Hi,
Looking for the Obituary Of Smith Anderson Provost of Kilsyth 1889-1891.
Hoping a kind soul could do a look up in the Local Kilsyth paper or point me in the right direction.
Death could be between 1900 and 1930, apologies for the big gap as there is a possibility of any of 3 Smith Anderson,s.
1. died 1900 another died 1929.
many thanks, Billy.

hi Billy, have heard all about you from my sister, Eastend! Will try and find out what I can on the obituary> Will probably try Kilsyth library as a starting point. Will get back to you soon as i've got something. Regards Betty28. ;D
-
Hi Billy, Hope alls well with you this fine day!! Have made a phone call to Kilsyth Library to enquire if they had any records of old papers. They say they have the Kilsyth Chronicle dating from 1898-1960, then a break of 24 years or so. They're on fische so i was hoping to take a run through at some point tomoz. My time doing this is also limited as i have 2 kids and for the obvious reasons, wouldn't dare take them to a peaceful library!! My hubs is back tomoz morning, so maybe i'll be able to sneak a couple of hours peace-if he'll let me!! Will let you know how i get on. Regards, Betty :D

Hi Billy and Betty (sounds like a double act!!)
From bits and pieces I've found out I am thinking that the older Smith who died in 1900 was the Provost. As Betty already knows I had discovered a few months ago passport applications for the younger Smith Anderson though until tonight didn't have the final piece of the jigsaw that confirmed it was our Smith Anderson. Tonight I found his death certificate (20 April 1935) and it confirmed his parents as Smith Anderson, Colliery Manager, and Marion Benny. It also noted his usual residence as Alameda, California, USA which ties in with the passport applications I have. He died in Kelvingrove, Glasgow, so I'm guessing it was just chance that he happened to be visiting here when he died of prostate cancer.
From the passport papers and various US Federal Census' he emigrated in 1882. He was widowed at age 52 in 1913 when his wife Emma Bartlett died. The 1910 Census shows children Helen M Anderson age 17 and Smith C Anderson, aged 10. Betty and I know through my dad that we had relations over in America called Smith Chesley Anderson so this might fit.
Attached to papers in 1918 is a letter from the National War Work Council of the YMCA of US certifying that he was appointed a Secretary for service with the troops of the American Expeditionary Force In France. 1921 papers show that he was coming back to the British Isles on family business and to attend a Rotary Convention. His occupation in America at that time was Dairyman, and on his death certificate he is noted as a Company Director.
The long and short of all this, is that I don't think Smith Junior was the Provost 'cause he was living in America at the time. But I think the rest of it makes interesting reading too. I did wonder if the YMCA would have any archive information. Good luck at the library Betty.

Hi Lesley,
Thanks for the update,
Smith Anderson Jnr had an active life it would be great to find out about the Anderson,s in America.
It maybe also worth while getting in touch with The Anderson Association
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~Andersonassociation/. to see if they have any info or contacts.
It is good that we can exclude Smith jnr as he was in America at the time.
So it looks like Smith Snr for Provost.
On another thread Anne Anderson is hoping to do a look up for us at Falkirk Library, Kind regards Billy

Hi I have just typed in the wrong website address for the Anderson Association.
Try www.anderson-assoc.org/
cheers,Billy

Hi Billy and Eastend. That would be quite a good name for a double act, wouldn't it!! Anyhoo, hubby came home, i ventured all the way to Kilsyth - to find it closed!! :o of all the days i picked to go and get soaked in the process, I picked the half day!! Just my luck!! :'( So as i headed back for home, the rain subsided and i pulled into Denny cemetry(the one near the new high School. i thought there would be alot more older dates on the stones. Does anyone know if there is another cemetry in Denny thats older? i promptly got out my digital camera and started snapping all mentions of Andersons just incase any names crop up whilst we're all doing this. I've got a feeling i might be spending alot of time with the dead!! It was a lovely peaceful walk without the kids, but kept getting the feeling someone was watching!!?? Maybe it was all the bunnies!! So, I shall try the library another day! Billy, you mentioned that Anne was going to look up Falkirk library, who is she and what line does she decend from? My dad was also asking if you had any relatives near by? I think he's been bitten by the bug aswell!! Take care, Betty. :)
-
Hi Betty,
I will send you a P.M,
Kind regards Billy.

Hi Betty,
I'm not connected to any of yours or Billy's Andersons. I just happened to be another Anderson - only through marriage though!
Denny Cemetery wasn't established till the beginning of the 1880's, so unless any of the stones were to mention someone buried elsewhere, you won't find anybody before this date. I can send you an index of all the Andersons mentioned on stones in Denny but this doesn't guarantee they're buried there. I've spent a good few years photographing and transcribing all the existing stones in Denny but there are plenty of graves without stones too as I'm sure you would have noticed!
You asked about other Denny Cemeteries, well . . . . . . .
1.
Broompark Churchyard, now the Broompark Centre, in Davies Row in Denny (behind the library - if you know where that is!)
2.
Denny Old Parish Churchyard, right on Denny Cross. (One stone only - Margaret Anderson, wife of James Thomson of Carronford, 1844)
3.
Dennyloanhead Churchyard, at Dennyloanhead , in the process of being re-developed. (One stone only - Agness Muirhead, wife of John Anderson, died 20th July 1875 aged 75)
4.
Dunipace Old Burial Ground, right in the centre of the Hills of Dunipace Cemetery on the road to Larbert. (No stones bearing the name Anderson)
All my information comes from existing legible stones, not from burial records and I must state that sometimes I have to make a guess at dates etc., so anything I've transcribed must be verified.
Denny Library has a copy of the complete index of the stones which I handed in but I think it's kept 'through the back' and you have to specifically ask for it! :)
Anne
P.S. I haven't had the chance to go into Falkirk Library yet but it's on my 'to-do' list.
-
Hi Anne,
Thanks for the info on the Denny area grave yards.
How long did it take you to index Denny Cemetery, no mean feat
thank you.
Save Falkirk Library for a rainy day and keep up your amazing graveyard investigations, Billy.

Popping up again!!
Betty - if Billy hasn't already sent you a copy of the photo of the above family's stone, let me know and I'll send you a copy.
I can tell you (pretty much) exactly where it is if you want to go and visit. My photo isn't partcularly good but it would give you a indication of what you'd be looking for.
Anne.
P.S. I started my marathon task when I heard the new High School was being built next door. Not that I think any of the kids would ever imagine 'dogging-it' in the graveyard or pitting their strength against the stones >:(
-
Hi Anne,
If you could put the Anderson gravestone on this thread that would be great.
Do you also have a photo of James Anderson's grave stone which is located around the corner on the right hand side from William and Helen's stone, many thanks Billy.
-
Hi everybody,
In answer to Billy's request, below is a copy of the photograph bearing the following MI:
In memory of WILLIAM ANDERSON who died at East Borland 25th March 1903 aged 84 years
HELEN MILLER his wife died 17th May 1906 aged 87 years
JANET ANDERSON their daughter
MARGARET FLEMING died 29th December 1906 wife of
JOHN ANDERSON who died 29th March 1915 aged 71 years
The other stone you mentioned Billy ..... I'd need a wee bit more info (dates or other people) as there are sooooo many Andersons in Denny, I don't know which stone it would be. I haven't a clue of Lair Numbers so that wouldn't help.
Anne

Hi All, Haven't been on for a good few days, because had hubs home. There's always someone to throw a spanner in your works - and generally its him!! Never mind, onwards and upwards!!
Anyhoo, thanks Anne for all your info on the Denny graves! What a minefield of information you are!! I shall have a wee wander through and see who I bump into when i'm up there. :)
Thanks also to you Billy for the lairs at Denny. Should make it a tad easier to find the old rellys!! I still haven't made it back to Kilsyth yet, but hopefully soon. Anne, the way the weather has been today, you could have spent all morning in the library at Falkirk, but I'm sure there will be full days of rain to come in the near future, so best hang off 'til then and make it worth your while!!
Betty.

Mystery solved!! ;D
It was indeed Smith Anderson Snr. who was Provost of Kilsyth.
Falkirk Herald, 23rd June 1900. (In the Districts Section, Kilsyth)
"Death of an Ex-Provost
On Saturday afternoon the grave closed over the remains of Mr. Smith Anderson, who at one time was Provost of the burgh. Nearly thirty years ago Mr. Anderson came into the district, and during that time he has been more or less identified with the public work of the town. He was a member of the old Parochial Boards and Parish Council in succession, also of the Burgh School Board and Police Commission, in all of which he took his full share of the work and devoted much time in seeing to the carrying out of the various duties relegated to him. A more indefatiguable and hard-working member no body of men could seek to have better and his colleagure in the Commission recognised his labours by conferring on him the highest honour they had it in their power to bestow. His funeral was largely attended by the public men of the town."
He died on 14th June 1900 aged 74 at High Craigends, Kilesyth (a Thursday) and was buried a days later on 16th June 1900 (a Saturday).
I would imagine the local Kilsyth paper has a bit more than the Herald has. I photocopied the article and if any of you want a copy, I can scan it and send it on, so please send me your addresses by PM.
I downloaded 2 x Smith Anderson Death certs from SP, one for the above man and the other for a Smith Anderson, Farm Labourer who died 8th January 1929 aged 61 at Larbert, usual residence Shielwells Farm, Carronbridge. Son of William & Helen Anderson (nee Miller), so the same offer goes for either/both of those.

Well done Anne! Many thanks to you and Billy for you help and perseverance! It would be great to see a copy of the obit. I'll send you my e-mail address in a PM. I already have Provost Smith Anderson's death cert but would be interested to also see the other Smith's death cert who died in 1929. I don't have that one. Thanks again.
Lesley :)
