Help needed please to help me sort out a member of my Rossi branch -
Frederick Orton Rossi was born in 1811. I have found a marriage to Patience Hockey in 1838 and have them in the 1851 census (He is given as Fredk Arton), living in St Marylebone. I can't find them in 1841. She was born in Glastonbury, Somerset.
In 1871, I have a Patience Rossi in the Saint Pancras workhouse - I think she is given as Widower, but it is difficult to read. (RG10 - 87 - 12) I cannot find her in 1861, or her death (I looked for the death on FreeBMD).
However, I have Frederick Rossi in 1861 (RG9 - 59 - 39) (definitely the same one as he was a sculptor) - and his wife is given as Susan, born in Maidenhead Kent.
In 1871, he is lodging in Brentford- he is married. (RG10 - 33 - 3)
I have found a Frederick Rossi who died in Brentford in 1876, aged 65 - the age fits.
I would be very grateful for help filling in the gaps and untying the knot!
Many thanks
Tilly

Looks like Patience is here in 1841 with her family.

Hello Sue and Tati
Thank you for your help (again!) - I have found the census with Patience in 1841, but I have searched and searched and cannot find Ross(i) in 1841 ???- Are there any other names on the census? I don't know where I'm going wrong - I've gone through 800 Ross names and have now reached Reach!
If he had divorced Patience, would there be a record of it somewhere ?
Thanks again
Tilly

Can't see ANY Frederick Ross in Marylebone in 1841?

Puffs chest out. ;D
No actually I found him on theorigins network and he was transcribed as Ross on there, so it was very easy.
If you can't find em on Ancestry, then Origins is the next option.
;D ;D

Thanks for the tip - I think I'll sign up for a month on Origins and see if I can fill in any gaps, especially on my Scots/Irish side which is proving very tricky! ::)......................

I have also been looking at the Rossi Family and found this string o posts
.
In 1861 Frederick Rossi aged 50, sculptor, was listed with a wife Susan Rossi - 50, born Maidstone Kent. As Patience died in 1873 it is unlikely that he married again.
Patience seems to have been imprisoned in 1849
England & Wales, Criminal Registers, 1791-1892
Name: Patience Rosi
Date of Trial: 17 Jul 1849
Trial Year: 1849
Location of Trial: Middlesex, England
Sentence: Imprisonment
Crime: Larceny
Sentence: 3 months
Class: HO 26; Piece: 55; Page: 196
... and in the workhouse in 1868 and 1871
London, England, Workhouse Admission and Discharge Records, 1764-1930
Name: Patience Rossi
Discharge Age: 59
Record Type: Discharge
Birth Date: abt 1809
Discharge Date: 22 Sep 1868
Discharge Place: Camden, St Pancras, London, England
...perhaps Frederick was estranged from her. The couple were together in 1851. In 1871 Frederick (sculptor aged 60 Married) was lodging with the family of Richard Nunce, a stone mason, in Acton
Has anyone any information about Susan?

I've been reading through the posts again - it is a very long time since I started the thread!
I've also had a look at Fred on my family tree..... and I am in as much of a muddle now as I was then. I haven't done much family tree work lately, just on and off.
I don't really know who Susan is!
Patience was definitely his wife and died in the workhouse in 1873.
In 1851 he is with Patience in the census.
In 1861 he is with Susan in the census, and in 1871 is given as "married" but no wife's name.
As Patience was jailed in 1849, maybe he stuck by her for a while, but gave up after a while and got together with Susan? He just called her "Mrs. Rossi" for appearances ? Which means that it will be difficult to find her maiden name - which doesn't help!
But I have just seen that I have Susan (Rossi) in the workhouse in St Pancras in 1862.
Is it at all possible Patience and Susan are one and the same person? Or have I gone wrong somewhere!
Tilly x
