Henry Fagg m Sarah Browning 1806 at Elmstone. Trying to trace them back and wondered if this linked to BettyofKent's interests? Diane C

Hi Diane, welcome to RootsChat :)
The Faggs are in my OH's tree, I haven't done much on them, just the 'bare bones' from the Censuses.
I've got a Henry Fagg, born c1781 Wickham.
Wife Sarah (surname unknown) born c1791 Ash.
Three children (known so far)
Harriet c1824
William c1827 Elmstone (married Mary Spain in 1847)
Julia c1837 Elmstone (married Syrus Edward Yetman)
Anything there sound familiar?

Thanks Betty! It looks like we are linked.
William (married to Mary) is a younger brother of our JAMES FAGG born March 1820. We have Mary-Ann 20 Mar 1808, Sarah 3 Dec 1809, Hannah 7 Apr 1811, George 21 Jun 1812, Thomas 13 Mar 1814, Henry 3 Mar 1816, Charlotte 15 Jun 1818/19 Jul 1818 [not married but has daughter Julia 3 May 1835], JAMES 3 Mar 1820/9Apr 1820, Charles 14 Jul 1822, Harriet 20 Feb 1825 [refer to Eastry Workhouse Register for 1849. died 14 Oct 1849 buried 17 Oct 1849 age 23 years], William 4 Mar 1827 [m Mary & has Sarah 17 Feb 1850, Charles 14 Dec 1851, John 12 Mar 1852, Elizabeth 2 Mar 1856], Emma 4 Jul 1830 [buried 2 Apr 1832 age 22 months], Alfred 3 Nov 1833 [buried 29 Mar 1835 age 18 months].
We had not found Julia!
JAMES moved to London as a coachman. In 1861 he was at 2a Porchester Terrace Mews and 1871 at 6 Craven Hill Mews. He was at Paddington Workhouse in 1881 and died there 15 Jan 1884 age 62 with his address as 38b Porchester Terrace.
HENRY FAGG was his father. We have a wedding record for 13 Oct 1806 to Sarah BROWNING at Preston (by Wingham). The banns were at Elmstone in Aug & Sep. We think Sarah may be the daughter of John Browning and Anna Jarvest who married 1 Feb 1783 at Elmstone [siblings Ann, Elizabeth, Judith and John] but this would make her only 16 1/2 when married. We haven't managed to check the 1841 and 1851 censuses to see if this is the right Sarah - are your birthplaces from the 1851 census?
Thanks, Diane

Hi Diane
I thought I would eventually link up with someone on here :) :) :)
I'll look for my notes on this family, it's a while since I've done anything on them & I need to refresh my memory.

Hi Diane
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, we've got builders in, & today is the first chance I've had to get to the box with my notes on this family, not to mention having nowhere to sort the papers before now ;D
OH's great-great grandfather was George Dennis. On the censuses his wife is shown as Sarah. I couldn't find their oldest child registered under Dennis, but found him under Fagg.
Going by the 1851 census, Sarah's parents were William & Mary.
William's parents were Henry & Sarah.
I've just sent for George's marriage certificate to be certain I'm on the right track.
I'll let you know what the cert says.

Hi Diane
I've only just found the time to get back to this, better late than never ;D
The marriage certificate for George DENNIS & Sarah FAGG shows them married 3rd October 1868. Eythorne, Kent.
George's father is John DENNIS.
Sarah's father is William FAGG.
There's a marriage for a William FAGG to a Mary SPAIN in 1847. I'll have to get that to get further back with Mary, & to confirm William's father as Henry.

This is an old thread.
I have a Charles Fagg from Elmstone, parents Henry Fagg and Sarah Browning, their parents Richard Fagg and Ann Stroud & John Browning and Anna Jarvest.
However, this was from many years ago too and I don't know where the supporting documents are so if anyone has anything I'd be grateful.
Many thanks,
Rich

Hello, I work in an Oxfam bookshop and someone donated a book which turns out to be a family history of Edith Chadwick Horner b 1871 who was from the Fagg family.
It is a proper bound book with a spine title of The Place Names of Warwickshire, but when you open it, there is just her handwritten life story on blank pages. I have no idea how that would have worked - maybe she got bookbinder to create it. But why would you do that with that book?
She started Jan 6 1941 going back through her family history. In the back is an attached in 'envelope' which, I think has some diary papers.
I have not read through all of her story but I have discovered Frank and Jane Fagg from Canterbury were her parents. She had a sister called Emma Fagg who married (apparently 'awful') Ted/Edward Skinner.
I would love to know how this book came to be created - to just her story - but why Warwickshire Place Names?
Her last entry is 1956 and her first entry if 'to her grandchildren Jan 6 1941 writing of the back history of her family.
So I am happy to send this book to anyone researching this family. Would also love to know whether there is a story here of who she was. Many thanks

I had to delve into this a bit, as Fagg is a local name here. Is the Oxfam shop in Kent - she was in Tenterden in 1939? Brought up in Canterbury, father a successful shopkeeper, married Arthur Chadwick Horne 1900, and moved to London. She died in 1964, of Woodchurch.

Hi Lucy! I was forwarded your post by a very observant Ancestry user MC.
You have found my great grandmother's life history! I only have a very poor typed copy of it.
I would love to recover the bound book for the family!
Great grandma died in Woodchurch in 1964 aged 93. I have a distinct memory of visiting her, aged 4, the year before at her cottage in Woodchurch.
Her daughter Celia died aged 94 and just recently Celia's daughter (my mother) Alice died aged 92. Some long life genes in the female line!
Could you contact me so we can make some arrangements for a donation to Oxfam and to cover postage to Bedfordshire??
Yours, excitedly,
Mark Stephens.

How lovely that a member of the family saw this and wants the book!

Lucy Aspinall will have to make a couple more posts before the personal message system will work for her, and allow you two to make contact.
I hope Mark is able to be united with the written family story.

Thank you for the delving. Her last entry in the book is 1956. She started writing it in Jan 6 1941 when she was 70.
Hopefully, Mark Stephens is united with the book if it works for him.
I gather I have to post a few times to be able to reply 'generally' to people.
Ps the book was donated to Oxfam in Petersfield and I have no idea who donated it or why - which is a real shame but that is what it is like when you are sorting through bags and boxes of books.
Thanks for the help and contacts
