Title: Henderson look-up?
Post by: Rose8 on Thursday 14 August 08 01:17 BST (UK)
Looking for a Thomas Henderson who was married in Belfast, NI in 1910.  His marriage cert states his father's name as Albert and his place of birth Lancashire.  In the March 1911 census his age was entered as 33.  His address was given as unknown on his son's birth cert in April 1911.  Any help much appreciated. :)

Hello Rose and welcome to rootschat
I am sad to say that nothing is showing up for 1881-1901 censuses for a Thomas with a father Albert.
Free BMD has 6 Thomas born March 1877- March 1879 in Lancashire.
1881 has 4 born 1878+/- 2 yrs - none with a father Albert.
1891 has 3- all with parents.
1901 has 5 - 3 are sons at home with parents; 1 is a married patient in hospital in St Helens and 1 is a soldier at Lancaster barracks - born Lancaster.

Nowhere can I see an Albert to tie in with any of these.

Is Thomas on 1901 census in Belfast?
What is his occupation on census?
Do the witnesses at the marriage offer any clues?

best wishes
heywood

Hi there! thanks for the quick reply and look up!

Thos Henderson  was stated on the 1911 census as a general labourer.  We can't find him in the 1901 census though his wife was still living at home with her family at that time.

He was married in July 1910 (Marriage cert), he was with his wife in March 1911 (census data) and by April 1911 (son's birth cert) he was named as the father but his address was unknown.  The witnesses to their marriage have different names so not close relatives.

We have often thought that he might have been a soldier and that's how he came to be in Ireland and met his wife, so that makes the soldier in Lancaster Barracks very interesting.  How would we get his Army Serial No. or any details about his service?

Thanks again
Rose :D

Hello Rose,
these are the details from the 1901 census:

1901 RG13; Piece: 3992; Folio: 119; Page: 7
Thomas Henderson 21 yrs Private Royal Lancaster Regiment b Lancaster
so you can see the age is out by a couple of years.
I have found him in 1891 with parents Adam and Emma.

You can see the family in 1881 free on Family Search/Ancestry at RG11; Piece: 4263; Folio: 40; Page: 16

There are others born 1879 to 1881 and it does look as though you need more information but from where - that is the problem.

I'm sorry I can't think of anything else to do. You could try the Armed Forces board on rootschat for advice re following up the soldier theory.

best wishes
heywood
