Hi. My illegitimate great grandfather, John (Jack) Morris (groom, brewer's traveller, furniture remover) was born in Bromlow, 8.1.1878 to Eliza Morris, domestic servant. There are two likely Eliza Morrises - one born in Lydham 1858 to Charles (a farmer) and Eliza, the other born 1860 in Westbury to James (lead miner) and Jane. Does anyone know anything of either of these Elizas, please?
Thanks, F.

Hi Frangible,
Welcome to Rootschat!! :)
I see in the 1881 census he was aged 3, a 'nurse child' living in Chirbury with William & Lucy Lewis, his place of birth given as Worthen
This is only about 4 miles from Westbury, 9 miles from Lydham, if that helps

Thanks, Barbara - yes, I feel certain he was adopted by William and Lucy (he gave William Lewis Morris as his father's name on his marriage cert). Unfortunately for the neatness of that conclusion, William came from Bishop's Castle, so a connection to Lydham. All these families seem to have links to the various villages SW of Shrewsbury. One other thing - a Martha Morris registered John Morris's birth, and both of the Elizas I've mentioned have a sister called Martha.

Thought it might be too neat! How annoying for there to be two sister Marthas. Have you seen his baptism record, wondering if any further details on that?
-
I haven't seen the baptism record, no. I must get up to Shrewsbury again and have a good look. The trouble is you have to ration the time you can give to each ancestor, don't you?! So much to learn and so little time in records offices.
There is another Martha Morris, by the way, who is a possible for the witness/registering of the birth... born 1808 in Worthen and living in Bromlow in 1881, married to John Morris who was born in Chirbury. With all of it I get the feeling that unless someone else actually knows what happened it will all remain a mystery.
Update: the 1911 census shed some light on all of this. Found another Eliza Morris, who seems to be the right one, especially as she was born to John and Martha Morris living in Bromlow. Mystery solved except for the father .....

Hi
I hear you are interested in the groves from Isle of Wight. My ancestors came from freshwater and a place called eastern.

Guess this should be in the Hampshire section.... anyway, I have bare dates for Butchers and Groves (the latter going back to Edmund in 1600) but would love to have information to flesh out the bare bones. I suspect Anthony Groves (1711-1793) of being a miller, which would be nice, but can't prove anything!

Hi. I'm descended from Anthony and his first wife, Mary Griffen, through Mary Bucher, nee Groves.
William Groves(1679) was the sone of Stephen Grove (1645-1696 and Grace Symons(1653-1687). Stephen's parents were Thomas Groves (1620) and Elenor, and that Thomas was born to Edmund Grove (c1600) and Mary.
That's all I know. All, I think, from the Isle of Wight Record Office.

Hi Frangible,
I am sorry to jump into your post with a different topic but I am new on this site and have not worked it all out yet! I see that you are reasearching Brownings in/around Deal in Kent. I am as well, so I was wondering if you could send me a pm (I don't seem to be able to) to see if we are looking at some of the same people. Many thanks, Chris
