how whites were related to Coopers. I have found Whites with coopers on census and on one with Leonard and Phyllis cooper (Leonard was Mattys brother) there is a George white and Mary, and i think maybe mary might be Leonard and phyllis daughter. Can you tell me how the whites/coopers are related? Thanks.
I see you have Scarrotts, loveridge and penfolds. My mums grandmother was Counceletta Scarrott daughter of Theophilus scarrott and rhoda smith. Counceletta married (or not) Walter Brinkley whose mother was Esther Loveridge. Counseys mother Rhoda married 2nd Valentine Brinkley who was an uncle of Walter, she then went on to marry Christopher Smith uncle of the evangalist Rodney Smith. I have never been able to find out much about Rhoda except for all her dalliances with men! Walter Brinkleys brother Rodney married Jane Penfold and they had Fambridge, Rodney and Priscilla all around 1897-1900 in Edmonton.
right thats your lot.thats all my queries for the kent surrey london lot.i know all those names connect to my devon crowd.just not know how!you have answered loads of questions and i think this hunt should help a number of researchers of the different families.i am just fortunate or unfortunate as the case may be to have the lot of them in my family!!!!!!this lot on this post of course relate to our devon penfolds and loveridges!!!!!and the famous windsor coopers who you did so well with at the beginning of this hunt and also the keffords!!i might aswell make use of my last couple of days so now you have it all!!!!!!i wonder what to do on my next hunt :P :P ??? ??? ;Di know over in australia....????
-
i dont know what to make of that.the only cooper/male penfold marriage i know of was albert penfold devon to minnie cooper kent.this cooper head comes from scotland and our coopers are def based round kent and surry.i will keep it for future ref just in case.its not a particularly travellers occ either master grocer?
-

WB, deb ...
Hey, Cathay, sorry I've not been of any help on this hunt, BUT I did pop into chat late (for me) tonight and there was someone called wpenfold2000 ... do you know of this person? They were in and out too quickly for me to inquire.
Also, indiapaleale has found a place nearby that is called Penfolds. deb, see her blog of 26 May and there is a pic of their sign.
Good luck!

Joseph and Henry could be brothers, at the bottom of page 3 I posted 1851 for the "Aris"/Ayres family. The Joseph and Henry on there only have a 5 year age difference, but places of birth are similar so its probably the same people I think. Also the Parker family, I wondered if it could be Mark's brother, I notice they have a son named Mark.....

??? ;Di know over in australia....????
the last two recaps are all i have left!!see what you can do.scarrott/loveridge/brinkley should be a minefield.
-
i dont even know who her dad was let alone her dads d.o.d. her surname might have been armenetta but as she was born around 1822 i got no idea really.

cathay, betty here, thanks for posting up rhoda smith. The post that says she is dau of William Smith and Sinfoy may only be supposition, nothing concrete has been found to connect her, unless anyone can tell me different. What is known about her is married 1862 Theophilus scarrott, grandson of the mentioned William Scarrott and Mary Whitehouse. Had children counceletta 1863 m walter brinkley. william 1866 hes on 1881 census stoke hammond on green with a Johnny and Kesiah Smith both from Oxfordshire. Rhoda went with Valentine Brinkley son of william brinkley and anne shaw (her daughter Counseys husbands uncle) and had Valenine 1879, Edward 1881, James 1877. James died 1907 Edmonton, but more is known of Edward, he married Priscilla Penfold (not sure of her parents) They married 1920 Chipping Barnet and had
Reuben 1926
Annie
Lena 1909 d 1982
rhoda 1922 d 2000 maarried john scott from mitcham
jane 1919 d 2001 married ned gumble
frank 1913 d 1979
edward 1907 d 1928
priscilla 1904 born edmonton.
Walter brinkley senior (brother of Valentine above) married Esther loveridge also known as Henrietta Haynes (her mother was a Caroline Haynes, her father Levi Valentine Loveridge), Walter and Esther had:-
Sidney 1865 married Leander Smith and they had Sidney 1898
Rodney married jane penfold and they had fambridge 1897 rodney 1900 and priscilla 1889

forgot to mention they also had walter brinkley who went with counceletta scarrott who had albert, keziah, oliver, gentila, william, frederick, walter, caroline, rhoda and of course my grandmother Ocean, who married Thomas Cooper grandson of Matty Cooper.
Rhodas last dalliance was with Christopher Smith uncle of the evangalist Gypsy Rodney Smith, they had no children, although Edward and James Brinkley were with them on the 1891 census as Smiths and not brinkleys.
So Rhoda has links with Scarrotts, Loveridge, Brinkley, Smiths, Penfolds, Lees, etc, these mainly were around the Edmonton area.

A lot of christenings happend at Binstead in Hampshire.
Up til now I have not heard of any of my families being in Cornwall, Devon or Somerset way. Not impossible But in Hampshire Yes.
They also were great Hop picking and fruit picking enthusiasts, hence my photo. LOL. So they were often in Kent and Sussex.
The further I have gone back in time family members were born all over the place as they were ont he road more.
But at the end of the 19th century (late 1800's) they settled down. My lot ended up in Croydon, Wilford, Forster and St Saviours Road, commonly known as Bangole until the war (1939 to 1945.)
A lot of the Cooper family ended up there as well.
If you go through the census pages from 1871 to 1901 for the roads mentioned you will find that the same families lived there, be it they moved from house to house as their families multiplied. You will find Mills, Coopers, Loveridge, Lock , Smith
Penfold and many many more well known gypsy based family names. The other area involved was Fountain Road , Half acre cottages in Mitcham.
I have taken note your Coopers and Mills names and give me afew days and I will see what I can come up with.
-
yes i am off to bed aswell.see you when you get back.hullo or rather GOOD MORNING eveyone still hunting.just one last recap for you all as we have covered everything else/cathayb

My rhoda smith was born aout 1844-1849 ish.... daughter of william smith. On her marriage cert to theophilus scarrott a james and caroline smith were her witnesses.
But any references to rhoda smiths who are travellers are helpful, thanks
-
Rhoda is on 1901 census back as rhoda smith with sons edward and james at little ilford essex, lots of smiths, webbs, her daughter counsey brinkley down as counsey loveridge, my nan ocean is there, this is where she meets my grandfather tom cooper and marries him at ilford 6 weeks later in May 1901. Toms mother patience smith daughter in law of matty cooper is there also with a couple of her sons but not my grandad. In 1891 rhoda is with christoper smith i think at walpole road, along with a lot of christophers smith family, 1881 shes with valentine brinkley as rhoda brinkley in caravan cuffley, herts. Sorry about the rg numbers but am just doing this off the top of my head at moment, as am busy in garden and need to get back there.
thanks for all your help folks xx

we willkeep slogging at it.i have just put my dinner in but whiles its cooking i will keep looking.

Looking at message 162 Mariah Smith saying born Broughton Northants, well I have the PR's for Broughton Oxfordshire and on 28/6/1808 there is a baptism of Maria Smith daughter of Henry and Sarah of Chesterton Oxfordshire, gypsies. Do you think that could be her?
-
i am beginning to think that rhoda was related to the brinkleys prior to hitching up with valentine brinkley. There is a link to smiths and brinkleys.... One of my brinkleys, jonathan brinkley born 1808 marries Aquila Smith dau of James and Sarah, and they also have a William Smith born 1824, which would be the right age for rhodas father. Brings her into the brinkley family prior to valentine if thats the case. Cant find out much about william other than born north mimms hertfordshire in 1824 parents james smith and sarah.
Someone is saying william smith and sinfoy smith are her parents, but there is no proof just speculation. I need to find rhoda sons edward smith who married priscialla penfold, one of their descendants as they might know. I was in touch with a rose westrop years ago and she was going to put me in touch with them, but we lost touch before she could do it.

that sounds good, a henry smith who could be a descendent of them was picked up with rhoda in early 1900s putting their caravans on land in edmonton they shouldnt. This mariah smith could definitely be connected with my rhoda, as her 1st theophilus didnt have any connections to the baldoms whom he was with on the 1871 census.
thanks x

Rhodas first husband theophilus scarrott came from Ramsden Oxfordshire, Rhodas son william is with a johnny and kesiah smith both born oxfordshire in 1881 census at stoke hammond on the green bucks. These smiths must have something to do with her, just cant find her before her marriage to theophilus in 1862 staines middx. thanks for all your help x

the only link i have to rhoda with smith is 1891 census in walthamstow
james smith 50 born bucks (think this may be rhodas brother who signs her marriage to theophilus scarrott)
fanny 48
william son 24 hillington
john lee 4 nephew dont know who he is but on next census 1901 james and fanny are with the brinkleys and job brinkley married lavinia lee.
the next census year they have aged much more and are with the brinkleys and penfolds
1901 Edmonton
James smith 70 Hillingdon
fanny 69 west wycombe
james brinkley 57
ann56
joseph shaw 31 who is actually job brinkley
lavinia wife 28 shes lavina lee who married job brinkley
leander9
joseph 7
rodney 5 months
Esther Shaw 65 beds (actually esther brinkley nee loveridge aka haynes whose mother in law was the shaw!)
lemmie 17
louisa15
Jane Penfold aunt 39 islington shes the wife of rodney brinkley son of esther above
priscilla dau 12 think shes the priscilla penfold who marries rhodas son edward in 1926, although they have several children before they are married starting in 1905 when shes 15
rodney son 1 edmonton
I think jane went with Richard Penfold first and had priscilla, james and robert, he either died and went off and she then went with rodney brinkley and they had rodney in edmonton in 1900 - his bapt has him them all down as penfolds, rodney penfold, jane penfold and son rodney.
You can see why i have trouble with this lot, they never keep the same name twice, their ages are always different, they say they are born in different places (rhoda on 3 census has 3 different birthplaces in 3 different counties)
James and Fanny camp at folly lane meadows in walthamstow at different times and rhoda does too, she dies there in 1912.

Bloxham baptisms
Elias son of Moses and Lucretia Smith gypseys 23/2/1817

Now Tracy Ann, Theresa Ann and Crazy Ann have got to be the same person, so baptisms for 3 children of that family so far.
Mollington baptism
Arnold son of Moses and Lurcherette ( Lucretia?) Smith basket maker of Sulgrave Northants 15/4/1821
Silence daughter of Silvina and Margaret Smith gypsies 25/12/1825
Wroxton baptism

Levi is son of Henry Loveridge and Ann Halford.

Loveridge Levi 6356 groom W two 5' 5 3/4" light brown blue full fresh stout 6356 Widower; Star left wrist, mole left side
Loveridge Levi 6356 6y 37 Bradford .. .. 1860 Receiving stolen goods Think this is my Levi with his two children Ann and Joseph Henry as cant find them anywhere in England.
Would like to find out who Henry loveridge parents are. Henry and Ann married 1800 Olney Bucks - other loveridge marry there.
Ann Halfords parents may be James Halford and Martha loveridge
So if anyone can find Henry Loveridge i would be most pleased. Thanks for all your help everyone.

Cathay if you think Henry and Ann could have married in Oxfordshire then there is an index of Oxfordshire marriages, I don't have it but if you put a thread on the Oxfordshire lookup requests board then some people who post on there do have it and they will look for you. I can't find their marriage on 2 of my CD's but I will check the other 2 later.

not sure if this will work ... William penfold s/o Thomas Penfold and Sophia Orchard with wife Bessie Palmer
Hi Debs ( cousin) just found this thread trying to read it through )
Just wondering do you know much about Bessie Palmer ?
like parents when she was born etc
I know of Palmer family in USA I have info on them
Noah Palmer married Britannia Cooper daughter of Nelson Cooper
Noah had brother Charles he wed Georgina Lee daughter of Arthur & Yuni Lee
Charles Palmer's youngest child was Elizabeth ? Is this Bessie ?
I also have a Samford Palmer (I think was Noah son but called Samson not confirmed) who married Sophie Buckland ( daughter of Plato Buckland) but before she married him she was married to a Penfold
2 of Plato daughters married Penfolds
Sophy married James Penfold 1887 Plymouth
Jentie married William Penfold 1887 Plymouth
I don;t know what happened to James Penfold or if these are brothers or who their parents are ?
but Sophie was in USA 1900 New York with her parents married to Samford but under name of Parmer
Jentie was under name of Penful ( thinks its all been mispelt myself)
If you can tell me anything about Bessie Palmer might be same family
Plato was under name of Bucklin

He was my gt gt gt grandfather on mums side. I have aunt and uncle on dads side who i think live in WA (they travel around still) and i will have to ask if they could visit the grave. Thanks again, romany roser xx

-
hello - I am new too
My grandfather was a James Charles Penfold and he married Ellen margaret Tregear.
my mother Nellie Penfold was born in 1914
I have found a family of Penfolds living at Gurlings Yard in the 1901 census
the head of the family was also a James Penfold (dob abt 1861)
he was married to Mary ann Penfold and they had 6 children including James Penfold (dob abt 1887) - I believe this James penfold could be my grandfather
I was always told that the family came from 'gypsies' and i note some references to the travelling devon penfolds.
Any information would be very useful
Many thanks
