born 7 Feb 1869 in Cameron and married Jane Laidlaw Graham. He died in Dundee in 1954.

Andrew Bayne Latto was born 16 Feb 1872 in Dunino and married Christina McGregor 25 Dec 1896 in Kelty. He died 26 Nov 1909 in Kelty. He was a shoemaker.

They had nine children, but I only have five: Margaret McGregor, Jane Bain, Christina McGregor, Andrina and Helen McGregor.

Jane Douglas Latto was born 21 Apr 1874 in Carnbee and died in Anstruther in 1942.

Margaret Sim Latto was born 20 Oct 1876 in Carnbee and died in Burntisland in 1957.

David Latto and Jane Laidlaw Graham had one child: Florence Jeannie Graham, born 5 Feb 1900 in Dundee and died 1962 in Dundee.

Andrew Bayne Latto and Christina McGregor had nine children, here are the five I have:

Margaret McGregor Latto was born 31 Oct 1897 in Kinross and married Robert Sneddon 23 Dec 1925. They had two children. She died in 1981.

Jane Bain Latto was born 1 Sep 1899 in Beath. She married Hector Ross Sneddon 31 Oct 1923. They had two children. She died 1977 in Kelty.

Christina McGregor Latto was born 27 Dec 1901 in Oakfield, Beath, and died 1903 in Kelty.

Andrina Latto was born 16 Jan 1904 in Oakfield. She married Thomas Beveridge 2 Apr 1929 in Kelty. They had one child. She died in 1973 in Kinross.

Helen McGregor Latto was born 27 Jan 1909 in Oakfield. She was an Ophthalmologist in Manchester.

Hope this is of use.

I have just found Latta was the original married name of my great great grandmother

Isabella Baxter (1852 - 1936) married James Latta (1853 - 1885) in 1872 in Dunfermline and had a son called John. James died in Buckhaven, Fife

she then went on to marry John Bain and they had 4 children (according to the 1901 census) Thomas (my great-grandad), Henry, James and Jessie

Could this help you in anyway?

Hi Jillian

I believe James LATTA or LATTO b Ceres was the son of :
John LATTA & Christian GALLOWAY

his wife: Isabella BAXTER was the daughter of:
Charles BAXTER & Isabella MORRIS
(Isabella BAXTER nee MORRIS is on the 1901 Census with her daughter now Mrs Isabella BAIN).

James & Isabella had 5 children:
Isabella Morris LATTA b 1873 Dunfermline (C81, and birth on IGI)
Catherine LATTA b 1875 Dunfermline (C81 & C91)
John LATTA b abt 1877 Buckhaven (C81 & C91)
Annie LATTA b abt 1879 Buckhaven (81 & C91)
Jemima LATTA b abt 1882 (C91)

1891: 134 Lumphinnans  - Ballingry
Head: John BAIN 38, Coal Miner, b Auchterderran, Fife
Wife: Isabella B BAIN 38, b Auchterderran, Fife
Dau: Isabella BAIN 18, Linen Weaver Unemployed ,  b Auchterderran, Fife
Son: John BAIN 15, Coal Miner, b  b Auchterderran, Fife
Dau: Elizabeth BAIN 13, Pithead Worker, b  b Auchterderran, Fife
Son: Thomas BAIN 8, b Wemyss Fife
Son: Henry BAIN 1, b Beath Fife
Step-Dau: Catherine LATTA 16, Pithead Worker, b Dunfermline Fife
Step-Son: John LATTA 14, Coal Miner, b Wemyss Fife
Step-Dau: Annie LATTA 12, Mothers Help, b Wemyss Fife
Step-Dau: Jemima LATTA 9, Scholar, b Wemyss

James LATTA died 1885 in Buckhaven (Wemyss).
Your gt-Grandad Thomas BAIN was born abt 1883 - predating the death of James LATTA.

In 1881 James & Isabella and their children are on the Census as LATTO.

Both of John BAIN's wives were named Isabella. His first was Isabella HUGH married 1872 Beath.
In 1881 John BAIN is with his 1st wife named Isabella & their chd, who have some similar names and/or ages as the LATTA(O) children. The eldest of John & Isabella HUGH's children was named Isabella b 1872 Auctherderran and is on the IGI.

Scotlands People records the death of Isabella BAIN other surname HUGH, in 1886 Auchterderran - approx 3 years after the birth of Thomas BAIN.

On the face of it,  it looks to me as if Thomas BAIN was the biological son of Isabella HUGH, not of Isabella BAXTER.

Although, if Isabella BAXTER was  the only 'mother' he really knew -  I wonder what mother name was recorded on  his marrriage and death? And if this agrees with his birth record?

(I'm not related to these families - I do have LATTO's though, and have researched many of the LATTO & LATTA families in Scotland out of interest in the name  :) )

Cheers
AMBLY
