Title: 1861 census lookup please - Turner
Post by: Benn2509 on Saturday 09 August 08 17:14 BST (UK)
I'm trying to find the 1861 census for Richard Turner, The only information I have is from his marriage certificate in 1875, so I hope it helps....
In 1875 Richard is 20 years old, he was born in Leek in about 1855, his fathers name was John Turner, no age known but he was a blacksmith in 1875, the residence at time of marriage was Cheddleton.
There are two witnesses, John Turner and Mary Ellen Turner, I don't know who they are and ages etc are also not known.
I know this is very vague, and I really hope someone can help.
I look forward to any replies.
Benn.

Hi Rosie, thanks for your reply, I don't know if they are his parents and siblings, the only info I have is that from the marriage cert in 1875, although it does look promising. If this family can be found in 1861 and 1871 it might show Richard living with them.
Thanks again,
Benn.

Hi Benn
Unfortunately I don't have Ancestry access so can't look this family up on previous census though I think I can see them on the index
John Turner bn c1820 Cheddlestone or Leek with wife Mary Ann
There is also a possible for Richard bn c1853 Cheddlestone in 1871, hopefully someone can look them up for you if only to eliminate this family as Richards parents

Sorry I can't be more help to you
Rosie

Benn,

I think I may have found Richard TURNER in 1871 living in Stoke on Tent.

He is in the household of Jemima HALL, grocer,

Richard is age 16 grocer's apprentice born Cheddleton.

Class: RG10; Piece: 2876; Folio: 46; Page: 1

Will have a look in 1861.

Can't see Richard in 1861 at the moment.

Have found John the Blacksmith and family but there is no Richard with the family  :(

Hi.
I  have most of the Turners from Cheddleton, Leek and Brown Edge Area.  They were mostly Master Blacksmiths or  Wheelwrights from 1750 Until my great grandfather.  Although the records show them as being from Cheddleton they actually lived what is now called Longsdon/Ladderedge on the old road from Leek to Norton.
1855 Richard was the son of John and Sarah who was the son of Richard and Ellen who was the son of Richard and Ellen Fynney  from there you can go back on the Fynney side to the lords and ladies if the De Fiennes family and the Broughs or DE Berg to all the Kings and Queens of Europe.
If You look at www.brownedge.com  under families I have most of the Turner Family there in a family tree.
There is a likely story that the Turners came to Leek and were descended from the Normans  I know that Anthea Turner Has a family Book with all this documented as when she was on Blue Peter they did an article on it.
I have had my DNA tested and it doesn't match any one else's but is of Norse origin so maybe the Norman story is true.  Would like other Turners from North Staffs to take part in the Turner DNA project.
