I'll help out if I can Sybil.
As for hotels, the one folk were in last year seemed OK.

This is another one that friends stayed in recently - they liked it.  It is away from Glasgow centre but within walking distance - also near Glasgow Green / Peoples Palace / Merchant City.
It's within jumping in distance of the Clyde if the night turns out really bad!

After the brilliant day we will have on the Saturday, who fancies going out for a meal en masse this year?
Last year was great but a lot of folk went their own way.
Nothing wrong with that but wouldn't it be better if there was an organised night out?
Anyone got any suggestions? (or opinions of course!)

Hi all,
I've been considering evening meal idea.

Sussed out a few places today with my daughter.  Couple of nice places around the Botanics.  All happy to cater for a large group even although it's a Saturday - they just need notice.

I've been thinking though (ouch!).  Most folk that are booking into hotels are probably paying for the evening meal in their bill anyway?  Correct me if I'm wrong.

How about an organised Sunday lunch - if nothing else, aspin can be there!  ;D

I'm just throwing this in as another idea.

Sybil is on holiday so we can't make a decision.  However, it would be nice to get opinions for her return.

Dave

Share transport, bring a sleeping bag and crash at my place - open invite.  I've already got a cheap Welsh student staying for the weekend (no names mentioned).

Hi all,

Just thought I'd explain something. (I had a comment made to me which I felt warranted a wee response).

Essentially, what I want to say is....I hope no-one thinks I'm trying to take over the organisation of "The Meet".  I'm not.

Sybil and I have exchanged a few emails about it.  I'm in Glasgow so it seems to make sense that I try to help out, if I can.  Syb isn't in Glasgow.

Whilst the weekend is very much Sybil's cookie, she asked me to watch the board while she is on holiday.  All the venues are Sybil's ideas and she is co-ordinating everything.  An 'off board' conversation I had with her has been about the best time / place to meet on the Saturday.  Sybil will let us all know in due course.

The suggestions of an evening meal or lunch on Sunday are my own thoughts and nothing to do with the 'official' organisation of the weekend.

As I said in an earlier post....
Sybil is on holiday so we can't make a decision.  However, it would be nice to get opinions for her return.

Hope you all know where I'm coming from (I don't mean Glasgow  ;D).

Dave

So dont worry about it.

Hi Gen,

The last time Sybil and I talked it was...

meet around 10ish
Transport Museum http://www.glasgowmuseums.com/venue/index.cfm?venueid=7
Art Galleries http://www.glasgowmuseums.com/venue/index.cfm?venueid=4
Hunterian Museum http://www.hunterian.gla.ac.uk/visit/visit_index.shtml

then at ten past 10.............................. ;D

Modified....I've added some links.

Rest assured, Sybil has it all in hand and will be letting us all know what the full schedule for the weekend is.

It is going to be a great weekend.

As a member of last year's outing I can thoroughly reccommend Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery asI spent all day Sunday there and can say it's the finest gallery / museum I have ever visited ...simple stunning ! Sadly there is a chance  I may not be able to make it this year due to a few last minute problems that have arisen ...it all really depends on some hospital dates  but if I can I will ...We had a great time last year...It's a beautiful building both outside and in...

Hi Dave

You're doing a grand job minding the shop whilst our wee Sybil is off in the sun.

I'd prefer meal Saturday night than a long lunch Sunday cos we have to drive back to Yorkshire Sunday but easy about where - we'll eat anything!

looking forward to it

Hi Dave,

Saturday sounds OK with me but have to ask OH as he will be doing the driving back down to Palnackie if we don't stay over night in Glasgow
Will sort that out later

I know some are staying at the Premier Inn  but which one I would be happy to stay at one of those hotels ,then we could taxi into the city

Go back to replies 36, 41 and 43.  There were a couple of links there.  Living in Glasgow, I've never stayed overnight in hotels here so don't really know whats a good price.

Thanks for kind offer Dave but I am a bit long in the tooth for bed rolls on floors - been there, done that, about ........................ years ago ;D

Have found £27.50 return on Nat. Express train and a VERY nice city centre B&B from £25 a night, waiting for their reply for exact cost.

Hi Gen

It does sound a bit steep but as I originally booked on my own I thought somewhere like that would be better for me.  Although £25 sounds real good.     Dave's offer came to late as I had already booked  and I think I may be a bit too old for sleeping on floors too.

I'm taking the easy route - train so I don't have to navigate myself through a strange city and B&B's are better value than hotels, I could write a book on B&B's :-) No parking problems either, as long as there are no "leaves on the line" for my train :-)

Lonely Planet guide rates Glasgow as one of the world's top 10 cities

see the report here http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2008/oct/15/glasgow-scotland

Of course those who have visited Glasgow already will know that it's up there with the best, but if you are still making up your mind about coming to our rootschatters Glasgow meet, why not get trendy and join us on November 8th/9th  ;D

After several "meets" in the german forum, can I add something from practical experience ...

The name badges are good, to link forum names to faces, but for "first contact", i.e. for people looking for a group of people, who might be the right ones, "bigger is better"  :)

Apart from individual name badges make one with

  RootsChat
Glasgow Meet
or something similar,

and print it out at least A5 or even A4.  put it in a plastic envelope with stiff card at the back and display prominently or wave it at people who look like they are not sure if this is the right group....

Have fun,
Bob

Sorry you cant make it jrt but thank you so much for letting me know most appreciated
Louise Welcome aboard, I will add your name  to the list

OK now for an update, I have reserved a table at the Cail Bruich
and they have said as long as we are there by 6.30 we will still be able to have the pre-theatre meal but as its extremely busy they normally expect folks to leave their tables after 2 hours,
After the meal the venue I have picked is the Oran-Mohr, This is right next to the restaurant,
  http://www.oran-mor.co.uk/
The Oran-Mohr is an old church, when I looked at there website I noticed they also do a pre theatre meal , so I checked it out with them also Just In case
they have asked me for £10 a head to reseave the table but are willing to come and go a bit on that as I am organizing a large party( I have to go and pay the day before or as soon as we arrive) , but the gentleman I spoke to looked at the bookings and said that he can put us in from 5.30 to 7.30 then we would move to the bar they Do need at least a weeks notice, for confirmation and numbers, for the meal which would mean definite numbers bye the latest Friday night
Could you give me you thoughts on this Please, I think the 5.30 sitting might be a bit to early for some folks so let me know.
There's no prob with the reservation for the Cail Bruich then to the Oran Mohr for a drink but i just thought I would see what you thought

Sybil - Did you have a look at the menus?

The last time I was at Oran Mhor, there wasn't much of a choice and it was a bit pricey at that. Haven't been to Cail Bruich so can't comment.

I would go for the Cail Bruich but am quite happy to go with the flow.

£10 a head deposit - I think they're 'at it'
Would we get a refund if our meal was £9.99  ;D   ;D   ;D

I think Jules is the only one so far that can fully appreciate the effort involved in organising something like this.

Louise, I'm usually extremely shy and feel awkward when I meet people for the first time but as soon as I met everyone last year at the meet, I felt at ease...everyone is really so nice and welcoming and friendly...you'll have a great time  ;D

Hello Sybil/ Dave.

Have read a few of your posts, now that the grandkids heve gone back home.
I have read a few mentions of a "badge". Do we need abadge, to download? or is the onus on us to show/wear some means of description, ie,  a badge/label, saying RC/ RootsChat.?

Gail - my OH would rather do the dishes or do the ironing than talk about Family History so I'm keeping my fingers crossed he'll do exactly that when I'm out enjoying myself! (Not that I think he'll actually do either!)

Still, I'm hoping if I ask him nicely, he'll chauffeur me back and forth - 'specially on the Saturday so I might be able to have a wee drinky poo.  ;)

Poll - don't worry - I've no doubt you'll be sick looking at photos by the time it's all over!

Yes, I think he did.

Poll and I were deep in conversation about sculptors when we were wandering around the Necropolis last year, but I'd be lying if I said I remembered exactly who we discussed.  :-\

I was on a tour of the City Chambers Years ago and Im sure that name was mentioned

James Pittendrigh Macgillivray (1856-1938) was quite prolific in Glasgow and held in high esteem
Quote
Macgillivray also produced a number of monuments in Glasgow's cemeteries which feature bronze portrait and figurative reliefs.

These include the monuments in the Necropolis to Peter Stewart (1887); Alexander McCall (1888); Annie Greenhill (1889); Sir James Robertson (1889) and the Allan Family (1894-9, portrait relief lost).

In Cathcart cemetery, he produced the monument to Margaret and Annie Brown, with a double portrait relief of the girls (1888), and in Lambhill Cemetery, the monument to the architect James Sellars (1890, bronze relief lost).

As an architectural sculptor he produced figurative work for a number of important Glasgow buildings in the 1880s.

[Rev. James Shanks, Maryhill Parish Church, Glasgow, 1889 (lost)] These include, the City Chambers, for which he carved the spandrel figures in the loggia (1886); the former Anderson's Medical College, 56 Dumbarton Road, for which he executed a tympanum relief group depicting the 16th Century physician, Peter Lowe and his Students and a pair of winged figures (1888-90); and the statues of the Engineer and Shipwright on the former Fairfield's shipyard (1890).

In addition to those mentioned I have seen a work attributed to him in Glasgow Cathedral

If it's a good weekend - could a wee trip there be squeezed in?

Have you got an itinerary worked out yet? If so, sorry, I must have missed it, could you post it again please?

How Strange Elaine, ::)
it's like cardboard City in here I  have housing association coming on the 17th to replace the heating, 18th to start the rewiring, and lower the ceilings, because there no longer allowed to rewire from the house above, January the start kitchen and bathroom's all though I have opted out of kitchen since it took Alan and I best part of 4 years to get it the way we wanted. >:(
So I know exactly how you feel, I have tried ignore it it will go away, but it don't :(

but despite all that I am getting excited too, cant wait to meet everyone,
going to be sooooo much fun

Shame quite a few of you can't make it but the reasons are understandable.  You will be missed.

Allan, no promises but might try and get out to the West End on Friday night.  I'll see how the evening pans out.  Don't want to get home too late since there is an early start the next morning.  I'm over on the South side.  I'll send you an email with my mobile number although I believe Sybil may already have passed it on.
